While the Mets have struggled against both the Bucs and Cubs they are about even with the Cards at 3-4. Not to mention that the Cubs have a bunch of pups. No telling how they will respond under the glare of the postseason.

How many chances is O'Flaherty going to get? I understand he was lights out in 2011, but he has a 12 ERA (not a typo) with the Mets. Wouldn't this be a good time to audition someone else for a middle relief job??
Big spot in Nats-Padres game a short time ago. Nats were down 4 but had crept within one on a bases loaded single by Harper. Next batter up was Escobar and the crowd was going crazy as the count grew to 3-0. Swinging 3-0 Escobar hit into an inning ending DP. Still two innings to go but what a big spot.

When you are up 6-0 you have to be able to use the rest of your bullpen. Only way to figure out if these guys can contribute is to give them a shot. You can ask the same guy to pitch every game. I am sure TC did not want to use Clippard or Familia tonight but you can't get on him for using O'Flaherty and Torres and hope that they can do their job. I think Verrett is available starting tomorrow and Robles should be good after a night off. September will allow for a couple more arms to get a shot. 6.5 is a beautiful number right now. Niese against Harang tomorrow.
Yeah, if you can't put Flaherty on the mound up 6-0 in the 8th, you will never use him as more than a lefty specialist. That's really what he should be, but no issue trying to get an inning out of him tonight.

My guess is Matz comes back into the rotation for the Labor Day weekend and the Mets go to a 6 man rotation for rest of season. I don't see him as a game 2 starter in the playoffs. Probably game 4. In a 5 game first round you'd probably see:

Niese will be in the rotation. He's been the most consistently effective starter on the staff since June. No he's not the flashiest, but a soft-throwing left-hander is the perfect fit for the Big Three flamethrowers.

Thor is still learning. He has gotten hit hard quite a few times. He will lock in next year and be even better.
So why not let him learn Game 2 at Citi and let Harvey silence the away crowd? I'd rather not let a kid learn how not to get shelled in a playoff game. He can learn next year. This year is this year.
Colon will not be in the pen. He'll either be in the rotation or off the playoff roster. More likely the latter.
Way too early to lose confidence in Thor. He's the youngest out of the four and he's still a thrower instead of a pitcher. Once he learns how to pitch, he'll be just as good as the others.
