OT: Dry January

I have read among GenZ and maybe millennials to a degree alcohol isn’t so popular and non alcoholic drinks are a growing thing in that demographic.
This is accurate. Millenials and Gen Z are far more attracted to Cannabis and going full sober than previous generations.

That's not a good thing for society. Trading something bad for something also bad. Research on weed isn't looking too good either.
Ridiculous statement.

One is responsible for over 500 deaths PER DAY in the United States and the other has ZERO REPORTED DEATHS EVER. Absolutely absurd argument. This doesn't even get into the medical benefits of CBD/Terpenes for healthcare.

Shut up B*tch

I been trying to cut out any drinking the last couple of years. I’m down to maybe 2-4 drinks a month. There has been a recent flood of articles that mention any type of drinking is bad causing cancer especially as you get older. I started to substitute some drinking with pot.
lol that sounds smart

Not harsh at all, comparing something that causes 500+ deaths PER DAY in this country alone to something that has ZERO deaths on record and PROVEN medical benefits is absurd.

The fact that we have old farts who still are worried about ‘reafer madness’ is absurd these days, and yea, I’ll tell them ‘shut up b*tch’ In my best Dwayne Johnson voice while taking a puff of my ganj.

I’m also someone who gave up drinking years ago and knows first how how much alcohol can destroy one’s life. Cannabis is an entirely different conversation.

It's been around since 2012 by a woman in England who was training for a half marathon. By the next January it grew to 4000 of registered people and has grown dramatically since worldwide.
Funny that anyone hasn't heard of it especially since the pandemic.
I started doing it during the 2007-2008 football season. RU had their bowl after Jan 1st that year. I called it Bowl-to-Bowl. Rutgers Bowl to the Super Bowl. I’ve done it every year since.

At first, it wasn’t even a healthy thing. During FB season, I would hit it pretty hard. For me, it was more like - am I still in control? Lol. Plus, I eat a lot of crap between TDay and Xmas. So, just for fun, early on I also added no sweets/desserts. First few weeks back then were ROUGH, haha. Now, I don’t drink as much, but I still eat way too much junk before NYD. So, I really look forward to it.

Between holidays with family, my neighbor that likes to come over for some beers, sporting events, and work outings. it’s hard to completely give up drinking.

I’d say an average I have a couple of drinks per week, but there could be three weeks when I don’t have anything and then one week or I drink three or four times with probably a combined 20 to 30 beers due to the aforementioned commitments

Never got into the whole drink wine with dinner phenomenon or have a beer or two after work, just wasn’t my thing and going to bars typically isn’t my jam either

Hopefully, in the next few years when we move down south, it will just be relegated to sporting events (and less frequent, as Naples is exactly a sports Mecca) and occasional work outings (the guys up here in my industry really like to drink, whereas the rumor has the guys down south aren’t too keen on it)

Now THAT’S more in line with what a lot of people SHOULD do. Instead of giving up booze for a month ‘just because’ more it’s shedding the inevitable 10 lbs that I gain every year between thanksgiving and Christmas that come January I need to diet🤣

Mine has a purpose. By March it's time to get out and do hills and miles to start the cycling season. The first month sets up your entire season. Feel better and having lost weight is a great start to a great year.
Have a goal after your dry month.

Yup yup, I’ve started to implement stairs and more hill climbing as well. It’s so good for your heart

I gave up drinking in 2016 after my alcoholic uncle died of heart failure at 53 and was the 4th heavy drinker in my family to die under 60 years old. I sometimes miss the occasional brew but between that and becoming a father that year I just kinda never looked back on the booze.

Only one slight problem with that: the world famous Oktoberfest suit no longer fits due to weight loss. 😎

There’s someone missing on the board whom loved to partake in big quantities of alcohol daily and was very proud of this. Have you noticed that?
I don’t want to name names lol
Hope all is okay. 😳

You are 100% correct on that. Tried it on in 2023 and even I was shocked. Falling off. I about 6-8 pounds away from goal of 180. Then I'll have it altered this summer.

You could also go for the David Byrne Stop Making Sense look and save money on the alterations. 😂

The commercial celebrating the remaster of Stop Making Sense with going to the cleaners to pick up that coat was hilarious.

I drink at a good consistent clip...in sales and we have a bar in our building. I am doing dry Jan (minus a client Bruins game last week); I started Dec 26. This is the second time in my life and I feel great. Thinking clearer and I feel lighter.

