1. Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey doing Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey things. Triple-double for Dylan with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists. His three 3s in the second half were the key to Rutgers holding off a pesky Columbia team and building on the lead. Ace Bailey's mid-range twos -- he hit about 6 of those shots in a row -- in the first half gave us a solid lead and helped us navigate the zone defense, and he ended up leading the team with 24 points on 11-18 shooting. He was unguardable and his mid-range shot was ON.
2. Dylan's triple-double was the first one since Roy Hinson in 1983. Wow.
3. JMike played his best game as a Scarlet Knight, with 11 points (on 4-8 shooting, including a surprising 2-4 from deep), 7 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block, and 0 (ZERO) turnovers. He also played pesky defense, getting a number of deflections in addition to the steals.
4. Rutgers (primarily JWill) did a solid job containing Geronimo Rubio-De La Rosa, limiting him to 17 points on an inefficient 7-16 (3-11) from the field.
5. Rutgers had 26 assists on 36 FGs, and 19 of those assists came from Dylan (12) and JMike (7), against just 1 TO.
6. Solid metrics tonight. Rutgers scored 91 points on 80 possessions, for 1.1375 points per possession. On defense, Rutgers only gave up 64 points on 73 possessions, for .8767 points per possession. This should help our KenPom and Bart rankings, and ultimately our NET ranking.
7. On the negative side, other than Sommerville, who provided some inside scoring off the bench (11 points, 5 rebounds), the rest of the bench had a dreadful night shooting. Martini, Hayes, Derkack, and Acuff combined to shoot 4-19, and two of those makes were meaningless late threes by Acuff when the game was already decided and Columbia had already emptied its bench. Hayes and Martini combined to go 1-7 from 3-pt range, and most of those 7 shots were good looks. They MUST hit a higher percentage of those shots going forward. M-U-S-T.
8. IN EDIT - I should mention that I thought Rutgers did a pretty good job defending Columbia's half-court sets. There were very few easy backdoor baskets, despite Columbia running high post picks and options.
