While reading the article on today's home page about Rettig starting to look like a starter, I was thinking about the percentage of the play book one can expect no matter who gets the nod to play. None of our players has any real experience to speak of and that is really what it is all about.
We all are expecting a run heavy offense anyway and the role of the QB tends to appear somewhat diminished if he isn't throwing the ball around a lot. The term "manage the position" is probably the most used one for someone who is not considered a major part of the offense. We look for him to not make too many mistakes and by limiting the level of difficulty, the theory is that he just doesn't have the same number of opportunities to screw it all up. Until and if our QB can prove he is capable of throwing the ball accurately and, when needed, long we can expect defenses to play the run thus negating some of our perceived strength. Of course, we are also counting heavily on our defense to keep us in games if we are not able to put as many points on the board as in the past. For all of the ups and downs with Nova, he could certainly light it up when he was playing well. How much of this kind of play can we reasonably expect this year under the circumstances? Will our depth at WR be the threat it has been in our offense?
