OT: Mac McClung

We lost out this kid is doing a really good job and Georgetown is fine Academic school. It’s a beautiful area of DC and really hard to get into. Anyone that says anything else is just sour grapes. We could have definitely used this kid tonight.
Umm, I don’t think anyone was talking smack about the Academics of Georgetown...

A lot of people’s feelings writing off a guy who can score 20+ points against ranked teams saying is no big deal even though we’re one of the worst offenses in the country. Smh. Whatever can’t change it now.

We have tons of guys that can score and have scored 20+ against ranked teams. That is only relevant when you have an A game.

So many people dwell on top 10 and bottom 10 percent games here. The essence of what a player is what he does in the middle 80%.

I agree!!! The kid visited and didn't want to come. He is from Roanoke and wanted to be closer to home. It is what it is. Let it go already.

FIG this is a very @NewJerseyHawk post. I would love for us to have a bunch of guys on our team who can go for 20+ every 7 or so games. Then we’d actually be a good team! Cmon now.

We’ve only had 4 instances of 20+ point scorers both by Geo and Eugene against the likes of Boston U and E Mich Etc....

The obsession with a guy who wanted nothing to do with us, once he found a better home, is ****ing scary. You guys need to find something better to do with your time.

I think the problem is because half the people here think it was a big miss and half think it wasn't at all. I'm in the former group, not that it matters. I'm sure we'll have another big miss and we'll forget about him.

I don’t consider this kid a “miss,” however. I consider him a kid we were never going to get who used us so duck him IMHO. Kinda like Jonathan Taylor. He was just waiting for the Wisconsin offer and once it came he was gone.

If we had tons of guys who could score at that level, this program would be winning a lot more games .

For the 9th time....he is not a PG and is playing SG for GTown...if he's better than Baker and Mathis, it's then a miss.....if he's better than McConnell Young and Mulcahy, then it's a miss. I am not trading McClung's production at SG for Mathis or Baker.

We can list every recruit with interest and offers and I'm quite sure everyone is scoring or playing well....unfortunately there's only 1 basketball and players need the playing time to produce. He's not Mathis defensively at SG and he's not Geo at PG. If you want to argue he's better than Peter Kiss, knock yourselves out.

No one else is capable of playing McClung at SG except GTown and if they had better options at SG, that player would be playing ahead of McClung.....nice playerx athletic and competes.....but is not a "miss" unless you are trading Mcclung for Mathis, Baker or Mulcahy, which no sane RU fan would do.

He would be better than Peter Kiss IMO but that's as far as it would go in RUs backcourt. If he ran the PG spot and was averaging 5 assists and shooting 35% from 3, we would have an actual discussion about whether McClung projects better at PG than Mulcahy next year.
He can play on this team and in this league. Im watching him vs st johns today. Its water under the bridge but kid can play the point too. Hes a player

Watching the game today too. He can get to the rim better than anyone we have other than maybe Geo. Can hit the three, and is solid from midrange too. Understand it’s beating a dead horse but I would love to have gotten him.

Happy with our guys too but man it would be nice to have a kid (that fits a need) go for 20+ and beat good teams and have a video on house of highlights that gets nearly a million views. Great PR for Gtown.

Just saw the highlights of the St John's game. Macclung is a baller and boy could Rutgers use his shooting. He's exactly the type of player we need in next year's class. But can't blame him for going to Georgetown. Just wondering, besides Rutgers , which other Power 5 schools were heavy after the kid?

People who were excited we landed him as a player were told we needed “decaf”.

Why would we need that type of production? What was his high score this year? I thought he was a mid major recruit.
He would have similar production to McConnell cause that's the role he would fill on this team. You people who think pikiell would let this kid do whatever he wanted and get the ball as much as he is fed at Georgetown are crazy.

This discussion is interesting because it just reinforces the need for shooters .Recruits change their mind all the time and for Rutgers fans its upsetting .I agree its time to move on but not to forget the importance of attracting go to shooters .In the past Rutgers has shown a preference for recruiting slasher type players versus outside shooters. That decision might have been caused by recruits interested in playing for Rutgers.Bottom line Rutgers needs to find a way to improve scoring by at least 6 points a game in order to defeat teams that Rutgers can't match baskets with for 40 minutes.

McClung is a good player....but let's rewind the tape a bit.

No major offers, evaluated by Russ Wood as a SG. RU offers....fans here either complain that he's not that good because he's got no other offers and Pike is going to really need to get Top 150 talent to build the roster.

RU lands Harper and Mathis, both eventually ranked in Top 150 nationally. McClung is ranked in the 300s.

