I do like Pike a lot but I'm starting to believe that his view of the modern game and overly simplistic player evaluations are going to be his ultimate downfall here.
Talent evaluations ;
1. How many one dimensional players does he bring in ? Players that either can play offense or defense but not both.
2. How many times do we hear before the season how athletic or how well they shoot?
Only to see that guy become a liability
3. How does he not recognise this past off season the need to bring in a couple of bigs that can defend and rebound ?
I'm not talking about a national level center , I'm talking about two 4s that can average a combined 12 pts and 8 rebounds.
4. Why would he bring in 3 guard wing types and an undersized 4 when he literally had in hand 2 of the best scorers in the country and a very good 1,2or 3 in JWill ?
The modern game
1 How could our offensive movement be so limited ?
2. How does he not understand the value of 3 pt shooting ?
3. Why doesn't he understand that having a couple of shooters on the floor opens up a ton of floor space for Dylan and Ace ?
4. Why doesn't he understand they we don't have the players to constantly switch on defense as we no longer have guys that can guard multiple positions?
5. Why don't we have an effective zone we can go to when the matchups are killing us?

I have so many more questions but I can't believe we are blowing the best opportunity to make a national statement that we have had here since the 70s.
Many will say that we didn't have the NIL money to attract the best players but we already had in hand the most difficult types of players to attract.
He had to know that we had two special guys coming in.
We don't need a national level 5, Emmanuel is starting to do enough,
We needed two 4s that could rebound and clean up garbage , that's it .
Maybe we get this turned around or maybe this becomes the biggest tease in the history of RU screws.

He did the best he could with limited NIL resources. It’s not like he didn’t want better players or that better players didn’t want to come here. They’re just not going to come when they get 2-300% more NIL elsewhere.
Disagree, it’s not just about NIL. He proved for the few years before this one that he did poorly in talent evaluation. So many recruiting misses. I think the OP is on to something

No one bats 1000 on these. He’s done well enough with underrated players all throughout his career. Eugene omoruyi had zero p6 offers and Pike made him an nba player. Every team has misses though. Hard to argue that historically, he hasn’t done more with less.

We’ll see this season. This season is more about getting the supporting cast to buy in. Problem is guys like lathan don’t realize they’re the supporting cast and has played selfishly so far.

I don’t know, it’s a LOT of misses. The days of Myles, Young, Geo and RHJ are long gone.

Oskar
Rieber
Jaden Jones
Doucore
Kiss
Agee
Miller
Chol
Simpson
Wolf
Fernandes
Griffiths

I agree asking 1000 is way too much, but come on, the percentage has been poor

He did more with less early in his tenure. Since the 2021 class his recruiting track record is littered with misses

He did an awful job in the portal this offseason and NIL can’t possibly be all to blame. That’s on Pike and his ability to identify and bring aboard scheme fits that can hang with power conference athletes

The naïveté or pure ignorance of the current climate of big time college athletics and what can and can’t be done, and what directly revolves around dollars available is astounding. The current state has seen some very good coaches packing it in rather than deal with it. ( Jay Wright, the Virginia coach and others).

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for RU. (I've been a fan since 1974)
We have two guys on one team that will be drafted in the top ten next year.
You dont mess this up.
Its never going to happen again.
We have generational talent.
There is no reason anymore to bring in big freshman classes unless they can contribute immediately.
As soon as they develop, you have to recruit them again.
Pike brought in 2 kids that can't contribute right now.
He's got 4 committed for next year.
We have to use the portal better.

I totally agree. Instead of bringing in 5 questionable P4 players, use the funds to get 2 higher level players that complement our freshmen studs and incorporate Dortch and Grant into the rotations. I’d rather see a more talented rotation of 8 players then what we are seeing now

Maybe Pike needs to go back to what has worked for him in the past. Unfortunately the game has changed and it takes a lot of money to win with upper classmen who have been in the program the whole time

Eugene Omoruyi was not an NBA player when he left Rutgers. Oregon made him an NBA player. He so much as said so when he said he couldn't believe how much he was learning at Oregon. His "handlers" advised him to leave.

Look at his stats at RU when he left, the steady progression he was making, and what he did Oregon. There was no real improvement at Oregon. It was all Pike.

He does not know how to consistently evaluate talent for the B1G Ten. See laundry list of non-B1G players before this year (Souf, Oskar, Fernandez, Simpson, Woolfolk, etc. etc. etc. etc.).

Also D. Harper, Bailey, Sommerville, R. Harper Jr, Baker, McConnell, M. Johnson, C. Omoruyi, E. Omoruyi, Spencer, Young, Yeboah, Gettys...

I'd like his hit rate to better than it has been, definitely - but he's also gotten a laundry list of B1G level players, too.

Going to be a lot harder to develop players over several years like McConnell, Johnson, E. Omoruyi, Baker, etc. A player has a little success as a freshman or sophomore, and their NIL stock rises, and it becomes harder to retain them to reap the rewards of the development effort put in.

The coffers are not infinite, especially not to retain that secondary talent you need behind stars.... even more especially when that talent is significantly overvalued in the market (e.g., Cliff getting $1-2M offers).

I've been talking about his bad recruiting for 6 years. If he recruit HS players better we would need 4 or 5 players from the portal every year. The problem is the any kid with talent is not going to come play for a coach that preaches defense 1st and don't tell me about Dylan and Ace, that's a once in a life time deal, his recruiting went right back to where it was this year.

Take out Bailey and Harper. They were clearly evident to the most simpleminded of coaches. Only one on that list that pans out in last 2 years is Spencer and Sommerville.

Maybe not but the kid couldn’t even dribble his freshman year. He developed big time at RU. That’s just fact. EO is a dick

In the last 2 years, we've been shopping in the Home Goods section of the portal, not the Saks 5th Avenue section.

I'd have loved to get a Big Ten caliber center from the portal, but we didn't have $1-2M lying around.
