Podcast Rutgers / Akron Recap and Basketball Recruiting Roundup!

A sack isn't the end all be all situation for the defense. The amount of pressure created by the DL this year is up significantly. Pressure is just as great as a sack if not more because it can lead to sudden changes (TOs). Sack look good for stats. Coaches appreciate pressure and hits just as much. They impact the game the same way.

It's actually the opposite, pressure and sack numbers are both down through the first two games of the season. Plus the competition is weaker this year (Akron, Howard) than last year (Northwestern, Temple).

2023
40 total pressures
6 sacks

2024

Pressure may be down, but to say Northwestern and Temple were better is questionable. At the end of the season Northwestern was head and shoulder better, but at the time Rutgers played them NW was hot garbage. Temple would struggle with both Akron and Howard last year and this year. Also, Rutgers didn't open up the playbook against Howard and Akron like they did against NW and Temple. NW and Temple were perceived to be better opponents, but turned out to be less challenging when the games were played. Add the fact Rutgers has key defenders out this year, that makes a difference too. I think if Rutgers turned up the pressure against Howard and Akron like they did against NW and Temple, the numbers would be similar or slightly better. Btw, love the podcast. I listen to everyone because you guys give great insight to Rutgers sports.
