OT: LSU Fires Les Miles

Well Petrino did a little more than that. He got his mistress a 'job' in the Athletics Department. You could argue the infidelity was on his own time and his own personal affairs. The job thing was misappropriation of funds etc. But I get your point. No matter what, what Briles did was a bigger deal.

Fair enough!

Over the years LSU tightened up their recruiting standards which is why LSU, not Les Miles lost a step or two. They had a legit shot at Eddie Lacy but they turned him down where Alabama found a way to recruit Lacy.

They also didn't exactly need to sure up the running back position. Had a solid stable with Michael Ford commited so other positions were a priority. He wouldn't have been able to do much either because the O-Line was pretty bad. Meanwhile, Bama could have put a dude in a wheelchair at RB and he would look like a world beater behind their incredible O-Line.

Also Eddie Lacy is dumb as bricks. His GPA when being recruited was a 2.0 and even then that number was highly suspect.

LSU and standards...I laugh because it's funny!

For a high profile program he actually ran a fairly tight ship. He threw off a Heisman trophy candidate in the preseason for breaking team rules and continually hanging around JJ which was only going to get him in trouble.

I wouldn't laud the guy for discipline as he is known for letting the team vote on a punishment

You could laugh and probably rightfully so, but in the SEC a slight change in recruiting standards can send you from a NC caliber team to a bottom dweller struggling to beat Cuse in a matter of 3 or 4 years. Don't believe me look at what Donna Shalala (sp) did to Miami.

Don't think ND cans Kelly. They tend to let coaches hang around a year or so before canning them. Weis and Whittingham were held on to long after their expiration dates

My guess is Les ends up in a Power 5 program with a natural recruiting base that's struggling. I think he stays away from USC due to the administration there being dysfunctional at best

A few things. One, they did not hold onto Willingham too long. They fired him after 3 years. In fact, the media fried ND for firing Willingham too soon claiming that maybe there were some racist undertones there because they didn't give Willingham enough time to get his program in place.

Weis was there for 5 years.

And the issue now is possible tension between the AD and Kelly. The rumor is that Kelly refused to fire their DC so the AD had to force him to do it. If that's true, situations where the AD and head coach suddenly don't see eye to eye usually don't turn out well. I'd say it's 50/50 at this point if Kelly is back in 2017. Kelly, himself, realizing he just had a power play pulled on him by the AD could even look for another job knowing the writing is on the wall.
