ot: bob diacco Fired from uconn

from http://footballscoop.com/The-Scoop/

UConn: Bob Diaco has been let go the school has announced. The move is effective January 2nd. In three seasons under Diaco, UConn won 11 games. UConn AD David Benedict announced, “I know this may come as a surprise to our fans and supporters given the timing of this decision, however it became apparent to me that a change in program direction is necessary at this time.”

His 3-4 only works with top shelf talent. It's way too conservative (2 high shells) and requires a mammoth DT to keep his LBs clean. Most importantly, he needs stud OLBs who are equally adept at rushing the QB and dropping into coverage.

He wasn't some Xs and Os whizkid. He was an adequate coordinator who benefitted from a stacked roster.

With conference realignment it is tough for programs like UConn's to recruit. I actually feel bad for some programs who have been left out. When it comes right down to it, had it not been for our media-market location, we are in the same situation as UConn, Cinci, and others, trying to scrape by and firing coaches who, after all, are typically the fall guys. Had it not been for our invitation to the B1G, the birthplace of college football might have been euthanized.

Clearly you haven't been to a game at the Rent or interacted with their fans. They have an incredibly high opinion of themselves and dismissive attitude about us. I hope they dump football and join the Big East. One more bad hire might just do that - they are hemorrhaging money with no positive glide slope.

That is all true, but sadly for us Flood's last few recruiting classes were at the level of UConn, effectively blowing our B1G advantage. Glad that Ash and company have us back to where we should be where recruiting is concerned.

he should have asked me before he took that job. Non P5 school, stadium not on campus, no local talent to recruit. Dumb move. Should have stayed at FUND for another year something would have opened up

Spend 5 minutes reading their disgusting fans posts on the Boneyard and you'll hope and wish they die choking on their G5 blood.

Yes, we are very fortunate to be located where we are. If not for our geographical location we would never been considered for the B1G. Actually very shocked UCONN only gave Diacco 3 years. WTF. Not even a full recruiting cycle.

Bob Diaco was Broyles Award winner in 2012 (asst coach of year). Hired by Warde Manuel who went on to greener pastures at Michigan.
why asst coaches (like any non proven HC,)are allways a roll of dice.FWIW.

Ok, they missed on conference alignment but even beyond that UConn has been lapped by Temple, Houston, etc. within the AAC. BD did fine but if UConn ever has a chance of jumping (to where I don't know) they need to win and win big. I would not be surprised if they hired a big time coach and threw a lot of money at him. Think a Tom Coughlin type

Weird timing, but maybe it was to lessen a buyout with the post New Year's effective date.

They had given him a 2 year extension, and a raise in May, so very strange on all fronts.

They don't have anybody that we offered.
Have a few that turned down the BC French however.

This could be good news for us, as PSU OC could take the job and then we could jump in on free-for-all for their recruits

With what money?

He was the OC there at one time and UConn wants a offensive coach after the last few years of miserable results. If they want him and pay him, they will get him.
I admit it will be interesting to see what he does. He can always stay another year at PSU and get a P5 HC job in 2018.

Their class was recently worse than Harvard's. I'm pretty certain any PWOs at RU would be their best recruit this year.
Maybe someone was smart enough to recognize that it wasn't only the on field performance but the recruiting was terrible. They can foresee that things were only going to get worse.

doubt Moorehead would go to Uconn after he just turned down Temple ..
though it would be good for us if he did go..recruit wise.

With what money?

UConn spends a crazy amount of money on athletics. BD was making roughly $1.7M. They are at a critical stage. I have no idea where they could pull the money from but they are re type of school that must hire big or they are bound to stay irrelevant. I think they know what they have to do.

UConn FB is the very definition of a no win coaching job.

I'm no fan of UConn but I wouldn't be too sure of that. 7-8 years ago would you have said that Temple is a great Non-P5 job? Their last 3 coaches went to Miami, BC and the last guy had a choice between Oregon and Baylor.

A state school that is not scrutinized nor thrashed daily by their local media ( like a Star Liar or Bergen Rag).

Was shocked to hear a few years ago that they were deep in the red. With successful attendance in WBB (which happens in very few places) and MBB, I would've thought they'd turn a tidy profit.

Please don't feel bad for them

I wonder if someone reached out to Schiano. The timing here seems like it might be based on a preferred candidate being immediately available. Let's say the uconn admin has one goal, of being able to get into a power five conference. Schiano would be a great choice for that.

Diaco is weird guy, but whoever they get, it's a very tough job. No natural recruiting base, dump of an off campus stadium, but nevertheless arrogant fans used to winning at BB. Hopefully their FB continues to wither and eventually dies.

I remember them saying that they had the best run AD in this area. May have been a while ago, but I would have to think they're hamstrung in hiring a coach with a decent coaching staff. They may not have the money at this time, but who knows. They have shown a propensity to make up the money. We'll see who they hire. If that's of any importance to us.
