Purdue coach on Arella

Is it common for women to leave early for the pros? Just wondering after the Purdue coaches comment.

They can't leave as early as the men, there are restrictions. For many, it comes down to whether they play out their eligibility when they have sat out a season in the middle of their career (injury / red shirt / transfer). There is an age restriction whereby a slightly older player might be able to leave earlier than a younger one, as well. Some that meet the requirements have skipped their senior seasons, but it is actually pretty uncommon. I would say that most with remaining eligibility (certainly not all, Cappie stayed) tend not to stay post graduation (of course, a lot do also transfer that don't have WNBA ahead as they can play that year immediately under transfer rules post-grad).

Piph left early, skipping her senior season, but went overseas as a pro because she was not eligible for the WNBA draft having not met the requirements. This is even more uncommon, although she is not the only one I believe.

wish this applied to the men too. Just because I'm old school and I hate what is becoming of college sports for men's Bball and football. Oh well. Glad we got her.

I hope she returns to monitor the new class. This program will be tough next year. Not that they weren't special this year. We need to add a pure shooter to the class.

Nice to see at least media SOMEWHERE cover a women's team...

Bruce Beck just (yesterday) did a nice feature on RUWBB and their fast start this season, complete with highlights and a sit-down interview with Arella... very nicely done. It took up most of the sports segment during channel 4's 6pm broadcast. The anchors and Bruce spoke very highly of her as they segued into NBC Nightly News. I've been trying to find it online, but no luck yet. I was shocked to see the story because, as you already implied, this team gets no mainstream coverage anymore.

I was watch BTN women's report and they were discussing the best female players, Arella name was not even mention. Nor did they discussed Rutgers as on of the top teams in the conference.

They were talking about top 5 centers if you’re talking about the same segment I saw yesterday. So Arella would not have been mentioned in that group

I noticed that too. Lots of non-believers, apparently.
sad considering last year was one of our best starts in Big10. Unfortunately the dismissal of experienced players derailed last years success but still would expect more after we did have a good season in league play last year

Arella has been name B10 player of the week twice so far. Trust me, folks are noticing.

I think the national media got used to a certain level of dominance and consistency from CVS-led teams. As good as last year may have been, and as good as this year has been, the squad is still not near the standard that was set in the 2000s. We've kind of become an afterthought the past decade, but with continued hard work and recruiting, it looks like that's about to change for the better.
