stadium from the upper west side of Manhattan?
Also , is there any taxi service?
Any suggested places to eat nearby?

thanks

You are in luck! Take the NJ Transit Northeast Corridor line from Pennsylvania Station in NYC at/near Madison Square Garden to the New Brunswick train station. On game day, there are shuttles. It is a couple mile walk up College Ave and over the Landing Lane bridge to the stadium if you like to walk.

Eat-come to a tailgate!
If you are talking well before the game, get a stromboli at Stuff Yer Face. If you want fancier fare, advise.

Take uber if you're doing taxi. From the westside, take the A train downtown to 34th street/ Penn Station. From there take the NJ Transit northeast corridor line to New Brunswick. From there you can get a bus to the stadium.

From the upper west side, you can take a taxi or subway to Pennsylvania Station. The train is about 45 minutes from Penn Station to New Brunswick.

Train is super easy. About a 40 minute ride and it's nice cause you can get few beers in Penn Station and brown bag it for the ride.

You can also uber it. 40ish minutes as well, so the uber would probably run like $60-70

Getting from NYC to Rutgers Stadium is easy. As others have said, take an NJ Transit train from NY Penn Station to New Brunswick, and either walk the mile and a half, or take a free shuttle bus (or hit some of the bars on Easton Ave in New Brunswick and then catch a free campus bus from the Student Center to the Stadium).

Getting back to NYC after the game is the hard part. With an 8 pm start, you probably won't get out of the Stadium until about midnight, and there will probably be lines for the shuttle buses back to the train station. (If you are up to the mile and a half walk, that is probably the way to go. Just follow the crowds of students across the bridge into New Brunswick and walk up College Ave to the train station). The last train from NB to NYC is at 1:30. If you miss it, you have to wait 4 hours until the first train the following morning at 5:30.

Definitely TRAIN from NYC to New Brunswick. Driving/Uber has too many variables. New Brunswick has one of the best restaurant scenes in NJ. Are you looking for collegiate, fine dining, steak, pub? Enjoy

The train is by far the best way to get to New Brunswick from NYC. An uber might not be terrible as well but it's going to be pricier. From the train station, it's a walkable distance to the stadium but there are shuttles leaving from in front of the student center pretty much all day so there's no need to walk and yes there is a taxi station right next to the train station.

I would say if you're coming early, check out Old Queens campus which is right near the train station and then hang out at a bar downtown before you come to tailgate. There are plenty to choose from. Harvest Moon Brewery, Tumulty's, Clydz, The Old Bay are all pretty decent bars to hang out before the game. There are many more. There is also a good handful of nice upscale places if you want to spend the money. If you want something more student oriented and cheap check out The Olive Branch. Olde Queens Tavern, Knight Club and Golden Rail don't really serve food; they're mostly for students to get cheap drinks. Then come to tailgate! Our tailgating is pretty solid and night games are usually very fun!

There are plenty of solid restaurants and bars in New Brunswick but if you want something uniquely Rutgers go to Stuff Yer Face either before or after the game. It was founded by Mario Batali and offers some pretty awesome and one of a kind food. The strombolis, Potachoes and Fish Bowls are what they are known for but I'd also recommend their pierogies as an appetizer because they're insanely good.

The line for the shuttles back to campus after the games are usually awful so many elect to walk back after the game. It's a little over a mile back to the train station but trains still run to NYC pretty late.

I hope you guys enjoy your trip. The trip from NYC really is pretty easy. Princeton is also only a single stop passed New Brunswick if you want to check the school and town out.

thanks all.
WOw, I just checked Uber: $129 one way from Upper West Side

Seems fair. If lucky that is 3 hours out of his day, there and back to pick up fares in his uber stomping ground. Tolls up the wazoo. Train it. And if you can walk 1.5 miles or so (as a New Yorker that should be a breeze) , consider walking from the train station if it is a great day... make stops at bars or see the College Avenue Campus on your walk. The most historic part of Rutgers is right across from the train station/tracks..

Batali WORKED at SYF, he didn't "found" it...

That walk is a hump post game. It's certainly doable, but after a marathon day like you're talking about, walking from the stadium to the train station is going to seem like the Bataan Death March. I would try and make that your Plan B.

As mentioned, DON'T MISS THE LAST TRAIN. lol

As everybody says, take the train.
NJ Transit web site
Some Hints:
When you get to Penn Station look for the NJ Transit Waiting Area. This is separate from the Amtrak or LIRR areas.
You are looking for the Northeast Corridor Line. The destination listed will be "Trenton". The overhead signs will announce the departures. At the gate a sign will list all station stops and you can confirm your train is stopping in New Brunswick.
Buy a ticket before you board from the Vending Machines in the Waiting area. It is $14 each way. If you buy on the train they add a $5 surcharge. Buy both tickets in NY Penn Station. You don't want to deal with buying a ticket at the New Brunswick train station at midnight.
On the way back note that there is a Newark Penn Station. With the PA announcements it might sound like New York, but don't get off. Stay on until the last station, Manhattan/NY Penn Station.

train advise as above.

game day food/atmosphere: wander through the tailgate lots. you'll find most of us are friendly and will offer you food and drink. (well I know my tailgate would)

the walkway between the Blue and Yellow Lots is filled with food trucks of all varieties (BBQ, grilled corn, Tacos) and there is also the famous Grease Truck where you can get the infamous Fat Daryl, as seen on every food show in America . the truck is located just outside the entrance to the Blue Lot.

I'm surprised you think that walk is that bad. I've never really found it that terrible (although I usually park at the CA parking deck, so there is probably an extra half a mile after that.)

Personally, I don't think it's that bad. However, I would hesitate to recommend it as a Plan A to a visitor here. It's not around the corner, that's for sure. And if you've been on the go and on your feet for the better part of 12 hours, it's a bit of a hump.

I've never found the wait for shuttles to be bad after the game. I've never had to wait more than just a couple of minutes, in fact. But then again, I haven't used the shuttle after a sell-out night game, and maybe that's worse. Trains back to NYC are also infrequent late weekend nights, so the trip home may be long. Uber rates to/from NYC are insane (they have to account for tolls, congestion), and a weekend night there will be surge pricing multipliers. I can't imagine it being worthwhile, even if it saves you some time on the way home.

On your way down, I recommend planning to get to New Brunswick around mid-afternoon and spend some time walking around the College Ave campus, getting eats in NB, and then shuttling over to the stadium to hang around the Block R party and/or other tailgates on that side of the stadium. I always like to find my seats in the stadium well before kickoff and take in the pregame show, but most RU fans are at their tailgates until kickoff.
