RAC Floor Level Crowd Noise - Fonseca Tweet

There were a couple of times during the tv broadcast, section 118 really looked pitiful. And there’s definitely too much space behind the other basket.

Wish something could be done to bring our home court advantage back to its old glory of sheer volume and a sea of fans looming vertically from the edges of the court.
lol

#118 Remembers. Never should have messed with the footprint for Hobbs’ front row seats and glorified airport terminal bar. Takes away from home court advantage and looks like crap and frankly kinda of depressing looking. Awful optics.

WVU ‘82 does not get enough credit as still believe most fans ever in RAC as was literally SRO at 118. Missouri and UNLV in many ways even louder than PSU as it was all RU fans.

I have been at all but a few home games since the RAC opened in 1977. It is hard to compare the loudness level on yesterday's game against the 1989 PSU game or some of the older games vs Seton Hall or Las Vegas. They all were very loud as was yesterday's game. I've been at all of them and all of them plus yesterday's game were all extremely loud. I will not choose one over the others.
42 years as a season ticket holder at the RAC as you are. I still think the PSU game was the loudest.

The women also used to have so epic battles with state penn back in the air wicks era!!!

So when did the idiotic decision take place that moved the student section seats back to make room for the cheerleaders. And how can the seats go back to the way they should be to create a better home environment

Maybe when we entered the Big East.

I've been to every home game since 1978 (except the first game this year and one game 2 years ago that was snowing and we could not find a clear road to the RAC) and I would have to say that while this Saturday's game against SHU was loud it was not even in the same league as the A10 Championship game versus Penn State. There were also a couple of games against Syracuse that left my ears ringing for days.

my obervations of the 1989 PSU video:

1- bring back 118

2- everyone was standing the whole game! I'll never forget that, as a 17 year old punk kid behind the PSU bench.

Students stand the whole games, the others I can't speak for

I think it happened around 2012. When we upset Nova in 2011 the students were down to the ground level. Go to the 11:15 mark in this video.

My guess is they move everyone back and put up the barrier for safety reasons but it had to cut a good 5 rows off and now there’s way too much space behind the net. They should install a 3-5 row section for the die hard kids that show up every game in front of the current section to get them closer to the basket.

Not to mention that 1978 NIT game when Rutgers, led by Jammin' James Bailey beat Larry Bird's Indiana State team. RU won on a last few seconds shot by Bailey after Steve Hefele stole the ball. Incredible bedlam.

The St. John's and SU games during the RAC's first season were also bonkers and one side of the 300 level seats were all students back then. But the loudest crowd that year came in the last home game, in the second round of the NIT, when RU hosted and defeated Indiana State, with junior Larry Bird in a barn burner. I recall the ISU cheerleaders looking up at the crowd with "these people are nuts!" looks on their faces. That would be the next to last defeat of his college career, the last being in the Final 4 in his senior season.

Seen all the big games at the RAC, the nova game was the best ending ever there. Having to hit big shot after big shot, still to be down three at the end, and get the game winning 4 Point play Amazing

Listen penn state was epic . But is it fair to say that’s the high water mark and judge everything against that ?
No it’s not . People need to stop comparing that game to regular season games , especially early regular season games.
That was a conference championship game during famed championship week with an ncaa bid on the line. Against a hated rival . That type of scenario will never ever happen again .

That Florida game was a very charged atmosphere with the Rosario angle. Plus Carter and to a lesser extent Seagears and Mack, all freshmen, legit outplayed Bradley Beal and Kenny Boynton. Add to that two OTs? Crazy game. I was up in the 300s for that one so I didn't get the full sonic experience but it was one of the more fun games I've been to. Man I was loving Mike Rice at that point.

UVA in late 2002, the return of Benedict Billet, was even more charged but we lost

He traveled at the end of that game and they gave him two free throws that sealed it for VA.

it was certainly very good yesterday but it pales when compared it to some early 90s tussles with SHU, Missouri, UNLV and Penn State

C'mon, "pales in comparison?" I agree it wasn't quite at the level of the games you mentioned, especially PSU, the loudest game I've ever been at, but "pales in comparison" means it wasn't even close and I don't think this was that far off, especially during the first 5-10 minutes of the game. I would also like to see us move the student section back closer to where it was - we don't need all those camera people and the cheerleaders can make do with a little less room.

The ESPN game.

I was there in the he nosebleeds as a student.

Amazing.
Was in the student section for that PSU game along with 2 of the loudest, craziest fans ever and it was just friggin' insane - thought I was going to have an aneurysm at one point, lol...

Nope. Here’s why:

- No students behind the home team bench

- Student section 20 feet behind the baseline and only 2/3 (?) of it was filled with students

- No students in the 300s

..I honestly think some people forget how insanely loud the RAC was some of those afternoons and nights.

I can remember leaving games when Wenzel was coaching dripping with sweat and hoarse voice. It was loud and it was hot. We had a group of about 6 and our season tix were right under the basket

Besides the seating alterations, the temperature change in the RAC is the biggest change in recent years. The RAC was hot ( :Fire) 24/7. The temperature could be below freezing outside. Didn't matter. I had to wear a t-shirt because it was so hot inside. When the cooling unit was installed, that all changed. In fact, I now always wear a sweatshirt because for most games I have to deal with a significant draft in the area of my seats (second row, section 204).

While PSU was insane, guessing still 1500 to 2000 PSU fans including Joe Pa. While many want to think the loudest, it wasn’t.
