Rutgers Hosting San Diego Transfer PJ Hayes

39.7% on 3 last season on 184 attempts.

Perfect!!

No more of this “questions about available minutes” or whatever reportedly happened with Jones.

Tell him he’s in the starting lineup with (or without) JWill and expected to lead the Big Ten in 3pt shooting with all the open shots he’ll get with defenses collapsing on Ace/Dylan.

Not so fast ! Looks good on paper but my same caution for all shooter targets. Good shooting comes from good motion and good passing.

Have you read the various threads raking Schiano over the coals accusing him of playing Wimsatt too long because of politics and promises made?

It's funny because both Pike and GS are known for their mantra of "the best players play"

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With the risk of mansplaining or coming across as a pen15....there is more to basketball than making 3s.

This guy has 1 thing in common with me (and probably you).......he has never dunked in a D1 basketball game

There maybe other factors but three point shooting makes up for a multitude of sins (Hubie Brown). Just watch any NBA game.

Completely different scenarios.
He appears he would have the best shooting resume of anyone else on the roster.
Which is the exact role we need to fill.

Assuming JWill, Ace and Dylan are already starting - an easy argument can be made to play 39% 3pt shooter significant minutes over Acuff or Derkack to start the season.

Correct. There is. But that is also part of basketball.
That's why there is 4 other guys on the court.

Ignoring shooting is no different than saying "there is more to basketball than blocking shots".
We don't bench a guard because he can't protect the rim.

Take a look at his minutes and numbers down the stretch...plus he has played only 1 year and it was with san Diego.

I am completely in agreement we need shooting AND if Pike likes him i like him. Putting him in the starting 5 in May is silly in my opinion.

We could use PJ Brown, right?

PJ Brown was 14th in NBA voting one year. I think/hope the knucklehead that voted for him had his voting rights taken from him immediately.

All of these players other than JWill are untried at this level. You can't make promises. Even if they were proven at P5 level, players grow and regress...can't make promises. Will just come back to haunt you.

He played 3 years on a good D2 team before that. Kid can definitely shoot the ball. The year before he shot 45% from 3.

You point to his minutes at the end of the season dropping - it looks like he was in a bit of a shooting slump the last 5 games. Before that he had been 43% of the season.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying this kid is the next Cam Spencer, but he’s also not Agee. San Diego won 18 games. They are no worse than Loyola was. This kid dropped 23 points and grabbed 6 boards against Arizona State in a win. It’s harder to take much from the St Mary’s and Gonzaga losses since they were blow outs but he put up decent numbers against better teams.

Wait - you dont want this guy, but you were the president of the Oscar Palmquist fan club last year? What am I missing???

Excellent point. I think Green is focused on the 10 games where San Diego gave up 88+ points and cringing.

Though it’s not like Oskar is a world beater of a defender but he at least learned how not to be out of position.

Ok how about telling him this:

I can't promise you a starting spot or significant minutes.
However......there is a specific (and important) role on the team next year for elite outside shooting. To create space and draw defenders away from Ace/Dylan.
Ideally Ace/Dylan will have the ball and run the offense mostly. We need a 2nd/3rd option to catch ball rotation passes leading to open shots while the defense is scrambling back out to the 3pt line.

You'll be competing against Acuff, Derkack and Davis for the important role........

1. Where do I say I dont like this guy
2. Fan of the Gavin shouldnt be playing club…..i realize 100% what Oskar was as a player. He is a 11th man on a D1 roster

Oskar wasnt immune from losing his man AND he got taken off the dribble at will. He was lightyears ahead of Gavin on D and he wasnt petrified of contact. The 2nd being critical.

Gavin was a frosh playing his first year of college ball. Most of the players on the court were older and stronger than him. It matters.

Hayes will be a super senior. Experienced like Oskar. A better career 3 point shooter. Competition level tends to be less revelant for sharp shooters. If you can make open shots at a lower level you can probably do it a tier up.
