OT: Good Obscure Movies

I agree with the Sam Rockwell comment. He’s good in everything. The one where he plays Chuck Barris is great.

Also, I’d throw “Brazil” into the discussion. Very oddball, futuristic, Pythonesque, with a neat cameo by Robert DeNiro.

you're welcome.. and I will watch the Killers off that link myself...

and the reference above to Pope of Greenwich Village made me think of "After Hours"

And three Shakespear inspired flicks.. obscure only because of time..

After Hours is one of the funniest movies ever.
Also Dogma by Kevin Smith.

I'm getting old enough that I'm not sure what qualifies as obscure anymore, but these films are all really good ...

Sneakers

Three O'Clock High

The Toy

Let It Ride

My Blue Heaven

Mars Attacks - a true SciFi classic that never really got its due.

Some mentioned Gandolfini - a good one with him and Robert Redford is The Last Castle.

Everyone remembers Pulp Fiction, but the year after that Travolta was in another pretty good flick called Get Shorty.

"The Last Castle" was Ok. Honestly didn't think Gandolfini was that good in it.
A good prison movie is "Brubaker" with Robert Redford. Also was one of Morgan Freeman's first big roles.

I watched this one some Sunday morning or something and kinda enjoyed it. I wouldn't say it was good, but like a fun, predictable 80's horror flick.

Never heard of it and I like Danny Aiello. Whats it about?

"In 1976, Frank Pesce Jr. is a lucky man. His father, Frank Sr., is, however, very unlucky. One day, Frank Jr. buys a lottery ticket and finds that he has a good chance of winning. But Frank Sr. has some gambling debts to the mob and they are willing to take Frank Jr.'s ticket. Frank must decide what to do with the ticket."

"Let It Ride", leads me to a story;

In the movie the degenerate gambler put his winnings in his shoes.

So I was at Paradise Island casino and a friend won 36 K at roulette wheel. He was stressed out, how to get the money back into the US thru customs. I told him, as a joke, about the movie. He did it ! He paid another friend to take in 10 K and the rest was in his boots. He made it thru customs.

"In Cold Blood", Capote. One of the killers used stomped down cans inside his boots to look taller.

Thanks!!! Just found the complete movie on YouTube. I'll watch it today

I watched it this afternoon. Most of the movie was so/so as it was trying to figure out if it was A Bronx's Tale or It's a Wonderful Life.
However the last 20 minutes was EXCELLENT. It was worth it

Didn't mention that Tony Sirico aka Paulie Walnuts was in the movie. He played, what else, a henchman for a Mob boss!

Another silly corny but fun movie from when John Ritter was in his prime

Hero at Large

A lot of movies on this thread I wouldn’t say are obscure, but very good. I would add 3 O’Clock High, Breakdown, Beautiful Girls, Lords of Discipline, Reds

I was waiting if someone would post "three o'clock
high".... one of my favorite off beat movies with
several very funny scenes...

IMO, Sam Rockwell is a great actor.

I have a picture of Sam Rockwell as my avatar on the rivals main board... so I guess you can say I like him also

my favorite movie with him was the "Way, Way back"....

Another movie is The Hot Rock. It's a 70's "fun caper" as described in the attached Youtube video. With middling movies like Ocean's 11 and The Taking of Pelham 123 being remade, I'm surprised nobody redid this one.

Ok. I'm a junkie because I have seen every movie on this thread. Twice. Here is a list of crap. Hope you like.

Bone Tomahawk
Once Upon a Time in the West
Witchfinder General
The Seventh Seal (Max Von Sydow's first film, before he was Ming the Merciless and Brewmeister Smith}
Miller's Crossing. The best Cohen Brothers movie
A Touch of Evil
Rear Window
The Molly Maguires
Hard Times
Dark City
Dog Soldiers

That's off the top of my head. The Best Rears of Our Lives, but that's a bit blue...

Watch all of them.

There are a lot of Humphrey Bogart movies you have never seen. The Left Hand of God, The Big Sleep, In a Lonely Place, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Dude is the legend of the obscure movies.

Never see Lords of Discipline on TV - given its Rotten Tomatoes rating we may have been the only people to like the movie. There’s was also a movie with Powers Boothe called Into the Homeland that was very good that probably 98% of posters never heard of.
Powers Boothe? Made me think of Southern Comfort. It's like Deliverance except with an army squad as the victims.
