OT: Electric vehicles

Sure. Let’s ignore all of the owners of 1st generation Model Ss from 2012 still charging to 85-90% of their batteries’ original capacity 10 years later.
Lay off the propaganda coming from those threatened by EVs. You’ll find yourself less angry and you’ll embarrass yourself less on public forums like this.
Looks like you are the one angry. Have fun ya tree hugger paying off your car loan and a battery loan at the same time. Embarrassed? For what?

Imagine being so miserable that you post in a thread you have no interest in and try to put down people who care about the environment and/or are interested in new car technology.

I think there is a word for that, it’s “loser”.

I'm not 100% sold that buying an EV is doing as much for the environment that some claim. Certainly reduced emissions during operation, but not sure of the net effect when you consider harvesting the raw materials, manufacturing, etc. And I'm buying a F150 Lightning. I'm doing it more because the technology is interesting, lower maintenance, and hopefully saving on gas costs. No loan for me for the vehicle or the replacement batteries. 🤷‍♂️

Is harvesting the materials worse than harvesting oil?

Pretty sure we've been down this road already.

Myth #5: Electric vehicles are worse for the climate than gasoline cars because of battery manufacturing:

https://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/electric-vehicle-myths#Myth5

Facts no longer matter. Whatever team these individuals are playing for are anti EV. They've made it their mission to lie, distort, and misinform. RUBlackout7 called it: Losers.

The bottom line is a sustainable energy transportation system is the only path forward. There are zero logical arguments to dispute that statement.

Can't fix stupid. As a process engineer in a manufacturing plant, we were always trying to out engineer things the operators of the automated equipment might/could do. That principle held then too. If people did not follow common sense and the procedures, there would be equipment downtime, not because of equipment, but because of operator error.

And some of these terrible drivers will try to sue the manufacturer for a defect or failure to warn. They should look in the mirror for the defect.

Let me know when we are cleaning up lithium ion spills 10+ years later like oil spills
That's an extreme example of something that rarely happens.

Here is a more fair assessment from the right wing MIT. And there is no exact way of calculating the impact. But it is difficult to trust any information coming from China.

lol

Third time this was posted, sport, including our esteemed moderator. Don't know why you think LOL. This area needs less ICE powered vehicles on the road considering the density of people and traffic. You know, you might even benefit by it being easier to breathe on those hot days you hate so much.

Extremist EV advocation or demonization stances are both very stupid and people taking extreme viewpoints ought to be mocked and ignored.

If we're being objective and reasonable, then we have to say that the jury is still out on just how environmentally wise a wholesale switch to 100% EV vehicle adoption will be. EV adoption is still in it's infancy and we have a long way to go and a lot to learn about it yet. As with most technological advances, such as with ICE vehicles, we'll certainly discover plenty of unforeseen issues w/widespread EV adoption.

Having said that, there also seems to be pretty strong evidence that, even factoring in EV component production, widespread EV adoption can greatly cut down on the amount of carbon dioxide emissions humans produce (as compared to ICE vehicle use today). One key component to realizing the full potential of carbon-cutting due to EV adoption is ensuring energy production methods used to produce the electricity for EV charging employ lower carbon-emission methods. And that's obviously a work in progress.

People should be skeptical of the rosy projections of EV adoption perfection put out by evangelists. But people should also be skeptical of anti-EV sentiment given that most such sentiment has its origins in propaganda put out by special interests with financial interests in petrochemical raw materials production.

I also don't understand why he's laughing about the incentives.

But I also am pretty sure we're still a long way from EV adoption getting to a point where it can perceptibly impact our breathing on hot days. The number of ICE vehicles out there still vastly outnumbers the adoption of EVs. And in some places, the power for generating electricity isn't produced in a very clean manner.

We're getting there, but it's gonna take way more EV adoption and lots of improvements in energy production and delivery.

I hate that I'm considering buying a car soon. Prices have gone bonkers - and on the ev front - I really hate the idea of buying sight unseen.

I would consider an S but that yoke is an automatic no now.

I hate the uninspired interiors on the 3/y and also lack of leather.

I like the Rivian R1s but again lack of leather - FML

Not into the mach-e

Not much else out there to touch and feel in my range - the Porsche is another 40k above the s

I put my new SUV purchase on hold for now. Prices, even for ordinary cars, are totally nuts right now but won't stay nuts forever.

