Was just looking at the Toronto/Texas arglebargle.

Looked to me like Bautista's slide was pretty s.o.p. for breaking up the double play. How did you see that?

Not Zap and not a fan of either team but I did play alot of baseball and imho, the Rangers way overreacted. They were mad at Bautista from last years playoff home run bat flip but didn't throw at the guy until his most likely last at bat against them for the year. Additionally his slide really wasn't out of line, hard slide but no spikes up and first the guy tried to take his head off with the throw and then clocked him with his fist. As a side note, I definitely give credit to the Ranger player for throwing as good a head shot as you will see on Showbox anytime. Great leverage on short shot and Bautista had a good chin to take the shot.

A little late but it wasn't a tough slide at all. I've had guys come after me spikes belt high way off the bag.

MLB changed the rule this year because of those pansy Mets whining after Utley's slide in the playoffs..... I thought the new rule was to slide TO the bag BEFORE the bag. Could be wrong though.

Bautista didn't start his slide until he was on the bag. Not saying he was right or wrong, but after the bat flip last year, he had it coming at some point.

(yes, I'm just busting chops about the Mets.)

Had never heard the term "argle-bargle" before - assumed it might be a variant of "argy-bargy" which I knew primarily from its use as the title of arguably Squeeze's (English band) best album, from 1980. Is argle-bargle more common in New Zealand? Learn something new every day...

What about the "phantom" tagging of 2nd base on DP's (the ball comes near the bag and the SS or 2nd baseman pivots / throws to first....without touching the bag)?
This is about as BS a non call as the NBA in defining "what's a foul"?

I don't quite get the connection, but agree, I never liked the 2B or SS getting that call.

Haha, that's exactly what I got out of this post, too. I'm a baseball fan, but couldn't care less about a Toronto-Texas game, but argle-bargle (and argy-bargy, for that matter) - that's memorable. I'll be using that one in the future.

Amazing how different the English language is by location. I communicate with Australians regularly, and any time it's more than a single sentence text, there's some phrase I have to Google or Urban Dictionary.

The connection is "Interpretation of Rules". Sliding into 2nd base has been amended. In the old days throwing the ball sidearm at the runners head was a good deterrent.

As for my question....it likewise applies to RULES/ their application.

Like the 1.5 seconds that were stolen from us vs St. John's with NO REVIEW. Where is the NCAA? Where was the Big East or whatever league it was that we were in ABC?
It is in inequality / randomness of the interpretation / application of rules that leads me to believe that Big Money, prestige or other agendas influence umpires to act one way
despite the rules calling for a different outcome.

And that's not "part of the game"....it BS!

Don't know Bautista from anyone else, but hasn't he had issues with sliding in the past? This slide, however, was not too bad. Nice shot by Odor. Basebrawl ain't what it used to be.

Pansy Mets? Please. I was hoping and waiting for someone to drill that d-bag Utley when they played the Dodgers. This warranted more than a 2 game suspension.

Wow, Odor is a real POS scumbag and deserves whatever suspension he gets. That slide was nothing - by today's standards or any other.

Hahaha... Bautista did not expect to get cracked like that. Most baseball fights are shoving and name calling. That was a pretty quick trigger, but I guess a lifetime with the name Odor gives you a chip on your shoulder.

Slide wasn't nearly as bad as Utley's. At least Bats was over the base. He just went in late and hard, doing his job to prevent the double play. Next time maybe he should stop a 2/3 of the way and veer off toward the grass, or how just making automatic outs and ghost runners. Baseball players are so full of sh*t these days. It's called competing.

Ok class.....

Compare and contrast the slides of Bautista vs. Utley. And NO they're not both the same!

If Utley (Whatever team he plays for) slides, runs or walks into 2nd base vs Tx, Odor should deliver
a right / a left....for all 2nd basemen, everywhere!

That slide was expected in my day, I feel it's absolutely fine....I'm probably out of touch though.
Unwritten rule when I played, don't mess with Venezuelans...I kid you not

I've heard the same rule applies to the Chileans

Actually, heard argue-bargle in US. Kiwis use argy-bargy. If it is less intense, it's a kerfuffle, or a furore (few ROAR ay).

I feel like yesterday was more about Bautista's bat flip then it was the slide. If it was about the slide than Odor is truly an asshat since he injured two players and himself last year with slides into second when he was a baserunner that were all way worse than Bautista's slide. For example there's this one were he slides much later than Bautista and intentionaly spikes the 2B with both feet, injuring him. He also had this one where he again was no where near the bag and came in spikes up, but the SS avoided him and he actually hurt himself So if he was really that mad at Bautista over that slightly late slide with his spikes down, then he might just be the biggest asshole in the game.

Ordor's slide against the Angels was a dirty play. He was way late & didn't need to have his spikes up.

Your job is to break up the DP,

Good finds pops, I agree...can't imagine he took offense to the slide.
Most players I ever played with do not take exception to something they do themselves, it's obvious Odor plays hard.
We had a guy named Phil Garner, his nickname was "scrap iron" He'd knock you into next week running the bases.
When a guy hit him hard or late, he'd yell "that's the way your supposed to play this game, bring it on" than he'd pat the runner on the ass and say "keep playing hard"

Zap, really liked Garner. Played the game hard & the old fashioned way. He was a Buc when you were there, right? Picked up the Bucs as my team after the Dodgers left Brooklyn.

Eight-game suspension for Odor. Thoughts?

Sounds about right to me - enough time to make a statement without going overboard, imo.
