You may not love her but at 34 is still kicking ass at Wimbledon
Ties Steffi Graff. Now if we could just get an American man in the mix?

She was serving at 124 mph. Safe to say faster then some men on the tour. Felt bad for Kerber. She gave it all she could. Great finals match

Serena is a great tennis player performing in a era when womens tennis is weak .There is no Graff,Seles,Navaritola and Evert.

She's the best ever. Won the last match with power. Kerner was overwhelmed with Serena's serve, especially at the end!

Serena used to be pretty girl. Then she hit the juice and turned into Ray Lewis with long hair and regular temper tantrums. Not that she's alone. Women's tennis is full of chemikals

Serena is awesome, but until she has the clear title number, she isn't the best ever. Right now, I would have to give it to Graf. She played stiffer competition, was a better athlete, and had a booming game from the forehand side and serve. With today's equipment, she would have been monster too.

Steffi at number 1 for 377 consecutive weeks is the most man or woman. Serena's longest stretch was 260. That can't be overlooked.

Most impressive about Serena is her longevity and ability to come back from injury. Certainly there are rumours, but unless they are found to be true, they aren't.

But, whoever has the most majors is the best, just as Fed is now.

This train is never late.

Early on in her career when she struggled, I always told my friends she would be better than her sister. She's even better than I thought. In my mind she is the best ever. She would blow away Graf and I was a huge Graf fan. The game now is so different.

Steffi Graf (in her prime) >>>>> Serena (in her prime)

Steffi will always be the best...

agree. There is a total lack of consistency at the top in this era as opposed to the 70s and 80s. Once Henin, Davenport, Hingis, Clijsters retired the womens top 10 were basically a mishmosh every year of new players have a year or two at most of consistent solid play.

Nothing will match the Evert-Navratilova era and rivalry in terms of contrasts of style. Who has been Serena's rival? But without a doubt with 24 GS you have to tip your racket to Serena for her dominace and longevity. Its unfortunate that Venus has been derailed by injuries and illness because I always preferred her over Serena.

124 mile an hour serve. That would have reduced Martina and Chris to tears.

Chrissie was so strong mentally she just would have waited until Serena self destructed and she would. Certainly Chris didnt have the power..as it showed when steroid Martina and Graf came along but on occasion even as she aged she was still able to pull out some victories against both

You know what is amazing....I didnt know that Steffi and Serena actually played each other...back in 98/99..each won one time against each other. She amazingly also played Seles.

Here are Serena's records against top players of the past

Steffi Graf 1-1
Monica Seles 4-1
Arancha Sanchez Vicario 3-4..the only player i believe Serena has a losing mark against
Martina Hingis 7-6
Justine Henin 8-6
Venus Williams 16-11
Jennifer Capriati 10-7
Lindsey Davenport 10-4
Kim Clijsters 7-2
Amelio Maursemo 10-2
Victoria Azerenka 17-4 probably the most consistent threat the past few years
Maria Sharapova 19-2...total dominance
Caroline Wozniaki 10-1 the last 3 marks say it all, the last 5-7 years in womens tennis have not been strong at all

Serena is unbelievably dominant. The only player who would consistently compete with her was Henin and her career didn't last very long. She had the speed, power and touch to straight up beat her. It was awesome watching them play each other. Women's tennis has been awful since Henin and a few others like Muresmo, Clijsters and Davenport retired. The women's field is full of mental midgets who Serena just dominates.

Steffi did play versus Martina and evert. Better players in my opinion.
They were old by then. Martina was still good but Evert was essentially done by the mid-80's. I was a huge Evert fan but no way she could compete physically with today's players.

Or maybe she could if she was playing in this era? It's all water under the bridge, but if you want to go by career grand slams which you can ACTUALLY quantity, Serena will be the
best ever by the time she hangs em up.

Still think women's tennis is not good now. Evert was done but also Seles was there too and she is in the Hall of Fame.

If Seles hadn't been stabbed, Graf might not have made it past 20 slams

What happened to Seles was just horrible. I did not realize she won I think 10 major titles.

She had won 8 of 11 slams when it occurred and only 1 3 years afterwards .... graf won the 4 slams after teh stabbing - #'s 12-15 for her

Cali, Was Graff slipping when she retired or was she still winning?

She started getting the injury bug. I know her hamstrings started to really take a toll on her game.

She was just a phenomenal athlete though. Legend has it she was at some sort of Olympic training center and decide to test herself in the 400. It's said her time would have had her on the podium if she did that in the Olympic games.

Had Seles not been stabbed, I think she and Steffi would have ended up around the same major total...18ish or so. Seles was utterly dominant.

Agree Serena's competition has been weaker in recent years, but her longevity is incredible. She also has the Tiger Woods factor of beating her opponents on intimidation and her dominance.

Stop this bullsit, you would not have said this if Kerber won.

You do realize that is a dude playing against women...a perfunctory Google search will confirm the point.

Sorry - to break the news to you.

Don't feel bad so is Jennifer Aniston ....the fingers don't lie...it"s all about the middle and index finger and enjoy!

yeah thats why while Graf was such a dominant player at one time, you might have to take away as many as 5 of her Slams and give them to a healthy Seles. Seles was starting to dominate tennis herself at the time of the stabbing. Graf also retired young at 30 so perhaps she could have picked up a few more but alot of tennis people including Evert believe that Seles would have been considered one of the all time greats if the stabbing didnt happen

I think Graf starting playing professionally when she was 14..have to check on that, I can remember as a kid them talking about this German phenom. I think Evert won the first 5-6 matches they played and then it was all Steffi the rest of the way through the mid to late 80s

In looking at some of the old stats and results its amazing how many names I recognize from back in the day of womens and mens tennis. The women especially had so many Americans..what the heck happened. Seems like the Williams' rise didnt actually create a new rennaissence for US youth in tennis

Serena is the greatest of all time, in my opinion.

American men's tennis will be down for a very long time I think.

Steffi Graf was retired at around 30. She won a lot more in a shorter period of time. Who knows how many titles she would've won had she continued playing. And mens' tennis is on a relative upswing. Some good talent coming up the ranks.

Usually, women's tennis players are way past their primes in their 30s. That's what makes Serena's dominance at this age a great accomplishment . She keeps it up and she can be in her late 30s winning majors. Longevity counts towards greatness .
I do think the women's talent pool is lacking, but you can't blame Serena for that . And men's tennis can we please get a decent American !

I sure hope you're right. Been hearing this since Roddick/Blake era. I'm not as confident as you, but I'll be glad to be proven wrong.
