OT: Jets fire HC Saleh

If I was a Jets fan, I wouldn't mind it - it shows they're serious and going for it. This has to be their year. 5 games in and they've looked like crap - listless and undisciplined. Way too much talent on that team to be 2-3. They're lucky Will Levis plays football like it's a 7 on 7 pick-up game. Saleh was 18-33 through 3 seasons in NY. Rodgers getting hurt last year bought Saleh a trial this season. Couldn't afford a subpar start.
I hear you. But wasn't the defense more of Saleh's thing? The D hasn't been the problem. Rodgers and his OC are. So, I'm not sure what this solves.

He Saleh is a Muslim with Lebanese descent. On the CE Board a thread was started about the Lebanese Flag being on his jacket. The Jets are owned by major corporation J@J. Read the tea leaves, he was fired for his public display. Look at pop culture, he is not the first. I expect a lawsuit from him.

The jacket could have been part of NFL's "diversity" operation where players and coaches wear ancestral symbols. I believe Pacheco was wearing PR stuff. The Jets were playing in London where there are no doubt a lot of brahs from Leb.

Saleh never seemed particularly religious in any way. His brother was in WTC on 9-11

"Saleh's brother David was in the South Tower during the September 11 attacks in New York City in 2001 and saw the fireball from the initial plane's impact on the North Tower from the building's 61st floor. After ignoring calls by the public intercom within the South Tower to return to their offices, he made it down to the 24th floor before the second plane hit, this time around 50 floors above in his tower. He safely made it to the lobby and was able to escape to safety. Saleh credits this in providing the spark for him to pursue his dreams of coaching football." Wiki

"Across Weeks 7 and 8 of the 2023 season, over 330 players and coaches will return to the field wearing international flag decals -- with players adding flags to their helmets and coaches wearing patches on jackets -- to represent the ever-growing pool of various nationalities and cultures that make up the League."

Bill Belichick also displayed a flag on his clothing a few times. Can't remember which one though. I think the CE Board may be reading too much into this beyond the Rodgers/Saleh relationship.

The Jets finally have a pretty good team - a playoff contender - and they fire the coach five games into the season. I know it makes no sense - It’s just a Jets’ thing.

Saleh was fired because he didn’t win enough games. He was certainly on the hot seat entering the season and the Jets needed to get off to a good start. I thought there was a chance he could be fired relatively soon based on the way the team has looked. HCs in the NFL often get fired after 2 or 3 years if they don’t show significant progress. Both Schiano and Rhule got fired after 2 years. Saleh was all about football regarding his job, he is certainly entitled to his personal beliefs and opinions.

I can't believe I'm going to jump into this, but here goes.

Saleh is being scapegoated. The guy was hamstrung at every turn with his QBs. First you had the Zach Wilson fiasco and now Rodgers is running the team. Saleh was in a no-win situation. As far as his ability as a head coach, I honestly don't think you can arrive at any concrete conclusion based on the absolute circus that the franchise has been. The Jets have many, many issues right now and Saleh was not nearly close to the top of the list.

The jacket was all over media because Mideast was blowing-up at same time and Lebanon was in the center of the mix. Some were taking it as anti-Israel which is easy take with most Ivy League colleges taking that stance

Things were already on the rocks and only got worse with the cadence fiasco. If they were winning or at least showing a pulse this year, Woody doesn't care what's on his jacket. You silly CE guys...

He came in at a bad time with Darnold being traded and Gase fiasco preceding him. Drafting the turkey from BYU didn't help. I liked Saleh from hearing him on WFAN but I did think he was another DC who was closer to Rex Ryan's offensive skills than Andy Reid's. I think Rogers saw that too, and Rogers has never been shy about giving his coaches the stink eye

Bill B. had the Croatian flag on his clothing and I always wondered what prompted him to start doing that after coaching for so many years w/out it. Didn't realize it was an NFL thing.

I remember him being interviewed about it somewhere. I will try to find it and share the link. Edit: his dad was Croatian: Bill B and Croatia

Why isn't the GM fired? Haven't had a winning QB since Sanchez

Pretty much spot on. Joe Douglass is in his 6th season. During this term the team is 29-59, never had a winning record and will be on his 3rd Head Coach. He got rid of Sam Darnold (only to see him turn his career around), drafted Zach Wilson and then proceeded to let a 40 year old Aaron Rodgers essentially be the de facto GM.

Correct, that said there is a very important faction that saw it and hated it. The Jets are far from the worse team in the NFL, not to mention we rarely see in year firings, especially this early, because the capable candidates have jobs. So in Liu of nothing claring on the field, I believe this is it. He wouldn't be the first fired for this reason.

Rogers is the GM, he had Hackett brought in as the OC, brought in players and likely influenced the firing of the Head Coach. Jets being run like an NBA team where a player has more power than the coach.
That's the other thing - wasn't Lazard hand-picked by Rodgers? Guy is terrible.

Oh great- you know they are going to steal Schiano from us

Haha doubtful.
We weren't a good enough job in the Big East or AAC but now in the Big Ten we're good enough for HC Schiano.
He said himself recently it wasn't actually the allure of the NFL like many said.
He was running from Rutgers because we weren't in a good enough situation for him as a Big East/AAC team.

It was all about the platform. Some people forget that Schiano actually was an NFL assistant. He wasn't exactly blinded by the NFL's allure.

then, why wasnt he at practice today and left a couple of recruits hanging waiting to meet with him.

Expect an announcement before our game on Saturday

Nothing to worry about there is no pro team or
college that wants anything to do with him, remember. the last time he was hired the fans went crazy and stopped it.
college teams would absolutely want him. pro teams know he does not want to go to nfl. never did actually .

One of the things he likes about this opportunity is that he would have to move again. The biggest issue for us is that we just lost our AD and not sure that will help us in our search for someone to replace him. I don't think any coach on our current staff would be qualified again.
