Recruiting

Accessible merchandise would do a lot. I know a link went out once in the past but a year round website where people could be nice wrestling shirts, hoodies, and half zips is an easy way to raise money but it doesn’t seem like anyone wants to do it. T shirts can be made very cheap especially in bulk and I think most wrestling fans would pay $25 for a shirt and $50 for a hoodie. It doesn’t cost nearly that amount do produce.
The SKWC also needs volunteers to do things like this.

I would love if they did this more often as well. I always need Christmas presents for the entire family. Bought some last year for my mother and father-in-law. They asked, "what's the SKWC"? I said, "you both just became sponsors of student athletes and fans of Rutgers Wrestling". My mother-in-law said, "O how nice I love the idea of helping out students" my father-in-law, "this will make a great workout warm up".

Have you done any team bulk orders? Everything is custom printed and takes 6-8 weeks minimum, unless you want crap, and you have to meet a minimum quantity for each item or pay a setup fee, higher rates on it or it's canceled. Very few want to buy a ton of gear and sit on inventory not knowing when or if it'll sell.

Depends what you mean by bulk. 100+ yes. 1000+ no.

I’m sure there is room somewhere at the Rutgers facility where the inventory can be kept. Order a few hundred shirts of various sizes and store them somewhere. Sell them online. Get them on Fanatics or something. Even if you don’t profit the exposure will be great.

I thought SKWC has an account with Rudis.

If I had the space in my house, or close proximity to the Rutgers facility to do it I absolutely would. I don’t think it would be particularly difficult to do or even be that time consuming. Once the bulk order is placed, all it is is finding the right item from the inventory, putting it in a bag and shipping it out. Of course you would need access to funds to pay for shipping costs and materials. The more time consuming feature would be customer service if the project became big enough but that would be a good problem to have.

Think you are correct...RU wrestling gear is with Rudis and I think SKWC is also. Usually the way these orders work is they put say 10 items on the site to order(and you need to hit a minimum order for each item to go to production). After the final date these wrestling sites go to print and ship them out. Rudis, ScrapLife etc of course make their money and the team, club etc make a percentage(not a big $$$ maker for the team or club).

The Pin Pool is all profit. This year we had 154 pin pool donors and the per pin $$ was just under $3,000 per pin. So we raised $150 K........With the passionate fans and the amount of season ticket holders, hopefully we can double the amount of participants and $$ per pin.

ScarletGrapfan and DUForever - It seems you know a lot about the SKWC's finances. Can you provide transparency and let us know how much the SKWC raised in the last two years and how much we have in the bank. I think charities normally provide their finances to donors and potential donors.

Money is critical and needed. What is more important is what you do with money. Help us understand what we do with our money. Penn State didn't get their big gift until after Cael won 3 national championships. We are not U Penn. They will get their share of money and top academic kids. Most top wrestlers still prefer the Big Ten to the EIWA. We can offer a really smart kid the Rutgers Honor College.

Some programs have more advantages than Rutgers. But, we have more advantages than most. A great practice facility, 2 national champions as coaches, a national team coach as our RTC coach, great weight room, high quality nutrition, fully funded scholarships, one of the best fan bases in the country, and we are located in a hot bed of high school wrestling.

Rutgers wrestling fans have clearly stepped and supported the team financially. Their contributions built one of the country's best wrestling facilities. We know it can be done at RU as Ashnault and Suriano won titles wrestling in a dungeon.

I can't blame the fans for wanting better results.

I believe someone who knows exactly about the SKWC made a new thread. I suggest all of you who have questions read it. I think it will answer all of your questions…IMO.

You really don't know about this? It's been mentioned a hundred or so times on the wrestling board. All you have to do is type in "SKWC" and it will bring up their website which you can click on to find out about all they do.

SKWC has to do more and work harder than most in the area to acquire funding. They simply don't have the sugar daddies tossing around millions like psu, Princeton or Penn. They don't have any super rich fans of Rutgers wrestling willing to part with a few million, so they have to cultivate the masses into each giving a little. They do golf outings, other various events(socials) and the pin pool to acquire money.
Yes, I do. I did a poor job of wording my post. I meant to say that the SKWC seems the weak link for recruiting and training based on many posts here. Funding is the reason given and the greatest need in order to build the club and improve recruiting and team performance. I think I'm safe so far because I'm just summarizing what many have said.

My question was and is more about what is being done to attract the big money. I know the pin pool and other fundraising efforts are obviously very important to maintain today's financial needs. The discussion that followed my post highlighted all those things - and I was surprised at how much the pin pool generates - but there was nothing about efforts to seek bigger money and that seems to be what is needed. NJ is a wealthy state with many wealthy individuals and large companies. Individuals would need to have an interest in wrestling to get any money from them but there may be a greater opportunity to obtain donations from corporations. One that comes to mind is J&J. They are headquartered in New Brunswick and a very wealthy and successful company. Have all the wrestlers use Band-Aids, Tylenol, and other of their products and seek some money from them.

Bill wrote recently about his fundraising efforts in Summerville that raised a couple of million dollars for a football field. I wouldn't ask him to engage in that activity now but he might be able to advise how to go about it. Get a marketing major to sell the wrestling program to corporations.

That type of campaign has been ongoing for years and of course locally based corporations have been approached. Billy G has been involved with the SKWC for a long time. He is totally dedicated to the club and team and is tireless in his efforts. There have been some positive results but not the mega donor that other RTC’s have found. If you have any leads I’m sure that the SKWC would welcome your participation as well as any others who can assist.

FWIW, the Rudis gear is really high quality and I really enjoy my purchases. I hope there is another sale

Have been stopped a few times around town and asked about the SKWC while wearing the gear

It may not be a huge money maker, but it does help with visibility

Real Woods appears to be graduating Stanford after 4 years and will be a grad transfer with 2 years of eligibility. PSU is mentioned as a likely destination on social.

Nate Desmond, PA state champ, also seems to be interested in joining Perry at PSU.

We need some recruiting updates...

Hope Griffith is graduating Stanford early and wants to finish his career at home like Sea Bass did.

At this point unless some catastrophic happens at PSU there isn't going to be much of a competition for the National Championship for a very long time unfortunately. Especially since it appears that scholarships don't seem to matter anymore because obviously these guys are getting taken care of in one way or another.

He mentioned in the interview that he wants to go 174 which doesn't work that well in our lineup

I also don't see how PSU works at 174 with Starocci, Brooks, and Dean all back so there is no where to go.

174 is good
Turley has not used a red shirt.
He missed all of this season already so who knows if he will want to RS and miss another entire season if he is healthy/feels good. This assumes he is fully healed. If not, it's a no brainer.

Goodale likely will leave it up to Turley then. Maybe Turley looks at it as it'll be a way to recoup further with a RS and train with Monday in an iron sharpens iron situation.

Right, but there is a lot to consider because not everyone wants to be in college for 6 years. If he RS next season, he will be a 4th year sophomore. My point was that 174 isn't ideal because there are a ton of other factors/impacts to consider, whereas 165 is an absolute slam dunk.

Saw that about a woods, but that would screw VanNess. Maybe he’ll transfer to RU. One can hope.