McClung decommits, RU continues to grind, lands a better player in Jacob Young who is also like McClung....an undersized scoring guard, that's better suited off the ball....Young out of HS, also was a Top 150 recruit.....and staff lands underrated McConnell and one of the top guards in the state in Mulcahy.

McClung, who all Power 5 schools passed on, goes to GTown to play SG, which is where the experts evaluated him at. And GTown luckily lands James Akinjo, a Top 100 PG after UConn fires Kevin Ollie.

McClung has high scoring games, RU fans call McClung a "recruiting miss", when same fans claim, RU needs to continue to recruit at "Mathis/Harper level", but should have landed a recruit, that no one else truly recruited at a high level.

We can't call McClung a miss, when he doesn't play PG and everyone else either missed on him or has decided that they can't play him at SG, because they have better SGs and better players who actually play defense.

This during the middle of what is a small (or decent) step forward, springing 2 straight upsets in the B1G, probably wiggling the way out of what some of the same fans claimed was going to be a 1-19 B1G record, after losing to Northwestern.

If there's no Mulcahy, who balled out last night and RU was 0-9 in the B1G, I would understand the hype of a "miss".

But after 2 straight B1G wins in school limited and very ugly B1G tenure, RU is 48 hours or so from a potential unheard of 3 game B1G winning streak.

McClung scoring a lot of points against St John's isn't surprising...everyone seems to score a lot against the Johnnies.

I am happy the staff can identify talent, so if we are going to complain about missing out on the recruit only RU truly recruited, ranked in the 300s, that's not a PG, enjoy the conversation.

I'm ubee confident in what I saw last night in Mulcahy, in what's there with Jacob Young and Caleb McConnell and where RU is trending overall.

Hawk, Very nice summary and update on McClung. You are always a man of reason. If we had him some of our dedicated guards who believe in RU might not be as happy to be here. I want guys that want to play for RU. The kid wanted to be closer to his home. Good luck to him.

Mc Clung is a high energy player with lots of skills. Saw the Georgetown-SJU game, and he was the star. Some nice passes, and he is a shooter. He is very short, and couldn't get a line on his defense. But he is very quick, and fearless. He fires up the team with his energy. To say Jacob Young is a better player than Mc Clung--just not so. Would have been nice to have him here--he would have been the crowd's favorite almost immediately. But as Lefty Dreisell used to say, a player's verbaling to a school kicks off the real recruiting battle for the player.

Seems like people want fault him for reneging on his verbal, and the staff for letting it happen. Happens all the time, just as more than 10% of college players transfer. More than one player per B1G team transferred out in 2018, and that does not include grad transfers. To trash a player for reneging on a verbal or transferring out as disloyal is unfair, but that's what us fans do.

Would anyone on here be brain damaged enough to take McClung instead of mulcahy..that's what I wanna know

Sorry, Monk--used to watch Georgetown lots because I lived and worked in the DC-Md area, and before the advent of a zillion games on cable, you got a lot of Georgetown, Md and GW games. There was the occasional white player on Georgetown. You can probably verify it for yourself by checking the internet. JT, in later life, was a sports talk show guy on one of the DC stations. Was back in the area some ten years ago when a friend's daughter got married, and caught the show. He was surprisingly genial and positive.

highlights are like facebook....you are only seeing what is good.

Maybe he is a guy we ultimately regret not having here (not that it matters). i definitely think it way too early to make any assessments.

Does he defend?
Is he a good teammate?
Can he shoot?
Does his game have too much variability?

Going to get killed by 80% for this one........Corey won 7 B1G games in his 3 years here. He had enormous talent, but in my eyes he was a guy that I think net net that didn't move the program forward.

Just like Rutgers got it right with an under-the-radar player in Geo and Eugene and Myles, they got it right with Mac. He would have been a nice player here. But he didn't care that we offered first and instead went to Georgetown. No reason to be mad at the staff here for "missing" on him. No reason to be mad at him for going with a program he felt more comfortable with.

Credit the staff for adjusting and getting Jacob Young instead, getting basically the same type of combo guard player...we just have to wait a year to get him on the court. So we take a hit this year but get a big jolt next year.

I don't get why this thread continues. Why don't we have threads for Alvarado at GTech or the Martin brothers at Nevada, or Strickland at Wisconsin? Move on.

I think i posted before......I believe Mathis signed right after McClung signed. Would Mathis be here if it wasn't for us getting the verbal from McClung

I doubt McClung entered his mind once when making his decision..that's ridiculous.
