OT: Memphis coach search - Gregg Marshall note

Very good point about Self and Kansas.

I guess part of the appeal with Memphis is the underdog role. It seems that Marshall embraces that role and could find the transition difficult based on how he coaches.
Self is staying. It will be hard to top KU in College and he would not want the $hit associated with the NBA. He preaches a team first mentality that just does not correlate. KU just picked up a huge 5* tonight.

Self isn't going anywhere.

Kevin Ollie would be a guy IMO who will take a hard look at the NBA .

Played in the league-----has won a National Championship------can make much bigger coin in NBA than he's making now.

Reading about Memphis's search for Josh Pastner's replacement. Saw this note ...

Marshall, who took Wichita State to the Final Four in 2013, is making a cool $3 million now. His pay is scheduled to jump $3.5 million in two years. He is the King of Wichita – don’t laugh – and the basketball program does things in a first-class way.

Yes, that means charters and not commercial flights. Charters for recruiting. Charters whenever Marshall says he needs a charter.

Marshall is making serious money. Does Rutgers hoops (or other Big Ten hoops teams) fly charter flights for away games and charter flights for recruiting? You have to guess that Paterson, NJ's and Wichita State's Markis McDuffie would be impressed by charter flights for recruiting and road trips. And that's even before practice facilities and packed-house home games.

McDuffie would have been more impressed with the fact that players get better under Marshall at Wichita State. He hasn't always gotten 5 star HS talent there.

What top jobs? My guess would be Louisville, as I don't see him going to a school where basketball isn't priority #1. However I don't see a North Carolina or Duke hiring him. My point is if he can make a ton of money and have all the resources in the world at Wichita State he can have those at Memphis.

If he thinks he can continue his success at WSU he will stay, but if he thinks he's topped out there, Memphis makes a lot of sense IMO.

and if he can do that at Wichita State than why go to Memphis where he will face immediate pressure to win. He will get a Wichita anything they can throw at him at Memphis..is it a greater visibility job...maybe because its a step up in conference level and tv exposure but he can go to a power 5 job if he wants visibility. I dont see where Memphis makes anymore sense than going to a NC State type program

I think he would be much better off to stay at Wichita State. If he would want to leave for a much bigger job I'm quite certain that a really good P5 job will open up within the next few years.

What are these better P5 top jobs? No one seems to want to answer that question.
IMO, given his personality he is not going to coach at a school with big time football. Wichita State has all the resources that Memphis can offer, but it doesn't have the fertile recruiting ground. It is much easier to get kids to play @ Memphis than Wichita. That to me is the biggest difference, more so than the conference or TV deal (although those are somewhat intertwined).

Louisville, Indiana and Kansas are three P5 programs I think he would be his fit and worth the move (although given his stature at WSU, Kansas would be a difficult move). Duke and UNC won't go outside of their families for a new coach and I don't see him going to the west coast. or up north.

Here are starters ...
  • 1973 Memphis hoops lost in the NCAA final game to UCLA.
  • 26 appearances (years) in NCAA hoops tournament.
  • Recently their head football coach was hired away by Va Tech.
  • FedEx thinks enough of them that it affiliates themselves with Memphis athletics
I believe FedEx is based in Memphis and their main hub is there. So Memphis is their local team so to speak.

Sort of like Johnson & Johnson headquartered in New Brunswick ... except that Rutgers has never had a similar affiliation.

It's exactly like that. And as far as Johnson & Johnson goes, somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but to the best of my knowledge, they've never had the naming rights to any sports facility. FedEx, on the other hand, also has FedEx Field where the Washington Redskins play. So it might be more a matter of the different marketing strategies that the two companies have chosen. I'm not saying Memphis isn't a good basketball school, just that having the FedEx name on their court isn't as big an indication of such because of their close proximity, as opposed to if the two were halfway across the country from each other.

The Grizzlies are number one in Memphis these days. The FedEx Forum is the Grizzlies arena not the University. It's like saying Seton Hall has Prudentials name on their court. FedEx is very supportive of all things in the Memphis area but I wouldn't classify them as overwhelming U of Memphis boosters.

why wouldnt he coach a school with big time football, you are just throwing that out there...Shaka Smart went to Texas, Marshall will find a similar job when it opens and the time is right. Point is that going to Memphis doesnt really offer much more except more pressure to win immediately that he does not have at Wichita State. He can wait for the more glamorous job thats better than Memphis

Shaka Smart isn't Gregg Marshall. Remember Marshall turned down Alabama. Does that mean he would turn down Ohio State or Michogan too? Memphis is a better draw than WIchita State for top recruits, there is no debating that. I would love for him to stay a WSU and continue to do well and make another Final Four. My opinion is that he would go to Memphis before NC State or similar P5 team and if he think it's time to leave WSU he'll go to Memphis. If he doesn't think it's time, then that's good for me.

Now watch next year NC State can Gottfried and hire Marshall.

Alabama isnt a good basketball program. Texas, Michigan, Ohio State are.

Tubby Smith reportedly targeted by Memphis-----would be a great fit IMO.

maybe AD Hobbs can finally nurture a great relationship with J & J. I like the sound of the Johnson and Johnson Athletic Center and Sports Performance Facility - arena and practice center.

maybe use his political connections in Trenton to get J & J some favorably treatment in the state in return for increased support for Rutgers......lol

A "Kentucky" article calls the Memphis hire of Tubby a bad fit. The article includes this note ...

While the city of Memphis is considered a bountiful source of basketball talent, recruiting there requires a coach willing and able to navigate a — how should we put this? — complicated recruiting environment (the University of Memphis has vacated six NCAA Tournament appearances, after all).

Pretty odd seeing a Kentucky-focused article commenting on a "complicated recruiting environment". This is a program that years ago delivered cash to recruits and their families via (now Memphis-friendly) FedEx.

Seems pretty clear that Kentucky knows all about "complicated recruiting environments" since they've had their own issues and grabbed Calipari out of Memphis for just those skills. Maybe they know Tubby can't handle those complicated pay to play games because of his brief time at UK.

Memphis is getting a guy that has won a National Championship and taken 5 schools dancing.

Only 2 others have pulled that off.

They did pretty well IMO.

I'll take the media seriously in the Commonwealth when they call for Pitino to be fired.

Yeah I'm not criticizing Tubby or Memphis. I think it's a good hire. It's more of a shot at Kentucky and their press basically acknowledging that Calipari is dirty as we all know.

Tubby must be trying to catch Larry Brown for number of head coaching jobs. I think he has him on the collegiate level but not with the NBA overlay. A true hired gun nomad.
