2 good QBs will fight it out.

The Matawan kid is Drew Pearson's nephewInteresting this that since the current, soph starting QB at Joes is a good QB, the Matawan kid may ride the bench besides riding the GSP.

Yet, after another example of a kid abandoning his home town public school and showing a willingness to travel a long distance to what is considered a better program (like so many at the Catholic schools do) , there are many people on this board who think RU should focus their efforts on recruiting these parochial kids as if they will be swayed to RU by some mythical pride in New Jersey. That's a long commute.
2 kids from Monmouth County going to school in Bergen County, Bergen Catholic and St.Joes. It is one thing to commute to St. Peters Prep via the train from Monmouth County but with no public transportation options this is not going to be easy on the family. I know of families that carpool to Seton Hall Prep from the Allenhurst area but I do not think there are many carpooling options to Montvale. That's a long commute.
Which is what I meant by skateboard/short car ride comment. In the article the mom says she's looking for a Catholic education, yet Red Bank Catholic and St John Vianney are not far from Matawan.
RBC is a good football school, and SJV is good too, but if football is first priority, I think you travel north. Didn't Savon Huggins commute from Jackson to Jersey City?In the article the mom says she's looking for a Catholic education, yet Red Bank Catholic and St John Vianney is not far from Matawan.

SJV almost closed this year too. They rallied donors, and they are good for another year.Yes, you are right, Huggins did commute (sometimes in Coach Hansen's truck) Jackson to JC. When was the last time St Joes Montvale had a QB get a D1 schollie ? edit - St John Vianney QB Anthony Brown had numerous D1 offers and picked Boston College
SJV is nowhere near being at risk to close. Mater Dei was the school you are referring.SJV almost closed this year too. They rallied donors, and they are good for another year.
You are correct, my bad.SJV is nowhere near being at risk to close. Mater Dei was the school you are referring.

I didn't realize his hometown public school owned him. Maybe he is doing what he thinks is best for him and his future. Horse feathers. He is being sold a bill of goods. Where did his uncle go to school? Perfect example of an athlete who succeeded at a public school, not a magnet school for athletes.I didn't realize his hometown public school owned him. With all the stud recruits at St Joe's this year, we shall see if St Joe's is back to being the heavy pro-RU school it once was.
Minkah Fitzpatrick did the same thing from Old Bridge. I know some people are a little unsettled that Sitkowski might do the same thing.
This is really all about the northern parochials recruiting athletes from outside of their typical catchment area. It's a practice that needs to be shut down.
George Pearson was never going to spend four years at Matawan and their coaching staff was well aware of it.
I'm totally with you that it's getting out of hand and hell will freeze over before my kid doesn't attend our local public...but what are you saying, that there's a certain radius that it's OK to recruit within? So if a kid in your town goes to RBC, for example, it's OK, but if they go to one of the patochials in Bergen, that's not OK?
I know you've mentioned numerous times that your daughters didn't go to Manalapan High and I've seen you refer to it as a "zoo."
Hoffman is their head coach. You would have to think Boston College will always be a factor with him as their head coach.
I wish Karcich was still there....
I don't know that there are any hard boundaries to be drawn but there are excursions beyond the realm of common sense. As has been pointed out already, the kid lives in Matawan. SJV is literally within walking distance. RBC is a 15 minute ride. And, also mentioned, SJV has a pretty decent football program which sends at least one kid a year to an FBS program.
All the schools "recruit" athletes. The northern parochials recruit from all over the state. They do it because they can - there are enough affluent alumni to "sponsor" kids, both financially and domestically. It would be easy enough, I think, to put some sensible limits on the practice.
Interesting, hadn't heard that. Which non-publics are trying to scoop him up? I feel bad for the head coach if that happens - he's a good guy and a Rutgers grad.
We'll see. Karcich and Hoffman are buds. Karcich was also a Cuse grad, but it didn't stop him from sending kids to Rutgers. So here's hoping the Hoffman/BC connection is minimized.
Hoffman has been offered jobs at BC on multiple occasions and does handsomely ($) for himself via BC summer camps. Hoffman, too, bailed on his local high school (Park Ridge) to play for a parochial even though he didn't need parochial ball to get a college scholarship and NFL cup of coffee. Well-known power lifter and athlete in his youth. Rutgers is an afterthought to Hoffman. We'll see. Karcich and Hoffman are buds. How many coaches visited Matawan last season? I'd bet almost ever school in the country had some presence at SJ last season. That was then and this is now. Sports have changed and it's starting to get crazy with kids younger and younger. Everyone wants to get a leg up.So ridiculous. Didn't RU's own Jay Bellamy as well as Charlie Rodgers get to the NFL playing for Matawan?
