My Scarlet R's didn't survive the winter, so I stopped by the box office to pick up some more. They wouldn't give me any more than one, and said that once the current supply runs out (which was low), everyone would have to purchase through the bookstore. The R's are not expensive. You'd think that RU would be handing them out free to every man and woman in NJ that would put one on their cars.

There is nothing free in this world. Someone is paying.

I am sure there will be a bunch handed out at Homecoming.

Head of Marketing is Geoff Brown at gbrown@scarletknights.com. Ticket Office email is tickets@scarletknights.com. Not sure who would be the best to contact or both.We need to find more ways to get these to people, not less. --I would like to see some way we can make these Free and easy for everyone to get around the state--Sussex to Cape May. Shop-Rite,mini marts, gas stations, sporting goods stores, etc.

Smartest thing they may have ever done besides hiring Schiano was giving out those Magnets. If they start charging that would be a colossal blunder. Doesn't sound like smart Forbes thinking!

I went to the Junior Scarlet Knight football camp with my 7 year old two weeks ago. They were giving them out all day. The one day camp was $80 so I guess that's not free.

Just a hunch but once again I think we rush to judgment put to much stock into what some zit faced kid behind a window or on the phone says.

This. I was at an event a week or so ago, and they were handing out R magnets like candy. It certainly didn't seem like anyone was concerned that when these were gone, that's it.

I agree with the rush to judgment point but if the OP quote is accurate it just another in a long of frugal moves by the Barchi and Rutgers 1000 gang.

Such as? What have they done that has made your fan experience worse? Granted I'm football only but they improved the stadium with wider concourses, better pre game tailgate options, started the R Tour, and have done a great job with spring game.

$$$. You know like I do our RV pass went from $20 to the $1000+ including the mandatory minimum donation for RVs . IT wasn't a slow ramp up but an extremely dramatic one. And the conditions in the Blue Lot have not been corrected even though it's a cheap fix. VKJ I've known you for years. When we talk in person on game day it all positive but let me be very clear Rutgers without Schiano and Bob has returned to the cheapest U in the Big Ten.
RU get no $ support for the Barchi crowd. They are sitting on a gold mine but refuse to make the right investments. Don't take my word for it. Ask the former Rutgers coach who parks right in front of you.

Just spoke with Geoff at Rutgers Athletics Marketing who informed me the claim that "once the current supply runs out (which was low), everyone would have to purchase through the bookstore" is BOGUS.

NJbound, did you get a name of the person at the box office?

Speaking of RV pass, last year mine showed up as RV on my ticket page. This year it didn't.....is yours the same?
I have two separate spots for parking listed on my page.

Do you think this subject actually came up at a Barchi meeting? "Okay, next on the agenda, we must now start charging for Block R magnets. To hell with those Scarlet Nation tightwads."

No but the the Athletics Department has been issued a mandate to cut cost from Barchi. That's why some coaches have been let go. Their pension is a problem.

We have been tossed out of Scarlet even though we donated more.

The Athletics Dept doesn't pay for employee benefits (including pension funding). So firing coaches because "their pension is a problem" has no effect on the Athletics budget.

No, I didnt. But when I mildly complained, he had another guy come over and tell me the same thing, so there was definitely no misunderstanding.

Emailed Geoff as well and he confirmed this is bogus. Yes, you can purchase them if you would like but there are tons of other ways to get them for free. Stop by the ticket/marketing table at any sporting event, you usually will see a stack of them there. I believe they were also in the season ticket packages and usually can be found at alumni events as well. Mine never last more than a few weeks as they get lost or stolen all the time and I still have a stack of about 10 on my office desk for that reason.

But it has an effect on the schools budget.

Actually, all benefits are a separate line item appropriation from the state, so it doesn't even have an effect on the University budget. Aside from that, Julie is charged with controlling the Athletics Budget, not the University budget.

We all get that you hate Barchi and blame him for everything from missed field goals to rainy weather.

Upstream already said it, but just to be 100% clear - Due to past legislation, Rutgers does not have to contribute any money for pensions and is not on the hook for any future pension liabilities. As far as pensions, they essentially don't exist when it comes to Rutgers finances.

My brother who runs the game watch parties in the D.C. area gets a box of them and other handouts before the season to give way to those to come to watch the game. Go to an alumni event.

Good to hear they will still be available. I would guess they will also be giving them out at the Rutgers Beach Party this Saturday.

Thank you. I'll be following up with Geoff to provide this info to him. Sounds like some people in the box office will need to be corrected about reality.
