OT: Belmar beach badge checkers don’t fool around

That link is pretty cool!
Rode by Gillian’s today at lunch on my bike Interesting that they are already removing the name and decor from the facade
Just did Seaside Heights on that link.. had no idea they reclaimed sedge islands in the bay to make land. Rutgers stadium area is interesting too.

Gillian's Wonderland Pier - hope Ocean City votes down everything the new owner wants to do. Make the land open space.. a park.. give it to the high school next door.. condemn it..

This link you can compare 1933 to 2020 in NJ Aerial photos
They legally can't say no if the new owners propose a currently approved use. Also, can't condemn the land without a well-documented public use. Is the high school seeking new land due to capacity issues? Kind of hard to cite the need for open space in that area when the freaking beach is 50 feet away.

Perfectly fine to say no if the new owners are asking for a use variance.

Cal has professional lifeguards. You don’t have to pay to go to the beach. The beach is for everyone.

Horrible that NJ does that.
Aren't they paid by fees the state charges for other recreational activities? If so, in essence they are charging only those who want to participate the same as NJ does.

I believe well before you lived out that way, Cali voters passed a proposition eliminating sources of funding for beaches for such things as cleaning and maintenance and they turned to crap until it was reversed.
Do you think they would adopt an older person to help them spend all the moneyy
It was back in th early/mid 90's. As I remember it was a very contentious situation that took several years to resolve.

Kiddie Rides and Mini Golf?
I remember Kirsch's (spelling) and the giant waterslide North of Gee Gee's (a shell of it's former self) and Gee Gee's having a larger arcade.
I don't remember Kiddie Rides.

Mini golf-I remember there being a least one place a block or two West of the Osprey- is that the one you are referring to?

Belmar lost their mini golf years ago. Closest one north of Manasquan is Bradley beach-sure Pt. Pleasant has mini golfs and rides, but it's a zoo to park there most days.

Oh wow, never knew that. Before my time. Those little tanks look like fun.

Some similar ones:

Found this too:

"Originally “Squan Beach”, it had a number of early pavilions, which provided food, beverages and dancing for the visitors. These have been replaced by a number of small restaurants and a small “penny-arcade” that is popular with kids today. Make sure you try the skee ball machine! The old wooden boardwalk was replaced in the 1950s with the asphalt paved boardwalk of today."

There were so many "kiddie land" type parks way back when because of a few factors:

- new accessibility with everyone having cars and highway projects (oddly inspired by Hitler's Autobahn)

- the baby boom after WWII

- the rise of suburbs.. population spread wide making day trips easier/shorter

- prior to the above, most amusement parks were geared toward public transport. often built at the end of rail lines to boost ridership on weekends. Palisades Park was a good example.. ferries and rail was used from NYC to get there.

The original amusement park boom in the USA began after the US Civil War circa 1870s-1890s.

BTW.. Railways played a big part before the auto boom and highways.. check this link Jersey Shore Railroads

Yeah, I believe they got tired of replacing the boardwalk after storms. As you can see, unlike other beaches it wasn't raised much and had to be replaced a few times.

Yes, just south of Ice Cream on 9, we went after getting ice cream(temporarily closed this year). Hell, if we still had a Bed, Bath and Beyond, I could have made a day of it.

When I was in HS we would do Ice Cream on 9, Checkers and mini golf lol. That was always the cheapest mini golf and one of the nicest. IMO Ice Cream on 9 best ice cream in that area.

Close call in OC

Lucky. heard the fire trucks and then more trucks from Marmora coming over the bridge Could see the smoke from my roof deck but seems like they put it out pretty quickly as the smoke quickly disappeared

Big fire in Brielle last night--Manasquan, South Wall and other departments called to help. Wind driven fires in old, large structures are a pisser. @e5fdny , @kupuna133

Heard the fire trucks sirens . Glad everyone got out safely. Correct wind was something last night. Sirens sounded like they were going in all different directions. Must have been additional alarms because there was minimum 30 minutes between initial and next barrage of sirens.

Think the fire sparked back up. 2 engines and the chiefs truck just blew by me as I was on river view drive by Manasquan River golf club.

This would suck if you lived on that street but overall I kind of like the idea

I like the Wonderland Square or Commons idea better, but who's going to build that? Iconia owns the land and has the money to redevelop the site. Just would like to see their proposal scaled down a bit so it's not too overwhelming.

square is a pipe dream by some locals who have no financial backing and not a financial success for whomever thinks they are building it

Exactly. It's ass backwards for a public group or even local gov to proposal a specific redevelopment plan. They really have no idea of financial reality and what is possible. Those groups need to react and help shape what developers propose.

Icona does a fantastic job with their designs. OC would be stupid to impose too many restrictions on him. That square design is an absolute abomination.

agreed, I'm all for it. wonderland is kind of an eyesore anyway and he's keeping the ferris wheel and merry go round which are what most people were concerned about. Its nice seeing the ferris wheel all lit up when you come over the bridge

Very good memories on that Ferris wheel as a kid. Love that it’s staying.

Its not that bad.

I live a few blocks from the Icona in Avalon. I really dont notice any auto traffic. The traffic is getting to the shore. REally not much traffic on the island. It does not turn the neighborhood into I-95. The Wonderland pier and boardwalk were already generating traffic. The 250 room hotel traffic will simply replace the amusement park traffic.

The one thing I notice about the Icona and Reeds is they extend the season. They create foot traffic in the off season when the town was dead. I consider that a good thing. I think their main goal is the wedding business. They are not after for the $1 kiddie ride business. They want the 100k weddings.

Is OC still dry? CAn they serve alcohol at private events?
