OT: Electric vehicles

There’s a little bit of hyperbole in “no one is buying teslas.” Surely it was assumed market share would shrink as other companies caught up. The Model Y alone is still outselling Rivian 10:1 in California. I think Hyundai and Kia are the real ones to watch.
Market share and sales are two different things. Actual sales are down significantly.

I think the market share drop is even more significant as overall EV sales were up in 2024.

Though you may be talking Germany specifically here, and I'm not sure their overall EV sales.

Sales down 60% is a far cry from no one is buying?
The comment I was replying to was in general, not specific to Germany. Europe seems to be a little late to the party on a lot of things these days. I see the Model Y transition also being used as the excuse, probably a weak one.

I was down to a Rivian and the Y, just wasn’t very close cost wise and I think Rivian could use a few more years to mature tech/vehicle wise. It’s definitely more of a luxury brand. If it can make something similar to the Ioniq it will get interesting
R2/3 are supposed to compete with the model Y. The R1 was Rivian version of Model S. R2/3 is for the regular users.
Correct, but still a far cry from no one is buying teslas
You are correct... "no one is buying Teslas" is hyperbolic phrase, but to an investor sales down 60% in Germany is the same effect as no one is buying teslas.

That is a crazy number to be down for a company that is supposed to be growing like gangbusters.

To the eye (my eyes anyway), they just don't do it for me.

I like the S and that's about it at this point.

True, but I'm thinking of a particular person who was the most well versed on the EV topic in this thread.
DogShit was well-versed on Tesla and only Tesla. Which is why his broader takes were laughably awful.

The Forester hybrid is on track to come out this spring and looks good. With some additional included features, it might be within $1500 of the premium trim package 15 similarly equipped. In the short term the problem waiting could be tariffs. These will be made in the US in 26 but will be imports to start. 26/33 vs 34/35 mpg, with a little more HP with combined electric. 180HP vs 194HP. slightly heavier but estimated to be only about 300lb extra. So close, but I think I have to grab the CVE to avoid tariff risk. Need something in the next 6mo. ugh. no politics pls. it is what it is. Once the tariff risk is gone I think they will sell a ton of these.

Read an article the Chinese EV are taking over in Australia since they don’t manufacture EV so no tariffs necessary. However, the US and Europe wants Australia to stop EV sale due to national security and the cars can spy on them.
