Disappointed obviously because I thought Rutgers would do better . But now it's time get behind ash and hope we get lucky with this hire . We are due for some good luck .

Very happy. I never would have expected RU to hire a defensive coach who would say his intention is to create a team that plays with fire and violence lol. I mean think about that. RU went from summer camp counselor version of Barney-Ball to the 70s Steelers in just a few weeks. Just gotta find a LB who can growl and take out his dentures

Hey, where is the "Wish it was Golden" option?

Ha!Ha!
Goodness gracious.
I can't believe how many people wanted that clown show.
That would have been our worst nightmare.

My prediction - Ash will be a home run.
Not another guy out there higher on my board.
Small risk - HUGE REWARD (if I'm right)

Hey, where is the "Wish it was Golden" option?

LOL. I'm happy it isn't Golden, Schiano, or Cristobal. I would have been happier with Mullen or Chip Kelly. But is it not like I actually expected them. I am happy with Ash as a solid hire with a lot of upside potential. And since I am a fan of strong defenses, I look forward to watching his teams play. (And since Ash withdrew his name from contention at Syracuse earlier last week, this is just another example where Rutgers outrecruited Cuse because we're just a better destination.)

Disappointed obviously because I thought Rutgers would do better .

What if Rutgers was looking at a bunch of big names but Ash simply impressed the hell out of them during his interview. Maybe he came across as having a desire for the job and a vision that nobody else came close to.

You say "Rutgers could do better" but what does that mean? A bigger name? More experienced head coach?

I was in favor of getting a guy with head coaching experience but I've seen teams go with a guy that impressed during the interview. Sometimes it works out extremely well, sometimes it doesn't. But if you think you may have found the next Meyer, do you wait until he builds up his name and everyone knows he is Meyer ? Or do you grab him and let him become a great coach at RU?

I'm excited to see how he does. He sounds like he might be something special.

I am not upset but I am not really ecstatic either. I am still bothered by his underperforming defense at Arky. He got beat by Flood for goodness sakes. Well, it's still not a terrible hire.

Grant ran a punt back that game. Their D was pretty good.

Very happy. We actually went and got a coach that other schools wanted. I never really expected us to get a Mullen, Richt etc. level of coach so this was the best I was hopping for. A P5 OC or DC that was on a top tier staff, sounds good to me.

Happy for the Ash hire.
Very Happy we didn't get some the rumored guys.
Disappointed it WASN'T Mullen...we could have shown that we meant REAL business about winning.
I'm afraid that with the comments I'm reading...the fan base will still be fractured with the happy folks and the folks that are in the wait and see attitude.

All the recent B1G hires have been coaches with experience. Urban, Harbaugh, Franklin, Chryst, Riley, Beckman, Hazel.

We hired a co-coordinator?

He lost to Kyle Flood.

He has no head coaching experience and no New Jersey ties and no evidence of great recruiter.

Hoping he turns out to be Schiano but boy is this choice risky.

And other than Meyer and Harbaugh, out of that list, I'd take Ash.
You're just another in the multitude of Rutgers negatrons.

Disagree. I'm happy with the hire, but will just take a wait and see attitude before declaring that this was the best hire that Rutgers could possibly have made. Chris Ash appears to have a great resume as a defensive coordinator, no-nonsense attitude and is a student of the game. He has my full support to try and successfully translate his skills/experience to P5 head coaching. I'd say the fanbase, with a few exceptions, is not fractured by this hire.

I voted "Happy". Once it was apparent RU wasn't going to (be able to?) hire one of the home runs (Fuente, Herman, Richt, Mullen), Ash was one of the better options and much better than many of the coaches (Golden, Cristobal) RU was supposedly interested in.

Another Experiment! We'll either blow up the lab, or discover dark matter. Somewhere in between is likely...hopefully closer to the latter.

Ditto! Has my full support but declaring that he is the best hire is just odd. No fractured fan base at all but wait and see is the appropriate response where he has no body of work as a head coach. Two weeks ago was not even mentioned so some fans have to get off their high horses.

Hoping he turns out to be Schiano? Who had no head coaching experience and whose Jersey ties consisted of growing up in a town so far north you never have to ride the Turnpike and one year as a grad assistant? That worked out pretty well.

It we hired Beckman, you'd complain he was only a MAC coach. (Yeah, like the MAC never produced any coaches.)

He lost to Kyle Flood? Big f-ing deal. One game, and we beat Arkansas twice.

And as much as we love Rutgers, we are not a destination hire. Aside from the last two you named, none of that list ever would even consider coming here. Hell, some of them wouldn't even schedule us if it wasn't a conference game. We are nobody's first choice. Or second. Hell, look how many decent jobs go to coordinators.

I think we did damn well to get a coordinator from a program like Ohio State. HE WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR URBAN MEYER TO HIRE. What more do you want?

B1G schools usually don't provide on the job training. Just would have liked a proven track record.

Feeling better today than I was yesterday when I heard the news initially. Honestly I really did not know much about the guy. I wonder how many we actually interviewed for the position. I am sure we talked to several to gauge interest but how many did we interview? I assume we are giving him a contract similar to what Durkin is getting at MD? Budget for the staff will be equally important. I like that he has a diverse background which should help when trying to assemble a staff. I am not an advocate of him keeping anyone from the current staff.

I agree 100% BoroKnight especially the part about being good enough for Urban Meyer.

Besides I imagine we will be paying Ash much less than what we would have paid for a head coach with experience which will make it more affordable and easier to fire him if needed. And if he turns out to be successful coach we will be talking about what a bargain he was.

Good enough for Bill Walsh?

I am happy.
I would have liked Schiano (There was buzz during his tenure) but I have to admit, I was not a fan of his game day coaching.
I want a head coach that is not afraid of change.
I am sure Ash watched Urban Meyer when he changed QB's due to poor play.
At least we know if Rettig was or was not an option next year.

I like the Pro Set offense (I admit i am a dinosaur) but I am aware that college football has changed.
Harbaugh was able to drastically change Michigan his first season.
Lets hope Ash gives the team some "bump" in the level of play.
I can take losing, I can't take getting blown out 4 or 5 times a year.

In the end, Rutgers needed a change.
Embrace change or fall behind.

I'm with you...I'm just in wait mode to see if I upgrade him to "Very Happy" category [cheers]

Happy but hard to say Very Happy since he doesn't have a track record. Not a knock on him though.

Flood had his moments and that Arkansas game was one of them. You can kill Flood all you want but he did well in many games as a coach. You are just being negative and pointing out negatives.

Yeah Arky lost to RU but Ash but did pretty well last year in the NC run. Once agin, you are being negative by only pointing out negatives. Try some balance.

disappointed with his decision to coach OSU in the bowl game. If his paycheck from RU starts Monday, he should ONLY be working for RU Monday. Unless it is understood that it is a part time position until the bowl game ends.
