Only Rutgers

Purdue doesnt have any portal players...Painter recruits 2 and 3 stars and is an amazing coach. He has a system and sticks to it. They lost their supposed starting center to a broken leg to start the year. He does not guarantee playing time as a freshmen and told a big time recruit this year that and he went elsewhere
This simply is not true. Their roster is full of 4 stars. No 2 stars.

Heide was a 3 but point taken, I was going off of my conversation with a Purdue fan sitting next to me saying Painter isnt getting top recruits....Loyer was rated like 85th. Point is that compared to other top programs they are not relying on the big names....and even a few you listed there have been disappointments such as Morten and Furst . Edey was ranked 255th in the country

painter has won multiple tourneys and held the #1 ranking and reached the championship game last year, please do not compare him to Pikiell
Not what I was doing at all. Just asking a question. Didn’t Painter start somewhere? You brought up a specific culture that we always criticized Pike for. He went offense and now we’re all pissed.

what offense

what he did was hand the program over to two players renting a space for the season to showcase their skills for the nba

what offense
He whiffed on it, but that’s sort of the point. He recruited guys that were supposed to be shooters, their games didn’t pan out at this level and you’re stuck with nothing since they don’t defend well. Everyone wanted this but realistically, did we think a bunch of shooters were going to commit to defending to our past standards? We effed up and only GRF was right about this crap.

In his earlier years that was true but he's recruiting at a different level now

Heidi was a 4 star

It's harder but you just need to recruit players that fit your system and culture every year in the portal

Pike went away from the Rutgers culture and now we have no team identity or team strength

What is this team's identity?

What does this team do well?
I can name a few things they do well…..they are able to be affected by the flu for 3 games, one is able to slip on the floor several times on a highly consistent basis game in game out, they can laugh and joke and have a good time regardless of the score, a team captain manages to provide leadership while playing absolutely no minutes on the floor, and we have a coach who claps real hard and throws his hands up over his shoulders to the crowd with great ferociousness. That’s all I got.

not according to AI

Yes, Purdue recruited three-star players in the 2022 men's basketball class. The players were:

  • Braden Smith
A 6' point guard from Westfield High School in Indiana, Smith was named Indiana Mr. Basketball in 2022.

  • Camden Heide
A 6'5" small forward from Wasatch Academy in Utah, Heide was the third-ranked player in Minnesota.

  • Fletcher Loyer
A guard who was ranked in the top 100 in the nation by recruiting services.

  • William Berg
    A 7'1" center from Sweden

Lol ok? He was a rivals 4 star. I posted the actual link. He was probably a 3 star on 247 or espn

And doesn't run an offense that takes advantage of their abilities.
Here’s where I disagree. With the players we recruit, this all he can run. ISO. Same with Baker, same last year with JWill, Simpson and Davis.

We don’t have players who are capable of what you saw Purdue run.

What skill does Ogbole have ? Davis ? Derkack? Even Hayes ? He’s shot poorly of late too. It’s just a shit roster of portal bums, Ogbole and Davis.

Rutgers usually wins the opening tap but quickly results in a turnover with a pass to the center near the basket.
And then continued to turn it over nine more times in the next ten minutes or so.

He is a very good coach and unlike Pike is very good at adjusting his style to the players he has, but he also won the lottery with Edey.

That’s BS. They have legs and arms. They can move, quickly .stay in motion and quickly psss. They certainly can do more than iso and have done it at rare times this year.

I don’t think you can build a culture program anymore in this era

Yes - he could. We needed to actually recruit a center. Cliff should’ve been prioritized but even after that first fail. We didn’t need a star. Even a position appropriate Austin Williams type would’ve helped a lot. Experience is important at center. Thats first of all. Other than that - D and hussle should’ve been the focus because those are the types of guys Pike does best with and we were surrounding frosh with these kids. Last year wasn’t an exception. The D executed well and what we recruited would’ve probably fit a lot better with Paul at PG and Cam there to make shots. Thats why last year was a disaster.

There is no reason for recruiting D in the portal to be a challenge. It should be cheaper and easier to manage egos with that strategy overall. Things fell apart when Pike stopped the Jaden Jones approach to defensive no show and shifted to appease his GG offensive prize. Not that it mattered at that point because we didn’t have enough offense to win.

We should be able to recruit a few very good established players every year. When you start with nothing, playing time is a big appeal. The surrounding cast needs to be guys who want to be glue guys and defensive stoppers. Not mid major volume scorers looking to prove they can make the step up. What a disaster.

Wrong. Ogbole has legs and arms. Do you think he could become a good three point shooter ? Or Davis at the other end of the height scale ? Players and systems aren’t interchangeable. Players bring different talents. Princeton players can’t play our style (as Martini proves) and our guys can’t play Princeton’s style.

We don’t have guys who are capable of playing in Purdue’s style, and Purdue does not have guys who would thrive in a freestyle, ISO offense.

I won’t name the player, but when I was in college here there was a bball varsity starter (at guard) who wasn’t one of the better players in pickup games because he needed more structured offense to score than those games had.
