OT: Rutgers University has the highest graduate student debt of all public U.S. institutions

Does it mean avg debt of a student graduating or total debt of students graduating?

If it is total, this statistic is not that accurate because schools like RU with huge graduating classes would have higher numbers.

This makes sense to me.

First, we have some of the highest in state tuition for a public.

Second, we are relatively poor as R1 universities go and therefore have less financial aid money to go around.

Good question.

It would be interesting if this statistic is more related to Students from NJ (going to RU and elsewhere) or it is related to students going to rutgers.

I would guess that in NJ, it is more difficult to save for college than in many states given the high cost of living.

I bet you could change the headline to "NJ students among the highest student debt of any state in the nation" and still be accurate.
