OT: Best States to Live in (2024)

I think California is the best state to live in with two pretty big caveats:

1. You must have enough money to live reasonably well, and
2. You have to okay with some weird stuff. Not Florida weird, but some pretty weird stuff goes down here.

It also helps to be kinda chill about the inevitable natural disasters.
Lots of homeless to step over in CA these days.

Its not that bad a walk from where the Airtrain let's you off to Terminal A. There's also a shuttle.
EWR is fine, especially if you park in short-term lots. They just need to better organize flights/destinations so travelers don't leave from C but return to A (or vice versa).

NJ has

- among the lowest crime
- the best education
- the highest income
- mountains and beaches
- one of the best intl airports in the US
- Access to NYC and Philly
- tons of walkable small towns and mid size cities
- legal weed and the right to control your own body

Should be #1 IMO. Boston shuts earlier than Hoboken/JC.

I go months without seeing a homeless person, it’s all about location, location, location. This morning, I stepped over several going to get my morning coffee in Venice beach.
Are they cleaning up any now that Newson is getting involved?

Where are you in CA? Orange County, I hope. :)

Are you sure? I heard every area of every city was safe until 3.75 years ago, and also every rural and exurban area is extremely safe and has absolutely no violence or problems ever. Also Chicago and LA and NYC are totally unsafe but Oklahoma City and Miami are absolutely delightful and crime free.

Shuttle is surpassingly good and fast
Thought I was going to miss a connection from Tampa to Burlington, VT
Got off plane, only had 25 minutes to board from Terminal C to Terminal A
Shuttle was right there, made the flight with ample time to spare

Only west of the Cascades. East side, where I live, is dry as a bone.

Even the west side has super-nice summers with considerably less rainfall than NJ.

Comparing monthly precip, winter is the only season that's rainier in Seattle than New Brunswick.

I have my own criteria but I live in NJ because it is the best state for me, otherwise I’d move. It’s the most densely populated state so I’m obviously not alone in my thinking.
Yes because if you move and NJ is so dangerous and unsafe that clearly no sane person would move in to replace you and could never sell your house at fair value and the entire woke state would be left crushed by all those fleeing to the un-woke places and NJ will be ruined.... hmmmmm 🤔

NJ has a lot of great places to live
Safe, "leafy," burbs that are amongst the best in the country

Unfortunately, there's also some really bad areas as well
Newark, Trenton, Atlantic City, Camden, large parts of Jersey City, etc. - which is why we get a bad rap

"Rank" articles are just clickbait.

Crime stats aren't even reliable anymore
Lots of cities dont even report crimes anymore

It really burns your hide that crime is plummeting right now. That's why you have to resort to more conspiracy theories. NJ is a great place to live!

Any ranking table that uses actual statistics will show NJ as one of the best states in the nation to live and raise a family.

High incomes, low crime, low poverty rates and amazingly good stats for children and raising a family.

The state has many problems like high taxes and complete incompetence in Trenton.

The fact that the fools in Trenton will not promote and market this state in a positive way is amazing.

NJ is #1 in my book, but I'm biased, lol. Growing up here was great, 9 years at RU were great, 31 years at Merck were great, and the last 4 years retired were pretty damn good too (and the last 30 have been in Metuchen, which is also pretty nice). So much to do within 1-2 hours drive: great towns, amazing restaurants from low end dives to high end destinations, the Shore, the mountains and lakes, fantastic history, mostly very good schools, wonderful diversity, and of course Rutgers!

The crime in those cities pales to what happens in other states. St. Louis, New Orleans and Baltimore usually rank among the most dangerous in the world. Crime in Newark, Camden, and JC I happen to know are down. That is not to say there are no problems, but less than most, absolutely. The rate of violent crime in NJ is low for a reason.

Yep, not disagreeing with that, all three of those cities have some really bad areas and get super sketchy
