QB battle update

I thougbt it was interesting that The Record/Herald News had this in it:

Even if someone emerges as the front-runner at quarterback, he likely would have to beat out incoming freshman Tylin Oden. Oden, a dual-threat quarterback from Columbia, Tenn., is considered a better fit for the team’s new power spread offense than the signal callers currently on the roster.
The writer of that article clearly knows nothing...there is no way Oden would be the best option over incumbent starter who has a 6 month head start on learning the offense and has in game experience. Oden may be the best fit but he needs time for the game to slow down before he is ready to step on the field. If its true that Oden is the best option come fall practice then I'd have real concern over the ability of this staff to develop the QB position, I just don't see that being the case with this staff

"I think too often people get caught up in Laviano vs. Rettig on these posts. To me, it was always a matter of, if the first guy isn't being particularly effective, try the other guy."

Exactly. I'd go even further. I wouldn't have cared if Flood really did have a problem with Rettig and skipped over him with someone else. I just think there were times we needed to have Laviano replaced for his benefit (watch a few minutes from the side) and the team's benefit (possibly finding a spark).

100% AGREE.

Kansas - 120th PED, 127th Total D
Maryland - 105th PED, 90th Total D
Army - 98th PED,
Indiana - 89th PED, 120th Total D
Nebraska - 78th PED,
Mich State - 72nd PED
Wazzou - 59th PED, 84th Total D
NFSU - awful FCS team

....yes, Laviano hit open WR's against some teams. Some teams with very bad Pass Efficiency Defenses and/or Total D's. Now, the kid was a R-Frosh last year, so I'm not going to beat him up for getting stymied by GOOD D's, that's not my point here, but, you've got to take a look at who he did hit "wide-open" WR's against if you're going to make such statements. It's the same reason Agudosi's game against IU, or Grant's game against Maryland, don't hold much water in the grand scheme of things.

Nuts, he was a RS SO last year. He say for two years and as a junior he looked awful. That's concerning for me when I think about his upside; or lack there of.

Adding to you comment where you break down his game by game: The whole when laviano has carroo he was fine argument goes against everyone who uses it. So, when he had the best WR Rutgers has ever had, future NFLer he didn't look terrible...

seems like we have some new recruits to put the pressure on the QBs

I don't care who is playing or who is coaching. I only care about winning and support whoever is on the field and the sideline.

saw title -
"QB battle update"
did not anticipate that it would mostly be an 'update' of "LAST YEAR'S QB BATTLE"
- what can possibly be said about all of that - that has not already been said?

Yikes you're right I forgot a year!

I agree wholeheartedly and the MSU game was the perfect example. Without Carroo we can about 150 total yards and probably don't score a point. He completely exposed a young and fairly inexperienced secondary that night.
