OT- Matawan QB transfers to St Joes Montvale

Hmmm, ride your skateboard to one option or a not so long car ride to the other but instead go the rough part of the GSP 5 days a week. Interesting.

From the article...

St. Joe's coach Augie Hoffmann said Pearson moved in with his mother, who wants him to be educated in "a Catholic environment."

The coach's mom or the kid? Maybe Pearson's mom lives up there?

Interesting this that since the current, soph starting QB at Joes is a good QB, the Matawan kid may ride the bench besides riding the GSP.

That's a long commute.
Yet, after another example of a kid abandoning his home town public school and showing a willingness to travel a long distance to what is considered a better program (like so many at the Catholic schools do) , there are many people on this board who think RU should focus their efforts on recruiting these parochial kids as if they will be swayed to RU by some mythical pride in New Jersey.

2 kids from Monmouth County going to school in Bergen County, Bergen Catholic and St.Joes. It is one thing to commute to St. Peters Prep via the train from Monmouth County but with no public transportation options this is not going to be easy on the family. I know of families that carpool to Seton Hall Prep from the Allenhurst area but I do not think there are many carpooling options to Montvale.

RBC is a good football school, and SJV is good too, but if football is first priority, I think you travel north. Didn't Savon Huggins commute from Jackson to Jersey City?

Yes, you are right, Huggins did commute (sometimes in Coach Hansen's truck) Jackson to JC. When was the last time St Joes Montvale had a QB get a D1 schollie ? edit - St John Vianney QB Anthony Brown had numerous D1 offers and picked Boston College

SJV almost closed this year too. They rallied donors, and they are good for another year.

In the article the mom says she's looking for a Catholic education, yet Red Bank Catholic and St John Vianney is not far from Matawan.

When she said "a catholic education" she was saying more $$$$.
RBC and SJV do have a great catholic education in their own back yard.
And you all question Jersey Pride! Well this is the foundation of Home pride= take care of my self first and "F" my home town "F" my local parish, and "F" my home state, I COME FIRST
Yes indeed JERESY PRIDE is taught at home at an early age.
Corruption, hypocrisy and selfishness= all the foundations of "Jersey pride"

SJV is near his home and last years starting QB is going to Boston College. Sounds like it would have been a good fit.

I didn't realize his hometown public school owned him. Maybe he is doing what he thinks is best for him and his future. Is that not ok?

Minkah Fitzpatrick did the same thing from Old Bridge. I know some people are a little unsettled that Sitkowski might do the same thing.

This is really all about the northern parochials recruiting athletes from outside of their typical catchment area. It's a practice that needs to be shut down.

Horse feathers. He is being sold a bill of goods. Where did his uncle go to school? Perfect example of an athlete who succeeded at a public school, not a magnet school for athletes.

It's been going on for years. The first one I heard of was Ryan Grant who went on to play for the Packers. I forget where he was from buf it was at least an hour from Ramsey.

With all the stud recruits at St Joe's this year, we shall see if St Joe's is back to being the heavy pro-RU school it once was.

Hoffman is their head coach. You would have to think Boston College will always be a factor with him as their head coach.

I wish Karcich was still there....

What gives you the right to question her motives? It is her son.if it becomes a burden for he or the family they will go to option 2. He led his school to the group 2 crown as a freshman. He comes from royal football bloodlines..From the little I have heard he is a good kid. Whether mommy is doing it for the Pope or a big future payday it is her right to do so. I just hope it works out for her son.. I wish that we played for our towns and our state college but in this state anyway we no longer do .Sad but it is what it is.

I'm totally with you that it's getting out of hand and hell will freeze over before my kid doesn't attend our local public...but what are you saying, that there's a certain radius that it's OK to recruit within? So if a kid in your town goes to RBC, for example, it's OK, but if they go to one of the patochials in Bergen, that's not OK?

I know you've mentioned numerous times that your daughters didn't go to Manalapan High and I've seen you refer to it as a "zoo."

George Pearson was never going to spend four years at Matawan and their coaching staff was well aware of it.

I don't know that there are any hard boundaries to be drawn but there are excursions beyond the realm of common sense. As has been pointed out already, the kid lives in Matawan. SJV is literally within walking distance. RBC is a 15 minute ride. And, also mentioned, SJV has a pretty decent football program which sends at least one kid a year to an FBS program.

All the schools "recruit" athletes. The northern parochials recruit from all over the state. They do it because they can - there are enough affluent alumni to "sponsor" kids, both financially and domestically. It would be easy enough, I think, to put some sensible limits on the practice.

We'll see. Karcich and Hoffman are buds. Karcich was also a Cuse grad, but it didn't stop him from sending kids to Rutgers. So here's hoping the Hoffman/BC connection is minimized.

to retort my earlier post I could care less where the kid goes to school but do not fool yourself. it is the CORRUPTION I hate. Like RU4Real states two excellent Catholic educations are in arms' reach. So why waste hundreds of hours and hundreds in $ for gas for a "Catholic" education.
JUST be honest My boy is going to St. Joes for the money we pocket and the exposure the kid will get.
PS there is no exposure advantage as the kid has offers already and everyone in the country knows this kid already IT FRACK'IN MONEY under the table and that is the SIN!.

Interesting, hadn't heard that. Which non-publics are trying to scoop him up? I feel bad for the head coach if that happens - he's a good guy and a Rutgers grad.

Agreed. I think it's just the normal chatter but you never know what these privates are offering. I think he'll end up staying which will be good for Old Bridge to finally have a FBS athlete again.

Of all the well known NJ parochial coaches, Karcich was the most RU-friendly. Hopefully his influence rubs off on Hoffman. St. Joes has always produced quality D1 players and Lord knows we need to have some semblance of a pipeline to the north NJ parochials.

Recruiting is really a sales job, and successful selling boils down to reach and frequency. Ash and Co. have to find some degree of success inside the state of NJ. These are the kids they can readily stay in front of and get on campus as often as it takes to obtain their LOI.

I gotta hand it to these kids today. Transferring to play for schools like St. Joe's, Don Bosco, Bergen Catholic and Paramus Catholic.

They know how to get the attention of the Michigan coaching staff.

Hoffman has been offered jobs at BC on multiple occasions and does handsomely ($) for himself via BC summer camps. Hoffman, too, bailed on his local high school (Park Ridge) to play for a parochial even though he didn't need parochial ball to get a college scholarship and NFL cup of coffee. Well-known power lifter and athlete in his youth. Rutgers is an afterthought to Hoffman.

How many coaches visited Matawan last season? I'd bet almost ever school in the country had some presence at SJ last season. The northern Parochials have second and third string kids getting full rides

This is true, which is why I have my doubts about Hoffman giving Rutgers a fair chance. Time will tell if Ash/Co. can convince him that Rutgers is a good destination for his top kids.

So ridiculous. Didn't RU's own Jay Bellamy as well as Charlie Rodgers get to the NFL playing for Matawan?
That was then and this is now. Sports have changed and it's starting to get crazy with kids younger and younger. Everyone wants to get a leg up.
