Dino Babers - Syracuse (Ohio Valley & MAC HC) Success
Justin Fuente, Virginia Tech (AAC HC) – Meh, trending down
Bronco Mendenhall, Virginia (MW & Independent HC) – Success
Matt Campbell, Iowa State (MAC HC) - Success

Barry Odom, Missouri (SEC DC) – OK, trending up?
Kirby Smart, Georgia (DC SEC) - Success
Chris Ash, Rutgers (Big Ten DC) – Dumpster Fire
D.J. Durkin, Maryland (Big Ten DC) – Incomplete record, fired for off the field issues.

Lovie Smith, Illinois (NFL HC) – Jury still out, needs to show something this year. Likely failed.

Will Muschamp, South Carolina (SEC HC) – OKish
Mark Richt, Miami (SEC HC) Left Miami – OK to meh (for Miami)
Ed Orgeron, LSU (SEC/Pac-12 HC) – Success

Very limited sample set, but the best ratio of success some from lower level coaches who moved up... Maybe. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There's probably a strong correlation between the perception of each program and the new hires' success rate. You get the keys to Georgia or LSU and its easier to recruit have success. The keys to Rutgers or Illinois, not so much.

Tom....that's exactly right, so it doesn't matter how much we pay or who our coach is, our true ceiling isn't near where many fans think it is. We compete with the lesser B10 programs for bowl eligibilty. We don't compete wth the top of our division for top bowls and NCs.

Our goal is to beat Indiana and Maryland most years. You don't see IU, Purdue or Wake Forest spending big on coaches because they recognize the folly of that.

Three of the teams that were the biggest dumpster fires at the time (MD, SU, Virginia) wound up in pretty good spots by the time 2019 rolled around (though MD took a strange path).

This is a useful post and thread. That's the kind of thing that can help set expectations. I don't think there are any sure things.. so we need to aim lower and keep the option to pull the trigger on replacement should the hire not immediately show progress.

Most major programs with money can wait to only hire proven commodities.. even though they may not work out (still too early to call Chip Kelly a failure at UCLA but that's the idea). Ed Ogeron at LSU got a lot of grief early. GS here got a lot of grief early on.

But these good hires you see.. probably would have been good hires 5 years earlier when they were at a much lower level. That's where I think we need to aim (if we don't go to GS)... find the Chip Kelly before Oregon was ready to hire him. It CAN be done.. you just need to start looking.

Lovie has brought in a lot of talent recently, in 2 years they will look like Maryland today
