My girlfriend and I visited the Zimmeli Art Museum this afternoon. It was really great. The museum has an outstanding collection of art by Soviet dissidents. The works really give a sense of how oppressive it was to live in the former Soviet Union. There is also currently a special exhibition on "hyperrealism" -- a style of art done by dissidents to satirize the Soviet regime. Even if you're not especially interested in art, a half hour there might prove very enjoyable. And, at least right now, the museum is free. It's one of the best college art museums around.

I used to do a lot of work with the Zimmerli when I was at RU. It is an excellent university museum. Some neat stuff in the permanent collection as well. Right there on the main quad.

It's a wonderful "small" gallery. We go there every few years and always enjoy it. Not many people know this, but Roy Lichtenstein famous for being a big part of the "Pop Art" movement (his "Reverie" inspired the Melody Bar, in part), used to teach art at RU (Douglass at the time) before becoming celebrated as an artist - a few of his works are there, too, along with the Soviet era art, which is really thought provoking work.

Some excellent George Segal sculptures, as well, including a new one outside near the entrance.

I am by no means an art student, but I really love to see works of art after I see a documentary, movie or read about it.

After watching Woman of Gold, where a woman who fleed the Nazis in 1938 Austria found out in 1998 that a famous Klimt painting of her aunt that was stolen by the nazis when the family fled was hanging in a gallery in Austria, and her quest for restitution to get it back.

Without giving away the movie, I can't wait to go see that painting.

Of course, it's too bad that we don't have that painting at the Zimmerli, however it's not too far from RU. It's at the Neue Gallery on 85th (?) and 5th in NYC. Worth a detour!

You're certainly right. The Neue Gallery (founded with Estee Lauder money) is well worth seeing.
