Coach Ash addresses the QB situation at the beginning of today's presser. He said last week he addressed the quarterback situation and that Laviano was probably slightly ahead, but now it's back to even.

It begins at 0:52.

I don't think it's a secret that we don't have perfect synergy between personnel at quarterback and the new offensive system. While it's a little discouraging that none of the players has magically stepped up and become a clear leader, I think it's to be expected. We're going to struggle a bit until the proper QB is brought online.

Just reaffirms how crazy it was that Elmer didn't give Rettig a look after Chris went on to struggle in some games.

I really don't think that had Flood given Rettig an opportunity it would have made a difference this year. If Rettig was that much more talented than Laviano and was only on the bench because Flood wouldn't give him a shot then Rettig would be far ahead by now. None of these guys really fit this system well so a lot of the experience in the pro style doesn't matter. The only real benefit from playing for Rettig would have been to be more familiar with the tempo and speed of the game. Let's get passed the "Flood didn't play Rettig thing." It's over.

Its a new system to all of them and they are not being consistent, that seems about right. Probably will not have a QB picked until the end of summer camp.

I really struggle to wrap my head around the idea that everything would be different if Flood had "given Rettig a realistic chance to be the starter" or however the proper way to craft that sentence is these days. I don't understand why people ever thought that, or why they still won't let it go.

In addition, if you believed Flood butchered the QB decision, shouldn't you be glad? It resulted in Flood being fired, which led to coach Ash. If Rettig were as good as you all think he is, Flood would still be here.

I absolutely agree with you. I don't understand it either. Clearly if Rettig was a better QB then he would be in the lead by now. Also, the system last year was prostyle so much of the experience doesn't help. Experiencing the game speed would have helped a little but if Rettig doesn't get the job it won't be because of not playing last year. And, if he doesn't get the job because he doesn't fit the new system well then what difference would it have made if Flood had played him. It is a total non issue.

Hopefully the qb competition, whether real or not, raises the level of our qb group.

I feel it will.

Not the point. 90% of us just wanted to see the #2 QB given a f*cking shot, for more than 1 series at the start of the 4th quarter, in meaningful games. The fact that Fudd went out of his way to say "we won't make a change until the 4th quarter regardless...blah, blah, blah" has proven what a f*cking moron the guy was. It's not about who has "won" the job, or not, halfway through SPRING practice, either, so let's just stop with the nonsense, okay?

Don't get me wrong, odds are we still finish 4-8 last year regardless of who was at the helm, bit that IS NOT the issue MOST of us have or had.

I don't understand how people who watch football and have seen virtually every team in college - including teams gunning for the national title - switch QBs to see if it gives the team a spark, can be so sure that Flood was absolutely correct in never replacing Laviano when he struggled on the field.

This doesn't have to be Laviano vs Rettig. It's the simple idea that switching the QB might have an effect on the game. You never know what effect, if any, it will have until you try it. Guys like Urban Meyer with multiple championships understand this. Guys like Flood, who might have ended his last chance as a head coach, do not.

The struggle is real. But we also have a good QB talent coming in and they are going after some good QB players as well for the future.

This is a major rebuilding project, (some are still in deep denial about that for some reason) it will not happen overnight. it will take years.

Hopefully it will happen. For this season, I just want to see some improvement, I just want us to suck less than last year. That being said, I would be shocked (and happy) if we make a bowl game.

Everything I'm reading we don't have the right personnel to run the system. Wouldn't it be more efficient for this year to adjust the system to fit the personnel and not the other way around?

Rettig and Laviano both ran a ton of spread stuff in HS. Both guys have spent a lot of time in the shotgun. This mismatch of personnel to system is a bit overblown in my opinion and its just another way of saying we don't have a top notch dual-threat Qb yet.

Thats my only knock on this type of spread.. you need a playmaker at the QB position for it, and if you don't have one the offense becomes way easier to stop.

It is the point if people bring it up in a thread about this year's QB competition. If you want to talk about last year and why flood was a bad coach that fine, but people keep implying that Rettig would be in better shape for this years competition and I don't buy it. Last year was totally different and it would not have affected this year's competition. That's all. Knight shift said it well. Beating a dead horse.

As opposed to needing a 6'4" drop back gun slinger in the pro set? Way more athletic kids who can throw ok around the country than there are capable pro set QB's. Not to mention the need for a quality FB and TE. Heck, 2 seasons ago we had an NFL LT, NFL TE, NFL FB, borderline NFL QB, and some pretty good RB's and we still couldn't score. This style is way less taxing on talent.

I actually thought Laviano showed pretty good ability to run the ball last season, and he can throw okay. He's not a gunslinger - that would be more Rettig's skill set. I think Ash's comments indicated that his biggest problem with all the QBs at the moment is that they aren't protecting the ball the way they should. I think Ash may re-institute the Schiano-style doghouse for people that give away the ball.

Stop the loser mentality. The last coach is gone. You look like two year old's who got their binky taken away. Stop crying.

While I did want to see Rettig get some meaningful snaps, I do also think Laviano was our starter for a reason. When he had time and he had a WR getting open, he delivered. There were games we lost that Rettig could have come in earlier and got his a$$ whupped too. Would not have made a difference last year but may have helped Rettig this year. Since we are changing the offense completely, it did not help Laviano or hurt Rettig a whole lot. The playing field is level so the crying should stop now.

Pleeeeease.

