OT: Anyone’s kid going through the college admissions process this spring

We’ll be doing the middle school admissions application process next year. Will follow this thread closely to see how it goes.
We are past the stress part. My daughter got into RU and a few other schools. The process wasn’t that bad. She didn’t decide yet, but RU was her first choice and she got in. She just needs to make it official.
This reminds me of Dylan Harper’s silent commitment :) Congrats to your daughter. I heard that Rutgers admission is highly competitive this year. Not sure if you heard the same thing.
Thank you. Yes. Now that they are on the common app they have received a lot more applications vs not being on common app.
RU must be doing some outreach. I know a girl out here from a prestigious prep school with a 1450 SAT and she’s going to Rutgers. I’ve never heard of that. Not from out here.
Remember if you don't get into your first choice school you can always apply again after one year at your second choice. When dealing with transfer students admissions offices are more focused on how you did in your one year of college and not so much high school GPA or SAT scores.
I have a senior this year but her process was streamlined. She wants to go into nursing and wants to attend a school near a good winter guard program. (That's a competitive indoor art/sport, for those who've never heard of it.) I live outside Atlanta so she was looking at schools in the Atlanta metro area. Then she applied to Alabama, who has a good nursing school, a great guard program, and throws a lot of $$ at good out of state students. They also have rolling admissions. She loved her campus visit and so that was settled pretty quickly for us. At least she should be spared a lot of the heartbreak of being a lifelong Rutgers fan.

Have a HS senior now and damn... it was a pain in the ass. One fee after another... want your SATs sent to a school? cha ching. Want to apply to a school? Cha ching. I will NEVER understand these people that apply to 20 schools. WHY???
We kept my son at 7 schools and I only said "Why?" to one since even if he got in, he wasn't going.
Blessed that he got accepted to his #1 school right away. We didn't do early decision, but rather did "early action" making things a little less tense.
He also didn't get into Rutgers, but that's ok as it wasn't really a good fit for him.. It has gotten ridiculously competitive to get in.

20 schools because of the common app. It’s easy to click on the school and apply. But $75 - $100 app fee is crazy.
My older daughter applied to 12 schools. My younger daughter 8 schools.
Back when I was going through the process we had to fill out the applications by hand. I wasn’t doing that for more than a few schools.
Really Just starting in our family. My oldest (daughter) is a junior in HS and wants to study Psychology. Looking within a 2-3 hour radius max. and we've taken a few tours starting last year. She took the SAT for the first time this past weekend.... hoping i can persuade her to look more seriously at Rutgers but so far she really wants a much smaller school
My son is a senior, but we bypassed the typical admissions process as he’s a baseball player. Very stressful process. Class of ‘25 is probably the worst time to be a baseball commit. Roster sizes were cut from 40 to 34 players in Division I for Spring ‘25, meaning 1,800 players needed to be cut nationwide.
Good luck to all of the student who applied this year. If this is your first time doing this, you should know that your kid's anxiety will lessen as soon as they get their first letter of acceptance. Even students who have strong academics have a sense of doubt over their admission chances, and they just need that one "win" to erase their fears.
Another word of advice from a counselor at a prestigious high school - If you a kid doesn't get into their dream school, they will be disappointed, but they should remember that their disappointment stems from their belief of what attending their experience at the school MAY have been like. Their image and dreams may not match the reality of the experience. That's why many students transfer.
Finally, good news for students in the future - Colleges will be dealing with an "enrollment cliff" in the next few years, so college admissions should be less selective as the number of high school students declines.

Yes the 2025 class is the largest graduating HS class in US history. The next few years, the graduating classes shrink due to the 2008-2010 Financial Crisis having an impact on US birth rates.
Did she come out saying how hard the math module 2 was? My son took it and was in the room with some other big brain kids (one already has a 1510 in his pocket but his parents want more) and they all said some of the questions were ridiculous. I told him that while they were hard it actually isn’t a bad sign becasue of the adaptive testing meaning he did well up till that point (especially on module 1) or he wouldn’t have seen those types of questions.
Can anyone recommend a good SAT tutor in Monmouth county? We are on a wait list for a woman in Colts Neck but it does not appear it will materialize and it's already mid March.
the new SAT is crazy. When my daughter walked out the SAT she said she 100% got all of the questions on the first part correct and the first question of the second part. After that she had no idea what any of the answers were. Thankful she also took the old version of the test fall 2023.
My family has the good fortune of having two back to back. While it was great in HS watching them play sports on the same team paying two college tuitions is no bueno.
We live outside of NJ and RU wasn’t in the cards for us - kids didn’t even apply as we know one or two folks who were class valedictorians scoring 30 on the ACT who were admitted but got no scholarship money. Just like most big state schools I presume they rely on out of state kids paying full freight.
It’s interesting as this exercise highlighted differences in my kids. My oldest who is the college freshman knew exactly where he wanted to go from day one. My now senior is extremely torn. Most schools are comparable and cost at this point but except his dream school lol. Thankfully he has a little more time to decide.

My son used the company in Bell Works. I can't remember the name. But we were happy with them. A private college prep person helped with applications and essays.
