He needs to be discussed and he needs to figure it out.

1. His slash line is horrendous. This is a guy that’s supposed to be a leader on the court. There is absolutely no reason he should be getting the time he is relative to the production he’s putting out.

35 minutes. 6 points. 7 boards (good). 3 assists. 2/8 shooting. 2 TOs.

2. Yes only 2 TOs, but 1 of them cost RU the game. If it were Simpson, he gets a pass for being young. Paul has been around the block, this isn’t new to him. You’re a senior. You CANNOT turn the ball over in that situation. Putrid.

3. This is Pike related. Your team just came back from a 19 point deficit with Paul on the bench and Simpson carrying you there. It is absolutely inexcusable that Simpson only got 12 minutes last night and you leaned on Paul to carry the workload with that slash line he put out.

I understand the loyalty, but this is past a loyalty issue. This is not putting your team in the best position to succeed, and ultimately that’s your job as HC.

2 TO's is kind because he literally cost us 3 of our 4 30 second violations by not shooting or passing to someone with 2 seconds left on the clock; He has open shots passes them up and then either has a way more difficult shot or makes a late pass its just poor basketball and he beside Mag being out has been the main cause of our slide we have to let Derrick play more Paul can't break anyone down and to add to that he gets beat on defense all the time because he is either ball watching or trying to double example the late putback by Minn last night was his man he is just watching the ball and poof his man goes by him for the easy put back

I don't know what to say about Paul...I genuinely don't understand what's going on with him...

he's playing so out of character, that it has to be an injury...no?

either way, I agree that Simpson should get some of his minutes. I actually think Steve tried to tee that up yesterday...but Simpson didn't exactly embrace the oppty yesterday either.

in short, and in general, I do agree that pike shit the bed yesterday...he didnt seem to have a good feel for the game...and went with his stock rotations which I think really hurt us.

If he’s going to pout and whine and not be aggressive he needs to ride the pine. The attitude hurts the entire teams energy.

The great thing about sports , is that you live to fight another day. I am not ready to count mulchahy out . The whole narrative changes if he plays solid against northwestern and we get the W.
I think this can be very similar to geo in 21. He was taking a lot of heat heading into the tournament and that all changed with big plays against Clemson . But then we had the houston strip ….

NW also coming off a devastating loss, though perhaps not quite as agonizing. Sunday should be interesting.

Mulcahey's been terrible for several games now. Needs to sit. Problem then is that Simpson is too cocky & many times doesn't know how to play under control. Think you still need to give Simpson more minutes.

The two turnovers couldn’t have come at a worse time. Gave Minnesota two extra possessions in the last minute. If he doesn’t turn the ball over there, that’s two more trips to the free throw line. Even if we miss every one of those free throws, that’s more time off the clock where Minnesota needs to bring the ball up the floor and get a shot up.

The cross court pass is inexcusable. There was still plenty of time to get the ball across half court, and we had a timeout in our pocket. Just a complete lack of situational awareness.

Paul and Caleb have been major contributors to Rutgers success in recent years.This season,however,their performance especially on offense has shown a downward spiral.There are far too many unforced turnovers and games with low number of points scored.These problems might be caused by injuries .What we do know is that they are playing around 30 minutes a game and the bench players have also been inconsistent in performances.

Don’t know why we needed a separate thread for this. He’s being discussed in pretty much every thread and it seems pretty unanimous that we need more production and/or more Simpson.

Hoping he doesn’t look at the boards at all prior to Sunday’s game. Just need a win and then we can figure out next year later.

Stop hating on the players. This is on Coaching. If you don't believe someone is playing to your expectations than a message must be sent until something changes. His minutes should be reduced in favor of Simpson at this stage and that is on Pike.
Without PM we DO NOT win at MSU...frankly we don't win a lot of game without him. he is just in a bad slump a this stage with some very unfortunate luck too.

