Rettig's mobility not good enough

Also, Hicks is much better than Goodwin and should be starting.

Hicks clearly better than goodwin

Wasnt hicks 3rd string? Is he a 3 rd stringer? Lets use some rationale - a new staff is making new judgments- doesnt mean they are right. They are doing their best but when you adopt a 4 th string moniker because someone else said so with no more bacsis, makes one look a little foolish.
Hicks is a better running then Goodwin But Goodwin is a better blocker and has better hands then hicks or Martin.
One play Hicks stood in the back field pumped his hands and feet and a D-lineman went right pass him and almost sacked CL
PLEASE watch the game before sounding off
As for your 3rd string comment hicks was not playing to his potential- it was a motivational tool- it proved successful

I don't think we can expect stellar QB play, as none are really suited to the offense Ash wants to run. Offensive line improvement would help.

What boggles my mind is every coach who has ever coached Rettig has thought he shouldn't get snaps. We're talking about more than three completely different staffs at multiple schools.

Yet our fans are arrogant enough to think we know better. From watching a half against Norfolk and some garbage time?

Right now, at least three QBs need to get injured or pulled before Rettig sees the field. If you don't want laviano to start, root for the backup. Not the backup to the backup to the backup to the backup. It's just silly.

I completely agree Laviano is not the answer. But Redding? It will be more of the same. We need a qb that can run for first downs when the pocket collapses which looks like will happen often.

But that's what we do here after a loss. Be silly.

Yeah, you're right. It's pretty silly to think that a qb that can stretch the field with a stronger arm can help this team. The fourth stringer on this team also shouldn't even be on the field because there is so much gap in talent.
I think I will trust the judgment of 3 coaching staffs before I trust a poster who has made a series of idiotic and derogatory comments since the game ended.

What's idiotic about my posts? I'm only posting my opinion. Is it possible that this is what a forum is for? You can disagree with me but don't resort to name calling. It's really immature.

Lol why does anybody still think he is good? 4th string QB, and probably 5th best if you include TO who may be red shirting
I have accepted the fact that Rettig will not play here. I am also not going to criticize the coaching staff because, I have faith that they will put the best players on the field. You can call me crazy but I also think that Rettig will go somewhere and be successful.

In my opinion the problem comes from transitioning from the pro set to the spread. We don't have the OL or a RB of Ray Rices caliber to really play a pro set. We don't possess the speed or talent to play street ball (spread). Yes, this is a real problem. A really good coaching staff would assess the talent on the team and figure out the best possible offense for them to play. Instead, today's modern coaches create an offensive scheme and then try to mold and recruit players to fit that offense. Three issues, that takes years to implement, a need to recruit elite talent and finally earn your paycheck by coaching up these kids !!!!!

Apparently some of our fans are better coaches than those on all three staffs. Simply amazing. [laughing]

And if only Ash would put in the backups during a meaningful time in a game so these fans can judge for themselves why player A is better than player B. And why dont we just do this at all the positions... not just QB?? The fans have a RIGHT to see for themselves why the backup is the backup !!

Wouldn't it be great if we had Peyton Manning on the bench being overlooked by the staff. If the problem was as easy to solve as waking up the staff so they recognize Peyton and put him in the game. And by doing so, not only will the QB be better but, simply through osmosis, the receivers will get separation and the OL will pass and run block better.

In an effort to understand the mindset one must have to think he knows than three coaching staffs, the only thing I can come up with is that some fans sometimes confuse wishful thinking for logic.

Makes me think of Chase Dodd over Tom Savage all over again.

I don't know claim to know better but i know that coaching staffs have not always been played the better player in the past. I would like to know if this is the case.
This coaching staff has exactly one game under it's belt. So they don't have any history at all, let alone a history of playing the wrong players.

And while I'm sure that plenty of college football coaches have made plenty of incorrect player decisions, in Rettig's case, we're talking about three different staffs all making the same conclusion. In Laviano's case, two different staffs have made the same conclusion.

The last staff stuck with their QB decision. This new staff may or may not. But it was one game. Maybe it's reasonable to allow the new staff a few more games before accusing them of sucking at player decisions, no?

Also, the staff was not shy or slow to replace Muller on Saturday. So it's not unreasonable to think that: (a) if Laviano was sucking it up on the field and (b) we had a backup QB the staff thought would perform better under the same circumstances, that the staff would have replaced Laviano as well.

That tells us (a) that the staff is NOT stubborn, (b) that the staff is not afraid to try something different, and (c) that the staff is not "playing favorites".

Edit: It might also tell us that the staff did not feel that Laviano's bad game was the cause of the team's bad game; but rather that the team's overall bad game was the problem.

That is a good start, but the staff should make the game film available online for the fans and have the coach's meeting available as a video conference so fans can give their input after breaking down the film.

Yeah and fans that have opinions shouldn't post at all and everyone here should just write I support the coaches' decision because they're right all the time.

Yet you liked oldtimer67's post about Ash losing the fan base after one game. That is not extremist?

I don't think he said that he lost the fanbase after one game. I think he said that Ash can lose the fanbase if he continues to be stubborn despite Laviano struggles as the starter. At least, that was my interpretation. To me, that's not extreme.

This thread reminds me of various dodd threads....but primarily it reminds me of leaving RU stadium after a loss and hearing people begging for Jabu to replace Teel.....

Rettig is not the answer, not for LSU, not for 2015 RU and not for 2016 RU, stop star gazing.

