Rutgers punter holds for placements. Please advise ... is he athletic enough to run a trick play (pass and/or run)? Intuitively, you'd expect a receiver with superb hands and speed and/or a backup QB.

The most important thing is not the trick plays, but rather the ability to both catch the snap, AND place the ball in the correct direction, at the correct angle, quickly and surely enough for the FG kicker to kick the ball truely.

Just like the long snapper does not have to be a great blocker, but rather must have the specialized ability to accurately snap the ball to the punter and kicker every, or nearly every time. Remember how bad our snapper was a coupel of eyars ago? And maybe last year?

Having a good snapper and holder can make a big difference.

Anecdotally, it looks to me that a lot of teams have punters hold. To Jellyman's point, the punter has more time to practice the finer points of holding then a backup QB or WR.
