Players “checking out” how much can a coach do?

This question is not only about Pike with Harper/Bailey.

My question is in any sport how much can a coach do to stop this from happening?

In todays days of NIL deals much different then in the “olden” days where if a player is not performing coach
Would sit his a** on the bench