The big takeaway to me is that Ash wanted/expected Laviano to take the reigns of this competition and he hasn't. I say this as a Rettig fan, but leaving the past in the past. When you say something to the effect "I had hoped there would be some separation", after previously saying Laviano was ahead, I don't know how else you can take it.

So last week when Ash said that Laviano was "slightly ahead but hadn't separated himself", there was a thread of at least 3 pages populated by mostly Laviano/Flood - supporters - 'I told you so's". Now we're back to even and the sentiment from those same posters is .... "told you Rettig isn't that good". Some people just don't ever want to lose an argument.

In the walking dead Morgan said to Rick - I didn't kill that Wolf, who ended up saving Denise, who ended up saving your son, after he got shot in the eye. It's all connected!

Dunno why but your post reminded me of that. LOL.

Both sides definitely just want to prove they are right even if it means Rutgers losing games.Very sad.

I am a Rutgers supporter which today means Ash / ?. Just go out and help the team win some games.

Who really cares who is right. The only way to prove it would have been for Flood to still be here running a pro set and having a QB competition again. Thankfully that is not happening. New team, new coach, new system. We move on.

Sounds like Laviano is losing the job, not so much Rettig winning it. That's concerning.

While I did want to see Rettig get some meaningful snaps, I do also think Laviano was our starter for a reason. When he had time and he had a WR getting open, he delivered. .

Kansas - 120th PED, 127th Total D
Maryland - 105th PED, 90th Total D
Army - 98th PED,
Indiana - 89th PED, 120th Total D
Nebraska - 78th PED,
Mich State - 72nd PED
Wazzou - 59th PED, 84th Total D
NFSU - awful FCS team

....yes, Laviano hit open WR's against some teams. Some teams with very bad Pass Efficiency Defenses and/or Total D's. Now, the kid was a R-Frosh last year, so I'm not going to beat him up for getting stymied by GOOD D's, that's not my point here, but, you've got to take a look at who he did hit "wide-open" WR's against if you're going to make such statements. It's the same reason Agudosi's game against IU, or Grant's game against Maryland, don't hold much water in the grand scheme of things.

Starting to sound to me like the frosh is going to get a long look before a starter is announced. Don't think they'll announce a starter till fall.

Just reaffirms how crazy it was that Elmer didn't give Rettig a look after Chris went on to struggle in some games.

It is not crazy at all.

1. The more reps a young quarterback gets, the faster he will improve. Taking a look at the back-up is only going to slow the first guy's development. Coach Flood evidently had confidence that Chris Laviano was going to mature into a successful quarterback, so he stuck with him. We shall see whether he was right starting next fall.

2. When the defensive line is on the quarterback in 2 seconds, a coach does not want to suddenly put in a guy who is a statue back there. The odds of him getting seriously hurt are vastly greater than they are for the more mobile guy.

3. Young quarterbacks learn through adversity. You can't predict when a young guy is going to take the next step and develop the composure needed to be more successful in negative situations.

Of course all of these are unacceptable to the ignorant, but any decent coach will tell you these are 3 legitimate reasons for sticking with the first guy.

I am NOT saying there isn't validity in the various arguments presented over and over and over and over again on these boards for making the change - such as giving the quarterback a breather to see what is happening on the field from the sidelines.

But IMO a coach should be free to do it his way, since his job is going to depend on his success.

I am pleased that a change has been made, as I think Coach Flood had weaknesses that led to last year's ugliness. This issue however is entirely blown out of proportion by the fans who saw the 4 stars next to Hayden's name and immediately assumed he should be the guy carrying the team on his back.

Maybe he will do that in the end, but he may not either. I just want what is best for RU, and I am hoping like hell that Coach Ash can deliver what he is promising.

I'm not always right, but never wrong. As long as Coach as shows an ability to adjust, I don't care who he starts. The most frustrating thing to watch is a coach who is predictably inept in the face of the obvious.

Let coach Ash figure it out for himself. Just because fans may like or favor one QB or another doesn't mean anything. All I ask of coach Ash is that he stand by his decision.

Flood stood by his decision!! Ash will make the decision and play the guy he thinks is the best but if it doesn't work out I am sure he will make any adjustments he needs to.

I thougbt it was interesting that The Record/Herald News had this in it:

Even if someone emerges as the front-runner at quarterback, he likely would have to beat out incoming freshman Tylin Oden. Oden, a dual-threat quarterback from Columbia, Tenn., is considered a better fit for the team’s new power spread offense than the signal callers currently on the roster.

That was one of my biggest problems with Flood. He NEVER acted as if there was even a remote chance his job was on the line... Maybe if he did realize Rutgers might fire him he would have been more willing to see if a different QB could get something done.

I understand your point about helping a young QB grow. I still think Laviano would have benefited far more from taking a few snaps off and seeing what was happening on the field rather than struggling all game long. Chances are he would have remained the starter and it's likely the change wouldn't have won any games, but we will never know. Everybody has seen teams come back with a backup. Just look at all of the teams that have given Rutgers trouble when the starter was replaced. Is it likely? No, but it can and does happen.

I think too often people get caught up in Laviano vs. Rettig on these posts. To me, it was always a matter of, if the first guy isn't being particularly effective, try the other guy.

We are all Rutgers fans, the names in these discussion are both irrelevant and going forward, they will be ever changing.

I advocated for Rettig to get some legit playing time last year. Partly because both QBs played well against Norfolk St. and at times we struggled to move the ball, but it really wasn't about Rettig personally. If they had tried the 3rd string because the Coach felt the other guy didn't know the playbook, that's fine, trying NOTHING, that was the part that drove me nuts.
