Open your heart!

I lift 5 days a week and started doing yoga the other two days. The yoga is the hardest workout I do and I feel terrific afterwards. Highly recommend.

I hear that your father was a regular yogi. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Anyone here doing Yoga?
I just completed my 2nd class of many I hope...to say it's not just stretching is a huge understatement. Holy shite

I have been doing it for 5 or 6 years now. Best thing ever. Combine it with running and you are set. What type of yoga? I alternate between power and vinyasa flow. Haven't touched a weight in years but I'm certain my body weight to strength ratio is stronger than ever.

I've found that The simplest way to feel better is to eat natural foods, in nature's packaging. NJ native Dr, Joel Fuhrman has changed my life, and I've only followed his strict teachings about 70% of the time. I've lost 70 lbs since June.

I decided to try yoga this winter now that I cant bike etc. Last year I learned to do "proper" deadlifts and adjust my posture. Oddly, people cant do splits and other some things because they don't have (or lost rather) the neurological capacity and not necessarily because they "don't bend that way". That's how I fixed posture (developed neurological capacity in back). If you keep at it you'll bend baring some existing injury or disease.

I'm a beginner Cali, I'm starting with basic.
I had no idea Yoga was all about your core and using your own body as resistance, but I relate it to any sport you play at a high level, you complete your movements with little or no excess body movement…the greatest athletes in the world slowed down on film are completely under control with no flailing.

I follow his diet as well, have fish several times a month, drink water and green tea all day...beans, greens, fruits, vegetables...and use Life Extension suppliments

There is a poster on this board who lost 205lbs over 13 months (starting at 399 lbs) doing DDP yoga and diet. I know he used to post about it here all the time. 20 months later he has still kept all the weight off.

Did a few months of it 2 winters ago when recovering from injuries. Agreed that, especially as a beginner, it is difficult! I did later find myself with minor stumbles and realizing that before yoga that I would have fallen flat on my back/face. It is amazing how my strength, flexibility and balance improved in a relatively short time.

You've lost 70 lbs in 6 months? Unless you were 350 lbs, I can't see how that rapid weight loss is healthy.
I was 305, I've done things in a healthy manner. My only issue was a bad habit of not taking in many calories In the first half hour after waking up which led to lightheadedness and I've taken care of that.

Gotcha. There are different types of yoga, some of which have different levels within that discipline. Totally agree with your take on great athletes. Watch Kelly Slater surf. Never a limb out of place.

Funny story after playing football in college I needed something to keep in shape and get that competitive high, so I decided to train for TinMan's. Would run 7 miles, lift, go for 30 mil. bike rides, swim laps for a mile, kayak for 4 hrs. Was in the best shape of my life, right. Wrong, girl I met said you should try yoga. OK I figured this is girly stuff no problem. Go to class with her, it's some type of power yoga. I was sore in places I didn't even know had muscles for a week. Needless to say I never went back to a yoga class again in my life after that experience.:)

Every now and then I see the weightlifting muscle head type guys come into class with an attitude. After chuckling internally at their struggle, they invariably leave with much less of one.

Definitely a benefit of yoga. Hot chicks bending around you everywhere.

Yoga is a godsend...once I got past the possible damage I may possibly do to the family crown jewels.

They're opening up a place in Newark next Fall by the museum-within walking distance from me in Harrison.Maybe next winter,I'll join.

Are you eating foods in their natural wrapper or are you eating food in your natural wrapper?

I've taught yoga for about eight years, along with advanced Pilates, though have taken a break for the past couple of years. I'm going to be getting back into teaching soon, and had a teacher who knew how to restore balance to the entire human being, not just the physical part. Learning to get quiet, learning to not be competitive against others in the class, learning to just keep your eyes closed, breathe, and shot everything else out, are some of the things that a good teacher can give to his/her students. Of all the weightlifting and sports I've done in my time, I have never been in as good shape as when I taught (and took) Pilates and yoga.

I'm ADD and OCD, I'm hoping the whole yoga thing helps.
It will with the right teacher. And you have to be willing to take a risk and shut external things out during the class--after all, it's YOUR time in the class, and everyone outside the class, including kids, can take care of themselves. People (like you) who have been taught to be high achievers and who have accomplished a lot tend to try to control things, and letting go of that control is a big challenge. If you accept that it doesn't matter as much as you think to control things in your world, the diagnosis of ADD and OCD and whatever else any of us may have been assigned can melt away.

When your instructor encourages you to "bring your attention to heart center," envision what the oxygen within your body is doing. That's a starting point.

Most men desire control. Yogis control desire. Bend your mind around that one for a minute. ..

I used to think a hot yoga class was a class for ladies to express sexuality lol. I didnt know it was literally yoga in like 100 degrees! I would actually like to try this because my flexibility is zero without some heat. This thread has me thinking i will look into it
