OT: Electric vehicles

Very good point. That's in line with the Hummer lineage, which was a major gas guzzler. Maybe the Hummer EV with that much batter power has a significant carbon footprint. 😜

Have the design specs for the Cybertruck been released, and does anyone know the projected size of the Cybertruck battery pack? The F150 Lightning?
Depending on trim, 98 to 131 kWh for Lightning.
Not much info on Cybertruck. Dual motor Cybertruck is supposed to be 120 kWh. They're also doing a quad motor.

As the to be owner of a Mach e, theoretically on 3/17 I’m well aware of the software issues having spent months reading the threads on https://www.macheforum.com/site/. Ford is not a software company and it shows in its early implementation of the Mach e. They’re getting better but they have a ways to go. Also be aware that if you live up north, like NJ, your mileage will not match the EPA projections because of the cold. We’re keeping an ICE car because, we’ll just because.

My Model 3 gets about 10-15% less mileage in the cold vs. a day like today.

What’s the point having a 4 door sedan go 0 to 60 in 2 seconds? It’s all a gimmick to sell cars/trucks. Hummer has a long waitlis. It’s a Production issue, not demand.

Yes.. yes I do.

It makes as much sense as electrifying a vehicle that would normally be a $50k gas sedan based on build quality and slapping on a plaid tag and selling it for $130k
 
Thing I dont get about going electric is that the grid is a mess and nobody cares
Power plants get knocked down without reliable replacement
Con Ed cant easily make repairs locally because they run out of parts not made since 70s
Now Con Ed wants 11% price increase

this is my concern as well...but there are others in this thread that don't think that this is a major concern, or that the demand for EV's is going to drive behavioral and investment changes in the infrastructure on its own.

The "grid" needs to be updated and improved. This is true with or without widespread EV adoption and home solar. A part of the smart grid includes constantly improving energy storage capabilities and long distance power transmission. One part of the overall solution for the northeast includes importing Quebec's hydropower.

A nationwide charging network will take WAY longer to build than anyone thinks. Biden’s $5B in 5 years will do nothing. Plus, what happens to all of the ICE vehicles? As the transition to EV occurs, do the values of ICE vehicles collapse? EVs are like 9% of sales so does the 91% driving off lots right now end up on the scrap heap in 5-10 years?

But Porsche will make it right for them all. Back a few years or so, after they had stopped the 991.2 GT2RS production and had switched the line over to 992 production, they had a car carrier capsize.

Porsche restarted the production line for the 991.2 model, which surely cost them a fair amount to do. Because otherwise, the folks whose cars were on that ship would’ve had to wait at least 4 more years, probably longer (the GT2RS doesn’t get built nearly as early in a generational cycle as other GT or ordinary 911s).

The downside for those of us seeking a build allocation for GT cars is that dealer ADMs are going to skyrocket now. Basically the RS models are nearly unobtainium already - this just makes things worse. 😨

Of course, GM knows they can’t do volume anytime soon so they roll out the high end low production model. Honestly, they are coping Tesla.

At a time when car prices are the highest in history, supply is apparently near all time lows, and demand is off the charts, a cargo ship with 1000 Porsches/VWs mysteriously catches fire?! Something doesn’t add up. A cargo ship carrying $100M+ in automobiles doesn’t have a fire suppression system?

Agree with everything you said. My problem is with the vehicle choice and I doubt they'll hit their low volume targets. 9,000lbs?? The battery pack alone weights more than a compact car. 47 mpg(equivalent). I imagine those specs don't excite the typical, environmentally conscious EV buyer.

but it excites enough of the crypto and stonks bros...and there would be enough to spend big $ on that behemoth.

While not exactly common, shipboard fires do occur. When the news first surfaced, a bunch of folks in the Rennlist 992 GT3/GT3RS forum starting posting about it and there were around 3-4 photos of ships on fire that weren't the ship in question. Which shows that such things do happen.

My understanding is that this ship had fire suppression systems. But the ship probably also had hundreds of EVs (with hundreds of EV batteries) aboard. Once those start going, it's probably going to be tough to bring that fire under control.

I can't imagine any reasonable reason or motivation for anybody to intentionally set a transport vessel carrying cars on fire like that. It's just one ship. VW/Porsche use a bunch of them and then operate constantly all year long. While a big loss to the shipping company and VW (not to mention customers), Porsche will obtain another ship to use soon enough, meanwhile, the factories keep churning out the cars at a high rate. So it's not like it's worth the risk to create a minor blip.

Now if it happens again, soon, to another VW/Porsche ship... that would strain the limits of simple coincidence (although there could be some kind of flaw with some batteries causing the fire, I suppose... who knows).

Belly, you seem to know about Tesla, the company and the car. Do you know, once the Texas factory is completely open, what percentage of Teslas sold in America will be made here and what percentage made in Germany/Communist China. I am hoping it is close to 100 percent.
