PISCATAWAY, N.J.
– Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano announced that Kevin MacConnell has joined the program as chief of staff. MacConnell spent more than 25 years in his previous stint with Rutgers Athletics, last serving as the department's deputy director of athletics.

"Kevin will be an integral part of our football program," said Schiano. "He provided great support and leadership for our program in the past and we are excited to welcome Kevin and his family back to Rutgers."

"Rutgers is a special place and I am glad to be back home," said MacConnell. "I appreciate the opportunity that coach Schiano has once again provided me. I have spent 30 years of my life 'On the Banks' and I am excited to work with everyone at Rutgers."

For the past six years, MacConnell helped create and oversaw the Sports Division for Academy Bus, the largest bus provider of collegiate and professional sports teams in the country.

MacConnell has over 35 years of experience in college and professional sports, most recently serving as the director of football operations for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under Schiano. In that role he handled many of the day to day activities for the NFL club and served as the liaison between football and non-football departments. In addition, he managed several elements of Schiano's off-field agenda, including player and staff communications, football and stadium operations, scheduling and personal requests.

Prior to his time in the NFL, MacConnell oversaw various roles at Rutgers, assisting with public and community relations, marketing, promotions, corporate sponsorship, fundraising, ticket sales, event management and operations, team travel, radio and television. In his first post at Rutgers, MacConnell was the director of sports media relations before taking on the role of assistant athletic director of marketing and communications, followed by associate athletic director for external affairs. He was promoted to deputy director of athletics, a role that he held for his final seven years at Rutgers.

MacConnell began his career in the National Basketball Association as assistant public relations director of the New Jersey Nets. From there, he became director of public relations for the USFL's New Jersey Generals before starting his college athletics career as director of media relations for the Atlantic 10 Conference.

MacConnell and his wife, Debbie, have a son, Kevin. He also has a son Brett, who currently serves as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator on the Princeton men's basketball staff.

I wonder if his first assignment would be to get some renderings of ideal football facilities.

Kevin is well known and well liked by long time RU fans and is a great addition to Greg’s staff. He knows how to get things done at RU.

I still remember Kevin walking the sidelines at the RAC before the MBB games with the big walkie talkie in hand.

Welcome back Kevin, a true Rutgers man!

Maybe just Maybe KMac can be the one to fix the ticket office?

Welcome to the guy who will get things done in the athletic department that Greg wants done, but doesn't have the time or desire to do. As I said in the other thread, love KMac - great addition.
That’s what I’m thinking. The heavy.

Based on the role, his ability to develop and maintain a good working relationship with Pat Hobbs will be very important.

Was there ever a chief of staff before or is this a new title and position that GS created?

Can he fix the traffic patterns at the RAC??????

KMac will have responsibility for football only.. His office is located at the football complex not with the other Athletic Administrators. This is a good thing as football needs a lot of attention to recover from the day that he left for the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Great hire. He is a very important piece to our recovery

Kevin will act as a buffer between Greg and Hobbs. A good thing for both sides.

Yeah buffer .... the football team had a lot of buffers...

Anyway, glad Kevin has returned and appears healthy. A very good thing

“Good morning Pat. Greg will see you in his office in just a few minutes. Would you like a coffee while you wait?”

j/k, of course!
I wasn’t. He will be “bad cop” or “good” when needed. Craig Patrick to Herb Brooks.

Not a bad thing IMO.
