OT: Fran Brown hired by Syracuse

Fran Brown is a great recruiter, just ask Greg Schiano, that is not even debatable. Do you need to be a great position coach to be a good HC, I think most people in the industry would tell you not necessarily, two different skill sets. A HC needs to be a able to put together a competent staff, be a great recruiting closer, motivate players, work with the media, administration, alumni, and fans, and be able to attract investment in the program via outside sources. You don't need to be a great x and o guy at that position. They could do a lot worse than Fran Brown if they indeed go in that direction.

The skillsets of position coach, coordinator and HC are all different.

If Fran is hired as "CEO" of the football operation and has competent coordinators and position coaches, this could work. Even Greg has referred to the fact that he lets the coordinators run their respective units, and he gets involved in overall game planning. Most of his time is spent on a variety of other tasks, including NIL, recruiting, etc.

Sounds like an Ash, no head coaching experience. If it had to happen then I want someone with offense experience not defense. They were too cheap to hire someone with HC experience.

I don’t think so because they could get a Candle or Cignetti or Chesney and former HCs for whatever they end up paying Brown. These kind of coaches don’t cost a ton of money. Their goal is likely recruiter and northeast ties so that’s what they went after.

It would be a Shane Beamer type hire at USCe. I’m fine with coordinators but position coaches/recruiters less so but I suppose they’re hoping the recruiting connections and some of the UGA magic rubs off.

It’ll depend on his staff and what kind of connections he’s made in that regard.
High risk potential high reward type of hire if it goes this way. I kinda of like it for the Cuse. It will be interesting to see how well he can recruit in this situation. If this was pre-NIL and with a more restrictive transfer portal I would think his proven ability to recruit would continue upstate. I am no longer sure you can have the same level of success without a decent NIL wallet. The portal could help him but again can you get the same level of kid he has been getting out of South Jersey and Philly today without a bag?

Regarding his coaching chops or lack thereof, he will need to recognize his strengths and weaknesses and surround himself with some experienced assistants rather than young clones of himself. No Drew Mehringers run the offense.

Great recruiter but I didn't think he did much with our DB's while here. My guess is that he was the DB coach at Georgia in name only. At the end of the day does he really want to live in Syracuse? For Syracuse, outside of a great recruiter, this is a big risk taking a guy that never lead a program.

Perhaps a sign of desperation. While Candle would be solid hire, maybe they don't want to go down the MAC head coach road again. As you and I have said before, you never know if a hire will work out. The closest sure for not to fail hire would be Urban Meyer and that is not happening.

It's a head coaching gig. In the P5. He's a position coach. If he's actually offered it he'd be crazy to turn it down. He could fail at Cuse (the odds aren't in his favor) and he'd still always be in demand as a recruiter/db coach basically anywhere.

I say this often, there are only so many P5 jobs and they are multimillion dollar jobs. If you're an in demand coach sure you can pass on some opportunities but if you're a typical G5 coach, a coach from the lower levels (FCS), many coordinators or former HC who has already made his millions why wouldn't go for these limited opportunities. There are good coaches in these categories of candidates, some will work and some won't and that's the same for in demand coaches as well.

If you fail you go back to whatever you may have been doing before (millions of dollar richer) and if you succeed you can stay or move on to better opportunities.

Another beautiful October afternoon in The Cuse.

I had forgotten about Joey McGuire at TT, the river boat gambler. His profile is also similar. He was a position coach on Baylor's staff for Rhule and Aranda and he got the TT job because of his ties around the state. He's been above .500 in conference both his years in the B12 and had 6 and 8 wins overall.

Sure and I said that but wasn’t he a good recruiter at Temple, Baylor and here…he’s not going to get UGA level recruits but might get better than Syracuse otherwise would’ve gotten.

I don’t think that’s what a school with that profile needs but we’ll see how he does if he ends up being the choice.
Yeah he recruited well here & Temple. Pulled a lot of South Jersey and Philadelphia area kids. Neither school gets 100+ inches of snow annually like Syracuse.