That said, are Odin or Allen better than this debacle? I'd like to see them out there in game action.
i think we all would like to see oldin or allen or gio in game action, then we could put the laviano question to rest, one way or another

URBAN LEGEND ALERT: (Modern day Justise Hairston as a chronic fumbler)

"What boggles my mind is every coach who has ever coached Rettig has thought he shouldn't get snaps. We're talking about more than three completely different staffs at multiple schools."

What boggles the minds of those who are not trying to defend a position is that this yarn gets perpetuated as proof of a lack of qb skill by the kid. If you actually look at the history it's pretty silly to perpetuate, but it of course is the knee jerk to support a position.

First, he wasn't going to play as a freshman at LSU. Don't believe it was ever in the plans. To say that the staff thought he would never get snaps there is just incorrect. By accounts, the type of O changed and the kid looked for a situation likely where he could get a shot to be the starter (w RU ) and took the opportunity. Last year it was said that he was in a tight competition and he threw td passes in actual games. If you want to use Flood's judgment of playing or not playing him more as a measure of proof well that speaks to the merits of the position. Lastly, we are now trying a spread (although the game v Wash really could have fooled many) and the staff may feel his skill set is not a fit. All of that doesn't mean 3 staffs thought he shouldn't get snaps. There was a move, some very poor judgment and now an O that may be a poor fit.

Considering Laviano's well known skill set and abilities under pressure do I think Rettig could do as well or better with this offense-absolutely. Just the threat of an actual 10+ yard pass would loosen the D.

Would Gio or Allen do better--have no idea but I would like to see the result. This staff clearly wanted to start with experience at qb and ease into the new system.

While that's understandable to a degree, all the talk about competition and all positions being open is feeling like it's perhaps hollow. Muller-a senior got pulled! We had no threat of an O on Saturday FROM THE QB POSITION. Why not pull Laviano and see if one of the others could light a spark if competition truly rules the day? Ash's commnets had led the faityhful to believe that any player -qb included-would be pulled if not performing. THAT IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY HE HAS HAD SO MUCH SUPPORT AND THE OFF SEASON WENT SO WELL. There was no negativity as the belief was that if Laviano played it was fine-if he did well he would play and that would be great--if he put up 0 td's and lost by more than 30-he would certainly be pulled. That was at leas the understanding I had from all of Ash's comments.

Ash yesterday said that the green jersey work is different from real games-somewhat of an acknowledgement. Could always go back to Laviano for the Howard game and extoll all of his great non pressure passes we will see v inferior competition if another qb got time v Wash. It appears a decision was made to give Laviano until Iowa at least to prove himself. Howard and NM will allow for the statements of a 2-1 qb to be made and yadda yadda about a tough opening day but he has grown etc. That's their choice but don't expect many who have been on board with the true competition mantra not to see this as a disappointment and incongruous with what has been put out.

If Washington wanted to they could have hung 80 on us and that is the problem, we were never in the game, because there was no game plan. No cohesiveness between the offenseive line, quarterback and running back. The defense played a little. Better because Washington sat many of there starters down. I was opposed to Ash because he had no HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE. My choice was Al Golden. Most posters laughed off Golden. I hope I'm wrong about Ash.

untill given a chance they could not do worse

Can one do worse than 0 td's and multiple turnovers?

Why the need to defend that type of play and indicate no one else on the roster could do better. I don't see anyone saying if he is doing well it's not ok for him to play. But when not little--but no production-let's see someone else. All this arguing against seeing someone else run this O is just dividing things. If Ash is true to the competition motto then I don't think we see this arguing. See bama and sc--who changed qb's and were putting point son the board! We had a wild knight td with no change.

Yes

What kills me is Savage is playing on Sundays !

I would like to see a backup or TWO get some snaps vs Howard and NM.....if Laviano gets hurt I like the idea of the guy that steps in having some game experience.

When I played at Cornell(way back in the 70s and YES we played Rutgers & won 2 out of 3x) the coach would give players a gametime shot,,,because some players are just GAME players. Things get REAL different when the guy across from you wants to take your head off,,,,,some guys just get adrenyline pumping and step up!!!

So true. Great point.

Why does anyone think anybody behind Laviano on the depth chart is better?
Because having watched Laviano play we have come to the conclusion that he is not that good.

And I am not calling for Rettig, last year he should have gotten more of a chance, but this year, if Laviano continues to struggle, I am fine with Gio or Allen(I'm preferring the former at the moment).

Note I am not not calling to bench Laviano yet, and I do think Ash will make a change if things do not.

Golden couldn't win with a team loaded with bluechip talent. If he was the one wearing the headset on Saturday the end result would still have been the same. You're right UW could have hung 80 on us - with Golden's buddy Matk D'Onofrio calling the D.

We used to hear some crazy conspiracy theories on why Dodd wasn't starting.

Why do you think coaches are not playing the better player this season?
Why is Goodwin still ahead of Hicks on the depth chart?

I've watched for 2 years and one game where Hicks is clearly the better RB.

But Coach likes certain things about Goodwin, maybe he's more mature, I'll say he is definitely the better pass catcher and blocker. And maybe the same is at play with Laviano. . They like certain aspects about Laviano, Flood clearly thought Laviano's leadership was important, and I've heard some similar quotes from Ash, despite perhaps not being as good at other aspects, like throwing the ball.

I don't discount Laviano being the better practice QB. Where as another guy may be a better game QB.
