Recruiting

He’s really strong on top , rode Vasquez out 3 different times for a whole period this year …his junior coach was actually a D3 ncaa finalist, kid always seemed small for the weight
Yes, Montville. Pretty close to where I grew up. Billy Templeton is his coach. Very tough dude from what I heard. Karl Monaco is there too. I wrestled with his brother John Monaco ( same area, but different schools), all from Montclair State, when the team was dominant in D3 and they qualified D3 champs for D1 tournament. I guess Montville has a who's who of coaches. Took a quick look at the roster, and the results. Have to agree, with the PAL comment. With that type of coaching, there should be some better results. Maybe it's the Rec. I can't say. Unfortunately, you get a lot of guys at the youth level who are "just volunteers" with limited to no wrestled experience. Also ( and I can't speak for Montville), you have a lot of paycheck coaches in high school now. It's "buddy time" and no real passion anymore. At these privileged high schools, they tend to get that up and down the Athletics departments.

No inside info here but I am familiar with the wrestlers outside of Gayer. RU may ask them to redshirt up front like several of this years freshmen. But Casale and Soldano should be in lineup sooner rather than later. Soldano may depend on Turley situation as well as what the plan is for 197. Not sure if Casale is HWT or could squeeze into 197 but likely a spot either way. Gayer would get chance to compete at 57/65, I’d think. Fongaro is interesting prospect but in crowded spot. I expect him to redshirt year 1, then need to see how things play out.

Social rumor from Mineo: Apparently, Iowa has Lee's dad tampering with college wrestlers at other schools by calling them and telling them to enter the portal so he can setup a meeting with Brands 😬😳

It's honestly not even surprising anymore.

I miss the days when they let the D2 and D3 Champ into the NCAA bracket.

I thought it was DivIII who put an end to their participation as a cost saving move?
I don't have first hand knowledge. When Haselrig passed, I remember reading up and got the impression that it was D1 coaches. I think I got it from this article and the quote is: "When he was done, the NCAA instituted what became known as the Haselrig rule to prevent Division II wrestlers from embarrassing Division 1 programs the way he had."

D2 and D3 wrestlers had only won a handful of matches prior to Haselrig. Because they weren't competitive, my guess would have been that D1 coaches didn't want to give up space in the tourney that could go to wrestlers that in their view were more deserving (this is total speculation). Ironically, it took Haselrig for the rule to be changed.

I thought the reason was that they didn’t want an elite prospect going the D2 route in an attempt to win championships in multiple classes.

I wrestled Carlton 3 times in college. He was the best I faced and I faced quite a few national champions. He had the total package.
290 pounds solid muscle and cut to make the limit
super quick and light on his feet for that size
great balance and in good position at all times
super strong and compact. He was like grabbing a refrigerator.
giant and powerful legs that removed shooting on him as an option

other guys I faced that were national champions
Kurt Angle
Mark Coleman
Greg Haladay
Matt Ruppel
Mark Kerr

Carlton was hands down the best out of all of these as an opponent. Side note he was a really nice guy. Never played a down of college football and was drafted and I believe a 2x all pro guard. Amazing athlete. I think he went to Pittsburg out of high school and transferred to Pitt-Johnstown because he was homesick. Very quiet and unassuming.

for you north Jersey guys I wrestled John Place from Sparta when he was Penn State. I believe if he didn’t play football and injure his shoulders and had just focused on wrestling he would have been a national champion. He has the total package. Great wrestler with all of the physical attributes. Good dude as well.

After that resume I'm just going to say now what everyone's thinking, you really need to post here more often.

Ahem...what if it's Crackers with a new screen name?
No way, this treasure trove of newfound knowledge to digest has been on here since 2003. Plus like @wngarbarini said, Crackers would have had to gone up 4 to 5 weight class to wrestle those dudes. I know Crackers back in his day would have taken on all comers, but even he would have been nuts to take on these heavyweights.

Kol..you are correct. I was a scrapper, but not Haselrig scrapping. More like a 100lbs, just to break even. Hey Bill, my apologies for not getting back to you. I for some reason enabled my email with an "ignore" button. I will be out in Jersey in 3 weeks. Are you up for some dinner? Email me again when you get a chance. Plus, I'll probably have to braid my hair like Suriano.

157 lbs: Avery Bassett (35) - George Mason already going to Lock Haven

165 lbs: Drew Nicholson (31) - Chattanooga only a slight upgrade and only 1 year left

174 lbs: Matt Finesilver (8) - Duke Crowded room,

184 lbs: Tate Samuelson (15) - Wyoming, Rocky Jordan (17) - Ohio State, Anthony Montalvo (19) Oklahoma State No Need at this weight

197 lbs: Jacob Ferreira (31) - North Carolina State best 197 in the portal but very average

285 lbs: Yaraslau Slavikouski (9) - Harvard has two years left(most likely 3 cause of injury this year). He would be an upgrade

I am sure the coaches are looking at all options. A lot of kids in transfer portal are in it because they cant start at current school, tuff to get kids to come if they might not start here.

Give me the Harvard Heavyweight. We haven't had a legitimately good Heavy that made noise in the Tourney since Billy the Kid.

This is why I’ve always preferred one all American caliber wrestler at a weight over 2/3 national qualifier lvl wrestler at a weight… eventually one of them ends up transferring out/quitting rather then be backup/training partner

Mullen has visited Okie State and West Point. I think that says something about his priorities.

One is a glorified community college that granted is a wrestling powerhouse historically, and the other is elite academically but a service academy. Okie State and West Point couldn't be more different.

Different, yes, but each serves an elite interest. If he decides wrestling is the priority, he is likely to choose a wrestling powerhouse like OSU. West Point is indeed very prestigious. He'll have elite choices when he decides his priority. SCNJ thinks it just means he wants to go to college - what a dummy.