Everyone acts like this is a retirement choice... these are 18 y/o kids they arent thinking about weather between Cuse and Rutgers, Penn State and Temple of all places. Fran has been a proven excellent recruiter and I think hell see more success at Cuse. This hire makes me nervous as an RU fan

Not really. Ash never had a reputation as a good recruiter.

haha, SU fans want KF for OL. Their board is mixed on Brown but it's good for RU to hire him. He won't do anything there

If Fran is hired Interested in seeing who he is able to hire as assistants. Wonder if he will be able to reunite with Elijah Robinson. Board will explode if he brings in Ti (hahahah)

I don’t think it matters who they hire as head coach. They have about 5 losses every year: Florida State, Clemson, NC State, NC, Miami, G Tech or Norte Dame. They will either be middle of the pack or the bottom of the pack whoever they hire. They might out recruit GT and that‘s it.

They should have just kept Barber. Barber did have one 10 win season. Their fans always thinks they should be better like when they fired Pasqualoni when he had several 8-9 win seasons. Just like our fans wanted Schiano fired the first time after 8-9 win seasons.

Elijah Robinson reportedly is going to stay on at A&M with Elko, potentially as DC.

It looks like Dan Mullen and Bob Chesney were plans A and B. Chesney may be waiting on the BC job. Joe Harasymiak and Manny Diaz are both better candidates. Brown is a high-risk, high-reward choice. Throwing someone into the deep end of the pool isn't a very good way to teach them to swim. If for some reason they don't drown, they probably won't be particularly loyal in the future.

I wonder if the press conference gets delayed due to the weather... :)

Posted this on premium, but the point stands

Unless they get a Phil Knight type donor, Cuse is done
They won't be included in the next round of expansion

It doesn't matter if Vince Lombardi, Parcells, Belechecick, Saban, Urban and Bear Bryant were all on the coaching staff over there, it's over
They can join Connecticut in the Independent league.

I noticed 5 Rutgers players listed recruited by Brown on the Cuse board and only one, RB Brown has some real playing time. Recruits that don’t pan out.

He is considered a great recruiter at Georgia because of 3 4 star NJ recruits. They would have gone to Michigan or Ohio State but they went to the defending national champion.

SU was unhappy with Babers "national approach" to recruiting.
SU aware that its past football success was built with local/regional emphasis

"Syracuse has always been — and will continue to be — a tough place to recruit, given its geography and climate, but there have been ways around that. Paul Pasqualoni, George DeLeone and others grinded to build a northeast recruiting base for SU that focused on recruiting in a five-to-six hour radius of the campus. Doug Marrone emulated that approach and made progress over his four years.

Babers, a West Coast native, came to SU with minimal local recruiting ties. He opted for a more national approach, and there was frustration within SU’s athletic department that he hadn’t built a larger presence around the northeast, according to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman.

Wildhack realizes SU’s four most successful coaches — Ben Schwartzwalder, Dick MacPherson, Pasqualoni and Marrone — were northeast natives, and that will play a role in this decision.

“Sometimes history can be a really good teacher,” Wildhack said. "

Most of the 4 star NE and NJ recruits are going to Penn State, Norte Dame, Ohio State and Michigan. Barbers recruiting nationally is the smartest move and Schiano started moving more in that direction. Not enough good players left to just recruit in the NE.

Even if he is hired, even if he does well recruiting, even if he brings in a great staff to coach those recruits .. none of that will matter.

Have you forgotten that these are the times of the transfer portal and NIL? A great player going somewhere for one year, then moving on to greener pastures elsewhere, is so commonplace it's becoming the norm. Great, he (or anyone else hired there), can put together a good recruiting class .. and for how long will those players remain there? If they're getting some attention, they'll move on to the next big thing at a bigger and better school.

And, that's Syracuse's Achilles' Heel. It's not getting/staying relevant. Didn't they have a good year or two recently? I can't even be sure because no one is talking about them. And, players these days don't want that. They want to go somewhere where people are talking, the team/conference/etc. are stable, and there's an opportunity to win (and potentially make money). Sure, that might not be every recruit. But, if Fran Brown's strongest quality is that he can identify players and recruit, he's going to have to do a HELLUVA' lot more than that in order to be successful.

It's not exactly easy to recruit to Rutgers but he did a good job here.
Exactly Fran will do a great job recruiting. He was able to bring talent to Temple and really ramp it up at Baylor and Georgia.

Pretty much anyone we talk about on these forums that was recruited to Rutgers during Schiano 2.0 specifically the first 2-3 classes had Frans fingerprints all over them.
