RU Wrestling Recruits State Tourney Results

Devon Britton medical forfeited once again in the finals, but i'm guessing he isn't 100% and simply content with advancing.

Dear RU Coaches,
Please make a competitive scholarship offer to sophomore Dylan Weaver. His only loss in the Tournament was to JoJo, losing 6-4. He reminds me of the Mastrogiovanni brothers at Blair. By his senior year I think we will see him ranked in the top 25 pound per pound. Thanks for your consideration to this matter.
Agree, but he's been attending Cornell camps for years

Foca scored more points, that's what he did. Some day you guys will learn. The guys that have little to no offense against the better opponents don't succeed in college. I've been right about everyone of these.

Counter wrestler? He scored on his own shot and countered. There's a difference between that and solely a defensive counter wrestler.
What was good? He did more to win a state title. Poz has 0. Was he explosive? No, but he scored and held onto the lead while Poz never threatened. I never said Foca was impressive or would be an AA.
Anthony Ashnault won his 4th State title by a score of 3-1. Against Gary Dinmore who is now a backup at Rider.. You can't make generaltizations, too many exceptions w different styles

Poz goes to Defillipis's wrestling club.. He works on teaching kids to get after it and SCORE POINTS... Poz is his star pupil... To be that, you have to be a kid who works his ass off and be coachable... To write this kid off based on one match vs a top 10 kid in the country at his weight is not only laughable... But also very ignorant... Just like Aragona, I don't think Poz has even scratched the surface of his potential...

Yes, he’s a Yale Street kid. Hoping he blossoms as well. We shall see.

Nice job by Jo Jo. Kids a keeper.

Just because Donnie teaches being relentless doesn't mean all of his wrestlers are. I've seen enough Yale St kids to know some are and some aren't, just like every other club. You can't teach being aggressive. Hey, I hope he proves me wrong but I don't see it.

On another note, state finals are way too long. Too much down time. Over 3 hours is ridiculous (over 4 with the parade but I'm only counting when the 1st match started). 2-2.5 hours is all it should take.

Guess you glanced over the important part..."He's his star pupil"

Jordan Burroughs only won 1 high school title...just sayin....

His dad, Scott Weaver, was Donnie's coach in high school, so you can't get a better connection then that!
That said, it does not mean that he is an RU lock! Many things factor into an athlete's college choice.

Fine :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Go RU!
Diane

LOL !

2 other tidbits- Jewel Gonzalez of Phillipsburg, who works out in the same room with Cody Harrison at P'burg, was OW for winning 160 with all pins. And the Princeton coach Chris Ayres, his daughter Chloe won the title at 105. I heard he was instrumental in getting the Girls State Tournament off the ground

Was Getz an All American?

Before the Internet it was pretty damn hard to find out who the HS Wrestling All Americans even were, or even if they had an All American list ! lol

Getz was a tremendous NJ HS wrestler, winning States in 1982, and wound up winning 77 matches for RU. He came in 3rd at the EiWA tournament in 1987 as well.
A look back at the year Lee Getz won States:
1982
102: Joe Melchiore (Highland)
109: Doug Taylor (Millville)
116: John Barna (Phillipsburg)
123: Neil Hanley (Paramus)
130: Steve DePetro (DePaul)
136: John Parr (Passaic Valley)
142: Guy Russo (West Essex)
149: Kevin McCarthy (Ridge)
159: John Stafford (Highland)
171: John Monaco (Clifton)
189: Tim Curry (Paul VI-Haddonfield)
Hwt: Lee Getz (Voorhees)

In the above State Champ list, notice the absence of wrestlers from Bergen Catholic, Pope John , Delbarton etc. Things have changed.

LMAO, I love these outlandish comparisons. And Michael Jordan was cut from varsity his sophomore year. So what??? Poz hasn't won states yet and hasn't won much on the national tourney scene either. He's a good HS wrestler but that won't translate to being competitive in the toughest conference in the land or an AA. He needs more to get to that next level...hopefully, he does. We're in the B1G and many here complain about our lack of depth and elite talent...well, you need elite recruits...
Didn't Foca beat Poz earlier in the year 16-13?

I guess Poz showed he can score against top opponents then
Who said he couldn't score? Beating these guys is the issue.

This man speaks the truth.. the #1 indicator if a HS wrestler will translate into college is how elite they were in HS. If ur a HS soph beating up elite Hs seniors(aka shayne van ness) then by the time u r a freshman in college u will b beating up those upper class man college wrestlers..

All college wrestling is really is just the good and great wrestlers left from HS... so if ur a good HS wrestler then u most likely will end up a avg d1 college wrestler.. ofc there will be the unsung recruit that goes on to be NCAA champ or the ELITE recruit that nevers AA but those are usually outliers..

Poz as a junior has lost to one wrestler this year, #5 in the country Foca, twice. At the Beast in a pretty loaded weight he lost to Foca in the semis, beat #12 in the country, Craft of Blair and pinned #8 in the country Roberts of Wyoming Seminary for 3rd place. Jackson Turley took second in the same weight class losing to Foca as well. Poz may not pass your eye test but he has had an amazing year and beat several highly ranked guys. He will be a great addition to the team, especially with another year to develop in Hs.

I hope he does. Hopefully, next year he has a season like Aragona and then I'll have a different outlook.

Actually, based on these tweets he might be too hurt to wrestle next weekend. Hope that's not the case!

Those tweets were from last week. He was able to wrestle the regionals this past weekend. He medically forfeited the finals against the same wrestler he forfeited the district final to - DaShawn Farber of Nazareth.

He is currently listed in the PIAA State Championship AAA 138 bracket for this upcoming weekend. I guess we will see if he wrestles.

Another commit still wrestling is junior Dylan Shawver (126) of Ohio. He is ranked #1 in Ohio and beat the #2 wrestler last week in sectionals and this past weekend in districts. The states are coming up this weekend. He is the #10 ranked 126 in the country by Flo.

Don’t agree at all. Poz jumps up 22 lbs from last year and makes the final as a junior. And he was the aggressor the whole match and almost pancaked him in the 1st. And he is top 10 at his weight in the U.S.
I dont know why your being a dick about. I am serious. No shit he scored more points. My point was what did he do, because I didnt see him with much offense. I didnt see much difference. I am saying neither one looked to have a ton of offense. So that is why I am asking your opinion of foca. He didnt seem to have much offense/
keep in mind their Beast of the east finals match was 16-13. I think both guys decided to be a little more cautious

Devon Britton wins his round of 16 match by Fall in 5:25. On to Quarters.

Uncommitted Heavyweight Kawam DeBoe, the #1 seed, wrestles in a little while. Still not sure where he will go to college and if he will wrestle or play football. He's #9 in the Intermat rankings.
