OT: Mac McClung

Umm....do we remember what happened during his mac’s offical visit ?

A kid named Paul Mulchay was on campus for like his third unofficial in 6 weeks that he knew played point guard that the staff was extremely high on and making a super high priority in the following class

That played a significant role in his decomitment fron Rutgers ... as the wheels for getting PM was spinning super fast even at that point ...

Can’t blame the kid...wish him well...but we got the player that the staff really really wanted

No remorse on his de-commitment from me at this point. As long as we are making progress toward building a winning team it is easy to move on. MM has skills that were evident during the Illinois game. He is not playing PG because they have another freshman who looks like even a better player. He did show the ability to make a good pass but will need to improve his outside shot because as others have said, teams will learn quickly about his strengths and weaknesses.

Methinks you can put that theory to sleep, unless he and Mulcahy didn't get a long.

McClung committed to Georgetown and then five months later James Akinjo, who the Hoyas staff was very high on, made him a priority, and plays point guard committed to Georgetown in the same class as McClung. Yet, McClung didn't de-commit from Georgetown.

I think the staff wanted McClung AND wanted Mulcahy in the next class.

Honestly, I think Georgetown just REALLY wanted McClung. They wanted him so badly that they tried talking him into reclassifying into the 2017 class. Perhaps they kept recruiting the kid even after McClung verbally committed to Rutgers. I'm not accusing GU of anything, but McClung comes to RU for the Madness event and then he reopens his recruitment. Less than two weeks later he commits to Georgetown.

I doubt the de-commitment from RU was a sudden decision. Most likely was never solid to RU and the de-commitment was in the works for a while.

Agree with Russ sentiment.

I am happy with Mulcahy and our current core. Decommits happen, G-Town seemed like somewhere he really wanted to be. So be it. No need to lose sleep over it. He will be a solid 4 year player.

No way - I really like what Pike is doing with RU basketball but McClung is the real deal. Amazing athlete.
So your contention is that Ewing's next class won't be stronger than this years? That he won't continue to develop his connections? And if they put some wins together, they won't be attracting top 100 talent on a regular basis? He is a great athlete no doubt...just not a great ball player.

Who knows how good or bad the kid will be. We'll see whether Ewing and staff can develop kids and whether Mac wants to put in the time to be more of a player than a dunker.

The same thing that we have tried to caution people about our roster... you can't make definitive predictions about a kid's career or ceiling based on 2 college games as a freshman.

McClung is a Trump like distraction tactic.......no one is focussing on Laurent and Foreman and their plights (?) to the NCAA tournament

McClung can flat out shoot the rock. The kid is s diaper dandy and soon to be prime time player. No doubt about it. Ru misssed out on this kid. He is a high flyer.

The kid is only a freshman and is starting on a solid team in a good league. He should be a very good player and if his outside shot develops can be better than that. For whatever reason, we lost him. We will lose others along the way. I will follow the kid and I wish him well. He would bring noteriety to the program and I wish we had him but we need to move on. If Pikiell keeps finding under the radar kids like Johnson, Eugene, Harper(early), and Baker, we’ll be fine. Let’s beat St. John’s.

That's literally a completely made up story. Didn't happen. And McClung is a good player. Mulcahy is a good player and Pike is a good coach but we missed a good one. But you can't win them all.

Russ

Like your stuff a lot...just know that I posted this right after after Mac decimmited last fall on this forum. And I wanted Mac

I would float something like this out there for fun...I have a decent track record

Guy is obviosuly a national name in college basketball 10 days into his freshman season - PSU DePaul broadcast starting hyping him for two minutes after a white guy from DePaul didn’t finish at the rim. He’s gonna be one of those guys that feels like he played 6 seasons.

PM has nothing to do with his decommitment, nor did Shaq Carter, contrary to popular belief. I heard he bailed after his visit because he didn’t gel with the players. RU was looking to move away from “look at me” players and I heard Mac was brought down to earth by a few players.

That would be great if true.....and we need to schedule Georgetown at home.

We are 2-0, have a big game tonight and people post this garbage. How about some love for the guys that actually came to the team?

McClung played a bit out of control today BUT he did hit his first three-pointer. I don't know if he was injured or if Coach Ewing just benched him, but McClung only played 4 minutes of the second half and zero minutes in OT (Hoyas defeated USF by 3). The main thing I noticed while he was out of the game was that Georgetown's offense looked a whole lot better. Like, a different team better.

But you can definitely see McClung's upside.

McClung took an out of control 3 from the corner after receiving a bad pass. He didn't play much after that. The kid has quickness and jumping out of the gym athleticism but needs to develop a perimeter shot or teams will be able to shut down his move to the rim

This is the most believable explanation I have heard to date.

Why else would he decommit so soon after his official visit?
Something had to happen on the visit for either McClung or the team to realize this isn’t a good fit.

  • Great night for him, but the jury is still out on McClung. He benefits from playing with a superstar freshman in his backcourt.

We lost out this kid is doing a really good job and Georgetown is fine Academic school. It’s a beautiful area of DC and really hard to get into. Anyone that says anything else is just sour grapes. We could have definitely used this kid tonight.

Our 'fans' suck

Why keep posting this crap?

What's next? A summary of Tim Thomas' college career? Dahntay Jones' NBA stats?

Jezus fkng Christ...let it go already and support your damn program.

Yeah big loss. Time to move on though. I think people probably would have if some of the “old guard” didn’t belittle people who criticized it and were condescending as they tried to explain it away.

He had a really good game, I'll give it up to him. That said, he's still a guy without a position. He's certainly not a point guard, and he's too short to ever be a shooting guard. Looks like a good college player though.

Looking at raw numbers and a lot I don't like PLUS didn't we just go through three years with a lot of drama with an individual player. I don't know if Pike wanted to go trough another 4 years of that.

I hate the way we have played the past 2 games and I have serious doubts about our talent, but our guys are easy to root for.

For the 9th time....he is not a PG and is playing SG for GTown...if he's better than Baker and Mathis, it's then a miss.....if he's better than McConnell Young and Mulcahy, then it's a miss. I am not trading McClung's production at SG for Mathis or Baker.

We can list every recruit with interest and offers and I'm quite sure everyone is scoring or playing well....unfortunately there's only 1 basketball and players need the playing time to produce. He's not Mathis defensively at SG and he's not Geo at PG. If you want to argue he's better than Peter Kiss, knock yourselves out.

No one else is capable of playing McClung at SG except GTown and if they had better options at SG, that player would be playing ahead of McClung.....nice playerx athletic and competes.....but is not a "miss" unless you are trading Mcclung for Mathis, Baker or Mulcahy, which no sane RU fan would do.

He would be better than Peter Kiss IMO but that's as far as it would go in RUs backcourt. If he ran the PG spot and was averaging 5 assists and shooting 35% from 3, we would have an actual discussion about whether McClung projects better at PG than Mulcahy next year.
