Being a moderator doesn’t mean not having or voicing opinions, no matter how much we might disagree with them.

A moderator is supposed to enforce rules and, where necessary, act to deescalate conversation. While I agree with you that the memes in question are dumb, as most memes generally are, I don’t think they violated any rules or exacerbated anything in any problematic way.

OTOH, insulting people‘s intelligence IS actually against the rules. And he and other mods let it go most of the time (even when it’s aimed at them) where it doesn’t escalate things too much, which it rarely does here. IMO, that‘s pretty good moderation.

Just my opinion.

Software is never finished. However, shipping software into production means that it has been fully tested and passes all acceptance criteria for that release. "Not crashing into things and people" is a pretty persistent, non controversial requirement for an MVP. But FSD gets shipped anyway, despite not being able to pass that test.
What are your test requirements?
 
@Knight Shift went off roading today. Put the truck in off-road mode with locked diff. It was a very muddy trail. The truck did well with stock all terrain tires. It did slide here and there but was never in any threat of being stuck.
I'm having a heck of a time connecting to my charge station app. Did a factory reset. No go. Doing a hard restart, by powering off for 40 minutes, per Ford support.
BTW, read some interesting threads in the wake of the battery issue, which looks like it may be a minor/isolated issue, on charging rates and charge %. Advisable to charge to max charge of 90% of capacity and to charge slowly as possible when at home. I had already dialed down by charge station from 80 amps to 60 amps, but did not realize I could control this in the charging app. That led to an hour plus time drain of trying to connect to the app, doing a factor reset by taking the cover off the charging station and then calling Ford.

All in all, still very happy. Not driving much. Just got back from one vacation, heading out on another. The plan was to get out of cold/snowy NJ in February. It's beautiful here, and scheduled to snow some more later this week in Sedona, where we are headed.

I think at this point even he knows he's way out of his depth but for whatever reason, he can't stop playing gotcha.

None of us are beating up on Tesla. None of us are being unfair to Tesla. We had nothing to do with the recall. None of us (talking about the recall right now) are anti-EV and I'm pretty sure all of us think that EVs will wind up being a net positive for humanity.

Hell, I own Tesla stock so I obviously want the company to do well. But I also don't want to see cars (Tesla or otherwise) self-driving themselves into people. Not sure why he keeps insisting there's no problem when it's in his own best interest for the problem to be acknowledged (as it has been w/the recall) and corrected.
 
Driver dead, passenger and four firefighters injured in Tesla crash. No info yet on the cause of the crash, but the fire truck was at the scene of a prior incident when struck by the Tesla.

Years ago, it really seemed like there was some industry momentum, at least among a subset of major automakers, to skip level 3 and hold out for 4 for essentially the reason you're stating. That does not seem to be the case anymore.

more evidence that you should be avoiding talking about how software is built. you don't have a clue, yet you still try to talk down to folks who work in that field.

I assume it's fear of competition driving it. A lot of people buying cars are wowed by the tech. This is tech and sounds great to folks who might sit in traffic or whatever. So I understand why the automotive companies are pushing it.

It's up to the federal or, more likely the state, government(s) to push back and disallow it so it's no longer a competition forcing everybody to participate.

My custom trailer hitch cover (profile pic) got bent when I was off roading. Guess I was having too much fun.

Got that once. There's an intersection in Asbury Park at the end of Kingsley, heading North. At the end at Wesley Lake, if you stop at the stop line, you can't see to the left, and there is a lot of room after the stop line before you are in the flow of traffic coming from the left. Full stopped with my rear wheels on the stop line so I could see to the left. Proceeded. Got stopped and read the riot act on how I ran the stop sign. I tried to explain, to no avail. Fortunately, I had a get out of jail free card, and I left with a warning.

In your case, you didn't have clear visibility. Doesn't really apply to the FSD beta update situation.

And yes, to answer @Andy117 , I have heard of instances where people got nailed for rolling stops, but again, FSD beta was only doing this when there was clear visibility in all directions.
 
Another case of automotive software released with serious bugs.


It used to be that ECUs were programmed once per car generation and that was it. So manufacturers made sure they got stuff as right as was humanly possible.

Now automakers are pushing software releases out onto the road, touting OTA updates as if that was a good thing. But what it mostly is is a mechanism that encourages the same kind of short development cycles desktop software venders followed for years, producing notoriously buggy software to this day.

Most desktop software bugs are obviously not as problematic as bugs in the software that operates cars. At least in terms of safety, that is. Software bugs can cause a huge amount of financial damage. But automotive software bugs can cause crashes and injure or kill people.

I am not a fan of overly intrusive government regulation. But in this case, I think the government needs to step in and create some laws that enact more oversight into the world of automotive software. Create some regulation and create some new, private, independent testing companies to validate releases of automotive software, funded by automotive companies.

I'd prefer automotive companies police themselves. But it seems they aren't doing a good job of it right now.

Separate, but somewhat related...I absolutely hate the fact that auto makers are using software to limit the hardware you paid a lot of money for. "Pay us a monthly subscription or a one time fee to unlock ALL the horsepower your car was already built with" does not sit well with me.

Totally agree with you both. It's one of the ways that companies treat us all like financial idiots unable to recognize that they are screwing us cost-wise while telling us it's a feature. I could go on a long rant about all this, but I'll try to resist, mostly...

Freaking Verizon's predatory pricing and contracts - $30 to add a line, you get back $5 if you drop the line, WTF is that?. Adobe, Autodesk, et. al. all switching to subscription models. Poland Spring switching from 6 to 5 gallon bottles and writing us a letter informing us that they're "doing us a favor" by not charging us more for the more ergonomic bottles. GMAFB.

And now this auto industry subscription bullshit. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Love this - especially seeing the Gov there. Tesla has been an incredibly important part of California’s manufacturing economy. Tesla taking advantage of all the big brained techies in the Bay Area.
The Tesla fanboys were grousing that the Gov took too much of what should have been Elon's spotlight, but that's what politicians do (don't care the party)--take credit for things that they had little to do with.

California has long been blessed with outstanding universities, a high population of immigrants from Asian countries that produce a lot of engineers and scientists, fantastic weather, and a large and geographically diverse state. That old NUMMI (GM/Toyota) plant that went belly up was a perfect place to start EV manufacturing. It was a great move by Tesla to by the facility, after giving strong consideration to building a new facility in New Mexico.

Just watched a video overview of the Ioniq 6. The looks are interesting - would have to see one in person. Interior looks pretty nice, IMO. The whole package looks sleek.

And has an operable sunroof. Sweet.


Range still ain't great, but overall, it looks like it ought to sell pretty well.

Great announcement and gracious remarks by both. California catches a lot of shit, some deserving, but at the end of the day, it's an integral part of the nation's economy. This announcement will help to further ensure the world's best and brightest stay in the US or come to the US

Fyi ..in 2010, Tesla paid $42 million for that NUMMI plant. Quite a steal.