Why am I doing a this a second time? From the warnings about sugar and I know booze is bad; I am getting terrified of prostate cancer.

Alcohol is a poison. It wasn't difficult to realize bringing smoke into your lungs was bad.

Will I go back in Feb? Yes. But I cut my drinking way back in 2018. This Dry Jan is just another step to get the amount of booze down another level.

I’m about 20 years we will see the same studies showing you are wrong.

Consider taking up hiking. Good for you in so many ways. Alone or with a group.

Zero deaths ? You must be high. Lol also have you seen the stoners on the road ? You spot them all over now running red lights , stopping when they are not supposed to , swerving and doing 20 miles per hour in the fast line on and on. Both alcohol and drugs are bad .

Tripping Cheech And Chong GIF

My father did that for one year. My mom said he could never do it again. He was miserable! 🤣

As many have said alcohol is related to many health issues. My father passed from Alzheimer's and alcohol is double edge sword. Alcohol can damage brain cells and sleep apnea is also linked alcohol use.
If you have sleep apnea. Don't laugh it off as being that person that neighbors can hear you snore. Go see a doctor.
Hey bus you reminded me with the story of your dad. One year I did not give up alcohol. I gave up Tabasco instead. It was the most miserable Lent ever. Yes I like my beverages, but except for tailgating and a few other circumstances I usually do not have alcohol until the evening. Tabasco??? Everyday all day does. Not matter the meal. I love the heat And flavor of Tabasco if anyone likes Tabasco try a drop or three on vanilla ice cream.

Is that so? Despite the fact that we have thousands of years of history and use to look at and never once has cannabis been the cause of death compared to 500 deaths daily in the United States alone from alcohol, but now all the sudden things are gonna change in the next 20 years and people are gonna start dropping dead from weed?

K

I play a lot of disc golf which in many ways is just hiking with an object. I’m the type that hates running or hiking just for the sake of it but when you add a game/goal to it keeps my attention. Play both with groups and alone if I have time, at least once a week but normally 2-3 rounds per week. That and my 7 year old has taken a liking to it so it’s something we can do together

Zero deaths caused by cannabis yes, EVER.

When did you make the leap that driving while inebriated was legal? It’s not! Your argument is that one must break the law and start driving while intoxicated in order to cause a death by automobile…. That’s not caused by cannabis. That’s caused by stupidity and anyone dumb enough to drive while intoxicated. Interesting you bring that up though as drunk driving deaths happen at a FAR greater rates and is not factored into the 500 deaths per day in the United States caused by alcohol. No thats 500+ deaths per day based on CONSUMPTION. Find my a single death cause by consumption of cannabis alone. You can’t.

Heavy Alcohol use over time destroys one’s kidneys, liver, brain and heart… that doesn’t occur with cannabis. Heck the one potential negative we have seen with COPD/Breathing issues is caused by the smoke itself when consuming cannabis and now you can just pop a gummy and avoid that entirely.

Bro, respectfully, you have no idea what you are talking about. It’s all good though, pots not going away and something about watching weird squares try to justify ‘Reefer madness’ is just amusing to me these days

Looks like uncontrollable anger is also a symptom of being a pothead. LOL!
Who’se not in control?

Looks like being a smart*ss is a symptom of not being a square!

It’s all good buddy, you do you with your tucked in pink button up khaki’s white new balance self. I’m good over here🤣

My kids are nowhere near even thinking about drinking(hope not at least) but heard from several other parents that alcohol is not seen as “cool” these days
In all honesty, the cocktails of today, by and large, are weak as hell.

We need to get back to our roots on the cocktail side. Champagne cocktails; manhattans; rob roys; anything served in a martini glass. I think these spirit mixes in a can are just... destroying the value proposition... because they are eroding the allure and sophistication of a well-mixed drink.

When I think of a cocktail, I think of James Bond. Not of a can. No self respecting Bond would drink a long island iced tea...nevermind an LIT out of a can.

Rant over.

You shouldn't be saying this because...it's just not true.

There's ample science that has connected heavy cannabis use to psychotic disorders (e.g. schizophrenia). This is well established now and the early findings are setting the stage for further confirmatory research. Schizophrenics have a 2.5x rate of death relative to a general population.