My advice to everyone who can delay is to avoid getting a new car for as long as possible or until the market adjusts. Could be at least a year, though, maybe more.

If I absolutely had to buy something today, I'd try to negotiate a lease on something with relatively low demand and extremely low depreciation (be it an EV or ICE car). That way, while the cost of the vehicle is still stupid high, the resale value will also be stupid high (this will be the biggest point of negotiation), so the overall out of pocket could be kept reasonably normal. Maybe.

The key here is finding a low-demand car model and a dealership willing to negotiate in good faith on the lease terms. The initial lease offers out there these days are typically total rip-offs. Dealerships are jacking up the capitalized cost (the price of the car) while attempting to use a depreciation rate that doesn't factor in how much used cars are selling for at the moment. Very profitable for the dealership, very unfair to the buyer.

I should point out that if everybody put off buying cars, it would force pricing lower.

Yeah I'm trying to hold off - I need this itch to go away. There is zero reason for me to actually do something other than wanting a change for sake of change

Then put it off. You'd be throwing away money, basically.

Prices will normalize at some point. If inflation continues and we experience a real and long-term recession, and if the Fed raises rates more (almost certain), then that will likely drive down demand which will allow supply-chain issues to resolve, which could eventually lead to an over-supply. That would be the time to buy.

Might not happen that way, of course, but I don't really need a new SUV at the moment, so I can afford to wait patiently and see what happens. Be nice to get a car for 10% under MSRP rather than 10% over MSRP.

Let's do an experiment. On a hot day, when your garage is over 80 degrees, you start an ICE vehicle in your garage with the door closed. I'll start an EV vehicle in my garage. It will be like a steel cage match. Whoever lasts the longest wins.

DISCLAIMER- this was a totally farcical post. DO NOT start any vehicle in your garage with the door closed. DANGER, DANGER Will rogers. This might happen.

The WHO estimates 7 million annual premature deaths due to air pollution.

Now, now. It's not fair creating rules that artificially constrain the situation as to produce a certain outcome.

We need to have a more realistic contest. We take our cars, your EV and my ICEV, to a park, along with a dozen hookers. At the park, we exit our cars, fire up a grill and BBQ some ribs and chicken. While grilling and eating some ribs and chicken, we turn on one of the cars for 60 minutes, then, subsequently, turn on the other car for 60 minutes.

At the 60th minute of each car's test, we ask all twelve hookers to tell us how hot they are on a scale of 1 to 10. It's critically important to use that exact language. We must ask: "how hot are you on a scale of 1 to 10".

Then we compare notes. Pretty sure there will be no variance at all in their responses. 🙂

I know it's vegan leather (plastic), but the seats in Tesla vehicles are incredibly comfortable. On a long trip, Autopilot + comfy seats really reduces road fatigue. And unlike most other auto makers, Tesla makes their own seats.

I've not once seen a vegan leather that doesn't cause my ass to sweat. Have they solved that issue? If it doesn't breathe I'm not buying it

Only if we use electric grills that do not emit CO2.

I find these posts mind-boggling. After adjusting the 3 cushions on our seats with the controls on the side of the seats which then are saved under our names, my girlfriend and I think it is the most comfortable car seating we've ever used. She falls asleep next to me on any trip of length, every time. I'm at a loss for these folks.

One can find at least a few people complaining about such things on car forums. It is very subjective. Often the complainers are really large people.

Elon did refer to the first generation Model S seats as "stone toadstools", but dozens of iterations have been made since those days. Quotes from 2017 are worthless. They're totally different seats.

To be fair there will be complainers about anything subjective - for me I just need to know the ventilation works well. I despise any type of seating that doesn't breathe... I just sweat easily too - I'll go to dinner and most places have vinyl seating - if I don't get up frequently I will legit sweat through my pants

Federal EV tax credit returning?

https://electrek.co/2022/07/27/senate-moves-forward-ev-tax-credit-reform-tesla-tsla/

I rarely agree with Bac, but do we need it? Same goes for the new NJ credit imo.

EV demand and adoption is at an all time high. The supply is the problem.
Does this $80,000 limit apply now?

"Zero-emission vans, SUVs, and trucks with MSRPs up to $80,000 qualify."

My understanding is that there is no such limit currently:

the "vegan leather" name needs to gtfoh. it's plastic. just admit it FFS. one of my biggest pet peeves about the auto industry at large. "vegan leather", "nu luxe", "sport-tex". arggggggggggggggg
