Horrible loss with all of the advantages those women have. I don't want to hear any more talk about how they should make as much as the men anymore either.

Quarter final exit is completely unacceptable.

I know little about soccer and less about women's soccer, but it was plainly evident to me that this year's Olympic squad did not have the look of previous iterations. They were, as a group, slower and plodding. They already had a number of close calls in the group phase. It was just a matter of time. I was not shocked.

How badly did the Swedish coach want to stick it to Lloyd and the Americans?

BTW, include me in the large # of sports fans (maybe not soccer purists) who think that deciding games by PKs is the worst thing (among many) about soccer [the PK for bullshit calls in the box is right up there]. PKs as the decider in group play may be OK as a conservation measure, but once you get to the knockout rounds, play on. Deciding the over-all champ by PK is an absolute disgrace.

+1

Play on.

Very appropriate that Alex Morgan is the face/body of USWS- choker. I'd sell that stock.

After winning the World Cup maybe the adrenaline just isn't there for the Olympics. Serena Wiiliams and Njocavik also had early exits , who know? '

Reminds me of the 2002 Brazil Men's World Cup winners -- dominating in their heyday , but by the time 2006 rolled around, the core was simply past its prime.

PKs are the incentive for better teams to take more chances offensively -- you don't want to leave it up to what essentially amounts to a coin flip.

WC was a year ago my friend.

IMHO:

- Hope Solo never wanted to be there and should have stayed home. She just looked "blah" the entire game today while the Swedish keeper was going nuts during the pk's
- losses and additions to a team that had such great chemistry for so long
- coaching. Honestly thought there were some substitutions at the wrong times but what do I know

Alex Morgan is way overhyped
And why is that, the men didn't even qualify.

I don't see them crying about their compensation. Those women should have concentrated more on playing than what they feel they weren't making.

Worst women's soccer team we have had in a tournament.

Agree about Morgan. She was "hyped" by SI - over Carli - before the WC because she's photogenic, et al, but she is far inferior talent-wise, to Carli, as well as a few of the girls coming up I believe.

Okay...sorry but this is funny....2 gay men on the Dutch Equestrian team are partners in real life. All good. One of them, whose first name just happens to be Peter, rides a horse aptly named...."Johnson." Yup. Gotta love it!

One thing I like about Hope Solo is her high degree of sportsmanship. Read what she had to say about the Swedes after losing today's game:

Sounds like every dude in synchro diving. Imagine the drama going on in that whatever it is.

I completely agree. With all the hype she gets you think she would score more or make great goal scoring passes. I don't watch much soccer but when the USA plays I always watch. I always tell my wife watch out for the girl Morgan she's supposed to be good(based off of what others who know more than me say), but then goes on to do nothing.

Coach K is not a good coach. He's been out coached the last 2 games. I'm glad he's done after the Olympics.

She got hyped up a lot based on the 2011 World Cup, and she was only a substitute. That should have been a red flag right there. Then she didn't have a great 2015 World Cup (although to be fair she was injured). It's completely accurate the Carli Lloyd is by far a superior player, but only gets maybe half the media coverage, and we all know way. I noticed before the World Cup last year, they were going to try to do the same thing with Christen Press (for the same reason), but she didn't play enough.

And why is that, the men didn't even qualify.

I don't agree with the sentiment, but the women's Olympic team is the senior squad. The men's team is only the U-23.

Is this going to be a "Bad Dream" team or a bad "Dream Team" ? Looks like they're ready to be had.
Some of the roster decisions are puzzling. When you put a roster together it's not NBA/college style. DeMarcus Cousins is built for the NBA. He can't guard any of the big men from other countries outside of paint. They move well away from the basket to draw him out and go around.. Why in the hell Klay Thompson can't get any real time on the court? You need shooters the stretch the floor. Plus he's willing to play defense. I don't like the the roster full of the same players. It's a bunch of 3s who don't shoot well enough from 3 to respect them and they can't drive on the people either. The team could use another PG and another big man who can move and defend opponents outside of the paint. Also, too many individual plays. They don't run any set plays for easy baskets. Coach K wins because he has better talent, but the minute someone is close enough in talent Coach K is below average with the Xs and Os.

Agreed Hope Solo is classless, and crazy as well.

Michael Phelps alert ! Phelps swims his 100 M Butterfly Final at 9:12 PM tonight , est.
I've had enough of Phelps and his pseudoscience cupping. At least it doesn't hurt other people like not getting vaccinated or drink driving does. But he's a moron.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that most of the guys on the Under-23 team make more in a year than most of the gals on the "senior" ladies team.

.
ESPN chose the perfect pair to represent USA Women's Soccer.[eyeroll] Morgan and Christen Press who both missed their penalty kicks..

Wow...what a night...DiRado's "move" to out-touch...Lidecky crushing her own record...the triple tie for 2nd...then a guy (Anthony Ervin) winning a race, at 35, that he won 16 years earlier in Sydney in what is arguably the hardest race to win, and easiest race to lose, at that.

GREAT tv viewing tonight!

Press took a couple of awful shots too, during OT(or at the end of regulation, can't remember...) IMHO.

Wasn't there a tie for a silver medal in a race the other day too? Maybe going forward they should use clocks that have another decimal place to greatly reduce the chance of more ties.

There was a tie for the Gold with US Simone Manuel and a Canadian. I think your right with going to another decimal place.

Can't be done because of the tolerences of concrete swimming pools. Excellent article about this on Deadspin http://regressing.deadspin.com/this-is-why-there-are-so-many-ties-in-swimming-1785234795
From the article:
As it turns out, FINA used to. In 1972, Sweden’s Gunnar Larsson beat American Tim McKee in the 400m individual medley by 0.002 seconds. That finish led the governing body to eliminate timing by a significant digit. But why?

In a 50 meter Olympic pool, at the current world record 50m pace, a thousandth-of-a-second constitutes 2.39 millimeters of travel. FINA pool dimension regulations allow a tolerance of 3 centimeters in each lane, more than ten times that amount. Could you time swimmers to a thousandth-of-a-second? Sure, but you couldn’t guarantee the winning swimmer didn’t have a thousandth-of-a-second-shorter course to swim. (Attempting to construct a concrete pool to any tighter a tolerance is nearly impossible; the effective length of a pool can change depending on the ambient temperature, the water temperature, and even whether or not there are people in the pool itself.)

Horrible refereeing in the Brazil-Australia women's soccer match, just now, during PKs. Brazil won in the 8th round, as the Brazilian keeper made a nice save (her 2nd of 8) - however, on almost every PK she moved forward way off her line before the shot, which is not supposed to be allowed (would be a rekick). Brazil was the better side, but still...
