OT: Electric vehicles

As has been discussed in another thread - all those old, celebrated muscle cars were, by today's standards, quite slow.
True. A humble Toyota Camry made today is probably quicker than old muscle cars were. A hell of lot better handling, too.

OTOH, a number of sports car manufacturers have been sticking Camry engines in their sports cars today, including Lotus, IIRC.

So I did a thing today. My wife's niece's husband bought a Model 3. They were over today for a party, so I drove it.

I will admit - I really liked it.
Glad to hear, and honestly, not surprised. My father-in-law is a life long gear head. After he drove my Model 3 he said "Man, that thing is fun to drive!" He was blown away by the instant torque and ease of 1 pedal driving.

SR, LR, or performance?

It was the base model, RWD - I guess that's the SR. So based on the stats, my new S60 is actually faster - but the 3 was definitely enjoyable to drive. The tech is cool, it seems to handle pretty well, I like the weight of the steering. If I were inclined to get one I would probably get the LR, which is advertised as 0-60 in 4.4 seconds and fast enough for everyday use.

Why are people surprised that it’s a nice ride? It’s not like it’s cheap with a starting price of 45k. The biggest complaint I always hear is the interior finish with that entry price.

I honestly don't have a knock on the interior. It seemed pretty well put together, the gaps were consistent and aligned and the materials were acceptable.

The TV on the dashboard is obtrusive, but it's fun to watch.

me too but I’m driving Toyota and Honda. Guys I work with drive German luxury cars hate it.

I've had 3 A4s and an A3 and own a Volvo S60, which is generally viewed as having one of the better interiors in its class. The guys you work with are probably comparing the 3 with a BMW or a Merc - both have more interior elements, but I wouldn't say they're "nicer". Hell, I don't much care for BMW interiors, myself. The center screens are WAY too small and the array of center stack buttons aren't particularly intuitive.

It’s not that it’s just a nice ride, it’s just different than a regular car.

The acceleration is is like nothing I’ve experienced. Overall it’s just fun to drive. Hard to explain, would suggest test driving one if you haven’t
been in a model S. Great ride but I haven been S class and A8. The only difference is no sound.

Found out that some states are charging a fee aka tax for hybrid and electric vehicles to make up for lost gas revenue. Some are $200. Tried to find out if New Jersey has this for the Maverick hybrid, but couldn’t find either way on electrics and hybrids. Anyone know for our state.

I'll provide a 15 month update on our Y. Wife's car and she still loves it. We were driving recently and she said she never was much of a car person but just loves this car and enjoys driving it. A fellow Tesla owner told her it was life changing and she said the same but I told her not to say that to others as it sounds over the top. But we juggled cars one day and I took it to work and it is just nice to drive, smooth and fast. You know when you are on a highway and you are not comfortable with what is around you, like a truck or wacky driver, well with this if you have any opening you just gun it and extract yourself, almost feels like you are teleporting. Biggest thing is no issues or dealer visits in 15 months. I read recently EV owners were in better shape stuck in the Virginia snowstorm as it uses less energy to keep heat on and you don't have to worry about CO, one guy did a test and ran his Mach E for 12 hours while heating and it used 25% charge. One complaint is we have scraped up the rims on curbs and our belgium block, shame on us but I thought with all the sensors there would be a warning for this and even if not, the rim would be recessed so the rubber would take the hit.

Great explanation on the use of acceleration when in traffic. Merging onto highways has never been so easy

I didn’t see anything like this when I bought in NJ

Some of the noticable differences ICE vs EV:

No latency when you want to accelerate.
No transmission.
Handles different (better) because center of mass is lower and closer to the center of the vehicle.
If you drove an A8 and S class, I can assure you there are no differences. If you are making the jump from Honda or Toyota, yes.

What’s your ICE car?

Pils, did you have to pay an extra fee aka tax on your electric car in your state ?
No, I am in NJ, no sale tax and was able to get the $5k credit NJ was offering, but they have gone through the FY 22 funding, so if you want that try in July as I think it will be available again, but it goes quick.

My regular driver is a Kia Soul. We bought this for the kids to take to HS and get good at stick, but since I changed jobs and commute to NYC I am taking this and my kid takes the Honda Pilot. Needless to say huge difference between Kia and Tesla, less so with Pilot as it is pretty quick for an SUV but still not instant torque.

Didn’t think the Y qualifies for the NJ tax credit due to price?

That makes sense. It’s a big jump in price so you should expect a big jump in experience. I do agree with you on the servicing.

It did when I bought it, price has gone up due to supply chain and inflation so it is over the $55k limit I believe.

I've owned a Y for a similar length of time and experience has been really similar. The single best thing for me is never having to go to a gas station. (NJ Is unusual in that you have to pump your gas in 48 other states [Oregon].)

I'll add that I've never gotten fully comfortable with the autopilot - Tesla keeps the car in the exact center of the lane at all times. There's a lot of small adjustments being made when lane widths change (for example at on ramps) that can un-nerve me and my wife during congested conditions. I do like the autopilot on rural freeways.

Tesla crushed earnings.

Looks like the cybertruck will have to wait. Think it’s the smart move. Really need to focus on the lower price model first. As long as Tesla can keep up the margins, they should focus on volume products. CT was a gimmicky low volume thing anyway.

Seems like, for a lot of folks, their Tesla represents the pinnacle of their automotive experience. That is, it's the most expensive and fastest car they've owned. And often the commentary reflects that.

Hang out in luxury automotive forums, particularly in the up-market models sections, and you seem to get an entirely different set of comments about Teslas than you hear elsewhere. Not all negative, but far more balanced. And it's in those forums, among folks who value and expect true luxury, that the most fit and finish criticism can be found.

Pure ICE engines cannot match the acceleration dynamics of a pure EV. Even if they can match the 0-60 or 1/4 mile performance, the linearity won't be there. And I suspect what a lot of people identify as so thrilling, after the initial kick, is that steady linear build up in speed because, with most ICE cars, the torque either comes on late and fades, or it comes on quicker, but still fades.

OTOH, EVs cannot match the dynamics and experience of a high-revving, dual-clutch high performance sports car as it loudly slams up through the gears. And within ICE cars, some folks will prefer how an NA V8 or V10 sounds and feels while others will prefer how an NA or blown V6 sounds and feels.

There's just no "better choice", when it comes to cars, except the one a particular individual enjoys the most. Get what you like and can afford.

what about the sound of a small displacement 4 cylinder with a giant turbo?
