OT: Just had an earthquake

Somebody on our Township Facebook posted this as kind of a joke.

So I decided to pull out the real thing (day 3 of honeymoon). Purchased on way out of town from a guy in a gas station spot. His picture selling them was part of the Time Mag Feature (have that too).

My parents were in San Francisco on a trip when the earthquake hit. Power was out for days and I think we finally got in touch with then 3 days later. They brought back us each one of those I survived the quake shirts. I still have mine, It's white with neon orange and black lettering. Alas, it no longer fits.

On a side note I just read that Gov. Murphy sent home State workers at 3 pm last Friday for safety reasons. LOL. The MVC offices closed at 3. What a shame all the peeps that made appointments to get registration , licenses, titles and the like to be turned away or told to leave,

The 1st Quake I ever experienced was while watching the Dodgers and Reds play at Dodger Stadium in the 70's but that was a minor shaker. The LA people I was with didn't bat an eye.

As for here, I guess the reaction was because even a 4.8 is so unusual. Hadn't happened in over a dozen years iirc. Add to that the 10's of millions that felt it and all the media and you have your answer.

Or perhaps we just don't have enough Md/Cal bad dudes to keep everyone in line.

I completely forgot about AB putting water into beer cans for distribution. Wish I had grabbed one of those. (if I tried to put my shirt on it would rips in half faster than the San Andrea's fault line).

More like 250 years. 1783 was the last NJ epicentered earthquake that was stronger.

If I saw correctly that was the biggest little quake out here based in NJ in 234 years. Nothing nearly close to it and even the one aftershock was top 10. It's pretty much already in everyone's rearview mirror already.

More like 250 years. 1783 was the last NJ epicentered earthquake that was stronger.

The one in 2011 wasn't centered in NJ but was 5.2. I was at ground level instead of 3 floors up. That one shook here about as much as I remember. Maybe the memory is a bit off.

Well there are plenty of those erupting in Iceland, maybe we could borrow one.

I was less than 20 miles from the epicenter of that just north of Charlottesville in Ruckersville. That shook for a while, then we had 2 major aftershocks in the evening.

It’s not the wimpiness factor. It is the over dramatic claims several astute posters made on here. God forbid we really have a disaster.it was similar to the actors reporting on the eclipse from other areas which by the way was great if you lived outside this region. For the young people it was a great experience . It was like watching the actors on the weather channel…

Just felt another smaller aftershock in Morris County area. Interestingly I went to see if tracked online yet and saw that NJ has had 42 Quakes in the past 7 days - Mostly Centered around Whitehouse - Gladstone area.

Those countries in the “ring of fire “ are always susceptible. In contrast much of the East coast is highly likely to have a large earthquake at some point. If that happens it will cause mass hysteria and destruction of property as well as people being killed.

We have had a couple of hail storms over the years in the Ny/NJ area- I remember one, years ago, that I barely got my car in the garage before marble size hail came down damaging a bunch of cars in the neighborhood....oh damn, I forgot, we are not allowed to share our experiences here in this area because some posters were in hailstorms somewhere and saw hail like the one's in the picture, so, our little marbles are like us being little scared crying babies that bother a couple of posters so much. lol

We get roughly 20,000 earthquakes per year here in New Zealand, but most of them are fairly small and sufficiently deep to not be a problem. Depth is a real issue for earthquakes. The one that hit Christchurch so badly was "only" a 6.3, but it was close to ChCh and very shallow. That was 2011 and parts are still not recovered, although overall, ChCh has made a remarkable comeback. Was up there a couple months ago and was amazed at how much the city had improved.

I've been here since 2005 and have really felt about a dozen quakes. They vary from serious swaying motions to feeling like a truck just hit your house. Worst one for me was one in Wellington (where they are looking for the really big one) when I was on the 13th floor of a building. Lasted about 20 seconds and a real amount of swaying.