In the past 3 weeks the best half of basketball that Rutgers played was the 2nd half of Penn State when Paul was on the bench in foul trouble/fouled out. I'm fully convinced Rutgers loses that game if Paul is on the court

a lot of that is true...coaches have to balance winning with pampering players, loyalty, etc. for the future, including recruiting. And that balance favors pampering ahead of winning, but they hope to win anyway. Is why we feed Cliff so much despite the futility of it (although it worked yesterday for the first time in a conference game).

Pike rolled the dice that we'd win anyway, but unfortunately by the time Paul shit the bed it was too late for Simpson. In hindsight, he would have played Simpson more I am sure. Sunday will be interesting. I think Paul gets the lion's share of PT again, unfortunately.
 
I have to think that he is injured to some degree (most likely his early season shoulder injury) which is not causing irreversible harm but limits his ability to shoot and perhaps other aspects of his play if he is in pain. That’s the only way I can explain his tentativeness to shoot. We will probably hear about it post-season if he requires some procedure or surgery.

Most players are injured to some degree. I don’t know that it makes sense for us to use the argument that he was impacted by the initial shoulder injury, except for the good games he had, but now is impacted by the subsequent injury because he’s having some bad games again.

His shooting percentage has dropped every year here. Maybe that’s driving the tentative shooting along with just looking for his spots more?

Could be as simple as you say. This is his first year (in the post Geo/Ron era) where he has assumed the role of one of the team leaders so maybe that plays into it. Perhaps he has put too much pressure on himself this year with the expectations to perform and lead.
If I recall, he did take a really hard fall in the Penn State game.
 
Since MSU he has played like a freshman. Last night late game alone, cross court pass turnover, airball 3, didn’t box out on missed shot that ended up an easy two for MN, gets stuck along baseline and I think a couple more I can’t remember. I have never seen a veteran do a complete 180 like he has. It’s sad to watch and can only imagine what is going through his head.
 
BOski - It most certainly isn't "sad to watch". It's only basketball. He's getting a free education to play a sport and entertain us. There are plenty of things that should matter more than basketball in his life and our lives. Feel sad for the sick, the poor, people suffering war, etc.

There's nothing sad about Paul's play, the team, potentially not making the NCAA, Schiano's $32 million, etc....well, it is sad how much some professions pay while others that society needs more get so paid so little, but that's a story for another day.

Please have mature perspective. No reason to feel sad about #4's poor play.

It’s all relative . In the scheme of life , sports rooting interests matter very little . But in the scheme of sports rooting interests , this is very sad to watch and could be a catastrophic collapse what we are witnessing from Paul and team.

no, sad isnt the right word. neither is catastrophic. with all the real problems on this planet, it’s a game that shouldnt matter a whole lot to fans. root ? discuss ? sure. but it’s nothing more than entertainment for us. people take it too seriously. here and everywhere.

Feel sad for Buckner (RIP) and Bartman for having to face unwarranted fan anger.

It was a terrible pass, but never should have happened if Hyatt had simply dribbled towards the basket with a waiting 2 on 1 with Cliff. Worst case we get fouled with maybe 15 seconds left and make 1 to go up 4 (sure he could've missed both, but let's assume 1 make), instead of MN making it 73-72 with 6 seconds left. A lot harder to come back from 4 with 15 seconds left, obviously.

no, illogical. regardless of hyatt’s play Mulcahy’s blunder was also avoidable. they both screwed up. if either of them made the right play the team wins. can’t blame Hyatt for Mulcahy’s pass.

He also did a flop trying to get a foul that wasn't called that led to an open 3 pointer.

i also had the thought that maybe hes dealing with an undisclosed injury. he just doesnt look right. he was never the guy that would blow by a defender, but he would post his smaller guard defender up and use a slew of post moves to get a decent look. hasnt been doing that at all, and when he does theyve been blocked like 75% of time (or so it seems). between that, some very costly turnovers, and some bad fouls; he looks kind of lost out there. plus when he doesnt commit a foul and turns to ref incredulously i cant imagine that helps him getting calls later on
