Ron Sr on Dylan’s Recruitment

New announcement timeline for Dylan…
Months away now.
That’s not good news at all. Definitely contrary to the buzz I had heard a while back. I always took it with a grain of salt but the word had been end of July.

I assume you are only referring to kids on a full scholarship. Because I currently have one in college and just put one through and if I am paying $140,000 I’m gonna have a say in the process.
What I wrote: "parents should NOT make their kid's college decision for them"
Isn't contradicted by what you wrote.

If you pay $140,000 to put a kid through school - you want to be 100% sure it's a place they really, really want to go, not someplace they go to make their grandparents happy.

You are overblowing this decision, it is a one year decision for Dylan. I am sure he and his father spend much more time discussing the NBA than they do about his college decision. We as fans get more worked up about this because it is more important to us than it is to Dylan.
No I get concerned about it because I've seen parents do this stuff to kids
I've seen kids go to a school to make their parents happy and not end well.

For every 1 of those I’ve probably seen 10 where the kid was free to choose whatever they wanted and it didn’t end well (this includes significantly regretting at 25 the debt they wish they didn’t incur to go to college).
I didn’t tell my kids where to go to school but they certainly couldn’t choose to go anywhere they wanted without regard to the cost, ease of seeing family, and minimizing their own debt (among other typical reasons).

With us, we broke it down to 3 schools as finalists where we were part of the discussion with our son. And then, we allowed him to make his selection completely on his own with our full support regardless of who he selected.
It’s funny, because he didn’t even tell us until the night before we faxed his commitment. He had the final week with the 3 schools and we never asked and he didn’t say. We went out that night as family and invited his HS coach to join us and we all found out together.

So much freakin drama for one year…but also not unexpected and I do expect a lot more. Of course, we lose him and we probably lose Ace. He’s certainly got us over a barrel.
