A few months ago I had the opportunity to interact with one of the top NJ basketball recruits along with both his mother and father. I will not reveal his name however I will tell you he currently plays for one of the powerhouse
schools that has won the state title and has sent its players to national championship universities.
As a junior, this player has already been recruited and has received offers from several top schools.
I asked him if he gave Rutgers consideration and he laughed and said "Rutgers stinks".
All my Rutgers passion then poured out and I gave him reasons why he should seriously consider Rutgers.
I explained to him that Rutgers played in the Big Ten which arguably is the best of the power conferences.
I told him that he could not do it himself, but if he were able to convince a few of his teammates to join him
they would be hero's turning a terrible program into a winner in their home state.
And the selling point was that his parents and friends could attend every home game as Rutgers is a short drive
away. At this point of the conversation his mother chimes in and tells her son to listen to me!
The thought of being able to see her son play at Rutgers was a major positive.
I asked his father if they would be willing to meet with Coach Jordan and give Rutgers a shot.
His Dad then told me things I couldn't believe.
He told me while many schools including Villanova, SHU, Syracuse, and many others have shown interest, Rutgers has never been seen. He gave me a list of upcoming AAU showcases and said Rutgers coaches MUST
attend. According to him, they have never been seen.
He then provides me with his personal cell number and says he will be more than happy to talk to Coach Jordan.
I wasn't sure how to proceed especially being a booster so I first emailed Julie Herman. I got no response.
I then decided to call Brian (BK) who can corroborate this story.
Brian told me he would approach Eddie and make him aware of these potential recruits.
Brian did and called me back the next day.
All I can say was that I was flabbergasted by his response.
Eddie told him they were aware of these players however due to coaching obligations they were not able
to actively recruit. They would try sometime in the future to do so.
When I read the article recently posted here about lack of recruiting I was not surprised.
Here was a family with one of NJ's top recruits who was willing to at least sit down and hear what Rutgers had to say. Eddie and his staff were too busy!
I thank Brian for reaching out to EJ.
It is sad other obligations took priority.
We need an energetic coach who can go out and actively recruit.
This current staff is not capable of getting it done.
